He was born 9 September 1887 in Seabright, NJ and died 2 February 1958 in Idyllwild, CA. He studied at Yale University with Horatio Parker and Harry Jepson, then continued his studies in Paris. He worked as an organizt at Church of the Incarnation in New York, Rutgers Presbyterian Chruch in New York, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Philadelphia and the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica. 1816 - 1876 Hymnal Number: 599 Arranger of "RUTHERFORD" in Trinity Hymnal Edward Francis Rimbault PhD LLD United Kingdom 1816-1876. Born in Soho, London, England, son of an organist and composer of French descent, he was taught music by his father., Samuel Wesley, and Wiliam Crotch. At age 16 he became organist of the Swiss Church in Soho. He later became organist at various churches, including St Peter’s, Vere Street, and St John’s Wood Presbyterian Church. He edited many collections of music, journals, and publications of music, and arranged music compositions. In addition to editing or arranging contemporary operas, he had a strong interest in editing or arranging earlier English music. He studied the musical treatises in the library of Archbishop Tenison, one of the oldest public libraries in London. In 1838, At age 22 he began lecturing about the history of English music, and was in much demand due to the interest aroused. He did editorial work for the Percy Society, the Camden Society, the Motet Society, and the Handel Society. For the latter he edited the “Messiah”, “Saul”, and “Samson” He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and was granted membership in the Academy of Music in Stockholm, Sweden. Gottingen University also conferred upon him a PhD. His reputation was such that he was offered a teaching position at Harvard University in the U.S., which he turned down. In 1848 he was given an honorary degree by the University of Oxford. In 1849 he published a collection of English nursery rhymes and the tunes to which they were sung. Rimbault authored 76 books, a few named here include : “Bibliotheca madrigaliana” (1847); “The pianoforte” (1860); “Early English organ builders and their works” (1865). In 1855 he co-authored “The organ- its history and construction” with John Hopkins. He did a small amount of composing as well. He wrote an operetta in 1838, and a musical drama. He also composed a large number of pianoforte scores for operas by others. He was an admirable harmonium player. Traveling to various auctions for years, he accumulated a rare collection of books. After his death his extensive collection was auctioned off in 1877, with many items going to the British Library. About 300 items were sold to an individual, and upon his death in 1888, the ‘Drexel collection’ was bequeathed to the Lenox Library (precursor of the New York Public Library). Today, the collection is part of the Music Division of the NY Public Library for the Performing Arts. He was an author, editor, arranger, composer, lithographer, translator, scribe, adapter, and bookseller. He died at London, England. No information found regarding a family. John Perry

Albert Midlane

1825 - 1909 Hymnal Number: 297 Author of "Revive thy work, O Lord" in Trinity Hymnal Midlane, Albert, was born at Newport, Isle of Wight, Jan. 23, 1825, and was engaged in business in that town for many years. To his Sunday school teacher he ascribes the honour of prompting him to poetic efforts: and the same teacher did much to shape his early life. His first printed hymn, "Hark! in the presence of our God," was written in September, 1842, at Carisbrooke Castle, and printed in the Youth’s Magazine in November of the same year. Since then he has written over 300, and of these a large proportion are in common use. They appeared in magazines and small mission hymn-books, including:— (1) The Youth's Magazine; (2) The British Messenger; (3) The London Messenger; (4) Trotter's Evangelical Hymn Book, 1860; (5) The Ambassador's Hymn Book, 1861; (6) Second edition of the same, 1868; (7)Hymn Book for Youth; (8) Good News for the Little Ones, 1860; (9) William Carter's Gospel Hymn Book, 1862; and several other works of a similar kind. In addition to several small works in prose, Mr. Midlane has gathered his verse together from time to time and published it as:— (1) Poetry addressed to Sabbath School Teachers, 1844; (2) Vecta Garland, 1850; (3) Leaves from Olivet, 1864; (4) Gospel Echoes, 1865; (5) Above the Bright Blue Sky, 1867; (6) Early Lispings, 1880. Of the hymns contained in these works nearly 200 have been in common use from 1861 to 1887, the most popular being "There's a Friend for little children." The hymn-books, however, in which many of them are found are usually very small, are used in what are commonly known as Gospel Missions, and have gradually given way to other and more important collections. We therefore append only those hymns which are at the present time in use in official or quasi-official hymn-books, or such collections as have a wide circulation. Those hymns which are omitted from the following list may be found in the works given above, and especially in the Gospel Echoes. The collections in which these hymns are mainly found are Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book, 1866; Snepp's Songs of Grace & Glory, 1872-3; Hurditch's Enlarged London Hymn Book, 1873, and smaller books for Evangelical mission work. Of Mr. Midlane's hymns as a whole, Miher's estimate that "His hymns are full of spiritual thought, careful in their wording, and often very pleasing without reaching the highest form of poetical excellence " (Singers and Songs, p. 572), is just. Mr. Midlane published in 1901 The Bright Blue Sky Hymn Book, of 315 of his hymns, and the same year The Gospel Hall Hymn Book, for use in the Gospel Hall, Newport, I.W., with 218 additional, making 533 original compositions. A broad-sheet of seven special hymns for Jewish children, in connection with the Mildmay Mission to the Jews, was also issued in December, 1904. Lawrence Tuttiett

1825 - 1897 Hymnal Number: 243 Author of "O quickly come, dread Judge of all" in Trinity Hymnal Laurence Tuttiett was born at Colyton, Devon, in 1825; was educated at Christ Hospital, and at King's College, London; ordained Deacon, 1848, Priest, 1849; entered upon the living of Lea Marston, Coleshill, 1854, and subsequently was appointed Curate of S. Paul's, Knightsbridge, London. He is the author of several volumes and tracts. --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A. 1872. ================== Tuttiett, Lawrence, son of John Tuttiett, surgeon in the R.N., was born at Cloyton, Devonshire, in 1825, and educated at Christ's Hospital, and King's College, London. It was originally purposed that he should follow the medical profession, but, abandoning it for the ministry, he took Holy Orders in 1848. In 1854 he became vicar of Lea Marston, Warwickshire; and in 1870 incumbent of the Episcopal Church of St. Andrews, Scotland. He was also preferred to a prebendaryship in St. Ninian's Cathedral, Perth, in 1880. He is the author of several manuals of prayers, published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge and other prose works, and also of:— (1) Hymns for Churchmen, 1854; (2) Counsels of a Godfather, 1861; (3) Hymns for the Children of the Church, 1862; (4) Germs of Thought on the Sunday Services, 1864; (5) Through the Clouds; Thoughts in Plain Verse, 1866. From those works and other sources the following hymns have come into common use:— 1. As calmly in the glowing west. Evening. 2. Come, our Father's voice is calling. Confirmation. Appeared in his Hymns for the Children of the Church, 1862, in 6 stanzas of 4 lines. It passed into Mrs. C. Brock's Children's Hymn Book, 1881. 3. Grant us Thy light that we may know. In Horder's Congregational Hymn Book, 1884; the Universal Hymn Book, 1885, it begins, “O grant us light that we may know." 4. I come, 0 Father kind. Holy Communion. 5. Lo, like a bride, in pure array. Septuagesima. 6. No sign we ask from heaven above. After Holy Baptism. Published in his Hymns for Churchmen, 1854, in 4 stanzas of 6 lines. It has passed into several collections, includ¬ing the S. P. C. K. Church Hymns, 1871, Thring's Collection, 1882, &c. 7. Now, eternal Father, bless. Holy Baptism. In his Hymns for the Children of the Church, 1862, in 3 stanzas of 6 lines, and Mrs. Brock's Children's Hymn Book, 1881. In the latter it is attributed to Bishop Maclagan in error. 8. 0 happy Christian children. Divine Protection. From his Hymns for the Children of the Church, 1862, into Mrs. Brock's Children's Hymn Book, 1881, &c. 9. 0 Jesu, ever present. The Good Shepherd. Published in his Germs of Thought, 1864; the S. P.C. K. Church Hymns, 1871, and many others. 10. Shepherd, good and gracious. The Good Shepherd. In his Hymns for the Children of the Church, 1862; Mrs. Brock's Children's Hymn Book, 1881, &c. 11. Sometimes o'er our pathway. In time of Trouble. From his Hymns for the Children of the Church, 1862, in 3 st. of 8 1., into Mrs. Brock's Children's Hymn Book, 1881. 12. When the world is brightest. Litany to the Saviour. Published in his Through the Clouds, &c, 1866, in 10 stanzas of 8 lines, with the note :—"Those words were written for the music of a Roman Litany 'Ave Stella Maria.'" This Litany is in extensive use. 13. Who is this? the long expected. Advent. In addition to these, several of Mr. Tuttiett's hymns are annotated under their respective first lines, the most popular of which are, "Father, let me dedicate"; "Go forward, Christian soldier"; and "0 quickly come, dread Judge of all." Mr. Tuttiett's hymns are characterised by smoothness of rhythm, directness of aim, simplicity of language, and deep earnestness. Those for special services and seasons are of great merit. Robert Archibald Smith

1780 - 1829 Person Name: Robert A. Smith Hymnal Number: 195 Harmonizer of "MARTYRDOM" in Trinity Hymnal Although largely self-taught, Robert A. Smith (b. Reading, Berkshire, England, 1780; d. Edinburgh, Scotland, 1829) was an excellent musician. By the age of ten he played the violin, cello, and flute, and was a church chorister. From 1802 to 1817 he taught music in Paisley and was precentor at the Abbey; from 1823 until his death he was precentor and choirmaster in St. George's Church, Edinburgh. He enlarged the repertoire of tunes for psalm singing in Scotland, raised the precentor skills to a fine art, and greatly improved the singing of the church choirs he directed. Smith published his church music in Sacred Harmony (1820, 1825) and compiled a six-volume collection of Scottish songs, The Scottish Minstrel (1820-1824). Bert Polman

Jemima Luke

1813 - 1906 Person Name: Jemima T. Luke Hymnal Number: 650 Author of "I think when I read that sweet story of old" in Trinity Hymnal Luke, Jemima Thompson, the wife of Rev. Samuel Luke, an Independent minister of England, was the daughter of Thomas 422 Thompson, a philanthropist, and was born at Colebrook Terrace, Islington, August 19, 1813. When only thirteen years of age she began writing for the Juvenile Magazine. She published a volume titled The Female Jesuit in 1851 and A Memoir of Eliza Ann Harris, of Clifton, in 1859, but her name is known to the Christian world almost wholly through the one hymn found in this volume. Mrs. Luke died February 2, 1906. I think when I read that sweet 682 Hymn Writers of the Church, 1915, Charles Nutter =============== Luke, Jemima, née Thompson, daughter of Thomas Thompson, sometime of Bath, was born at Colebrooke Terrace, Islington, Aug. 19, 1813, and was married to the late Samuel Luke, a Congregational Minister, in 1843. She was an anonymous contributor to The Juvenile Magazine at the age of 13, and subsequently pub. several works, including The Female Jesuit, 1851; A Memoir of Eliza Ann Harris, of Clifton, 1859, &c. Mrs. Luke is known to hymnody through her hymn:— I think when I read that sweet story of old. [The Love of Jesus.] It is recorded that this hymn was composed in a stage coach in 1841, and was designed for use in the village school, near her father's seat, Poundsford Park. It was published anonymously in the Leeds Hymn Book, 1853, No. 874, in 3 stanzas of 8 lines, and has since come into use through children's hymn-books in most English-speaking countries. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

He managed music stores in New York City and Philadelphia, PA., the latter with composer partner, William Fischer. He married Josephine Louisa Barrows, and they had seven children: Blanche, Marie, Ida, John, Josephine, Josephine, and Augusta. He compiled eight religious songbooks from 1846 thru 1869. He died while traveling in Algiers, Africa, and was buried in Philadelphia, PA. John Perry

James Langran

1835 - 1909 Hymnal Number: 467 Composer of "LANGRAN" in Trinity Hymnal James Langran (b. St. Pancras, London, England, November 10, 1835; d. Tottenham, London, England, June 8, 1909) studied organ as a youth but did not receive his Bachelor of Music degree from Oxford until he was forty-nine years old. He had several organist positions–the longest was at St. Paul's Church, Tottenham, England, from 1870 to 1909. He also taught music at St. Katherine's Training College for Schoolmistresses (1878-1909). He was deprived of his office at the Restoration for refusing the Oath of Supremacy, and died in 1663. His Life was published by Robert Wodrow in 1726. 1670 - 1750 Person Name: John Christian Jacobi Hymnal Number: 246 Translator of "Holy Ghost, dispel our sadness" in Trinity Hymnal Jacobi, John Christian, a native of Germany, was born in 1670, and appointed Keeper of the Royal German Chapel, St. James's Palace, London, about 1708. He held that post for 42 years, and died Dec. 14, 1750. He was buried in the Church of St. Paul's, Covent Garden. His publications included :— (1) A Collection of Divine Hymns, Translated from the High Dutch. Together with their Proper Tunes and Thorough Bass. London: Printed and Sold by J. Young, in St. Paul’s Churchyard; . . . 1720. This edition contains 15 hymns. Two years later this collection, with a few changes in the text and much enlarged, was republished as (2) Psalmodia Germanica; or a Specimen of Divine Hymns. Translated from the High Dutch. Together with their Proper Tunes and Thorough Bass. London: J. Young . 1722. This edition contained 62 hymns, of which 3 ("He reigns, the Lord our Saviour reigns"; "Is God withdrawing"? Henry Ware

1794 - 1843 Person Name: Henry Ware, Jr. 1794-1843 Hymnal Number: 627 Author of "Happy the home when God is there" in Trinity Hymnal Henry Ware was born in Hingham, Massachusetts, in 1793. His father was a Unitarian minister; afterwards a Professor in Harvard College. Young Ware graduated at Harvard, studied theology, and became minister of the Second Unitarian Society, in Boston, in 1817. After a ministry of twelve years, he made a foreign tour, and on his return was elected "Parkman Professor of Pulpit Eloquence and Pastoral Theology" in Harvard College. In this position he obtained eminence. He died in September, 1843. His collected works in four volumes, were edited after his death, by the Rev. Chandler Robbins. --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A., 1872 =================== Ware, Henry, D.D., son of Dr. H. Ware, pastor of the Unitarian congregation at Hingham, Massachusetts, and afterward Hollis Professor of Divinity at Cambridge, U.S.A., was born at Hingham, April 21, 1794. Before going to Harvard College, in 1808, he was under the care of Dr. Allyn, at Duxbury, and then of Judge Ware, at Cambridge. He graduated at Harvard in high honours, in 1812; and was then for two years an assistant teacher in Exeter Academy. He was licensed to preach by the Boston Unitarian Association, July 31, 1815; and ordained pastor of the Second Church of that city, Jan. 1, 1817. In 1829, in consequence of his ill health, he received the assistance of a co-pastor in the person of Ralph Waldo Emerson. In the same year Ware was appointed Professor of Pulpit Eloquence and Pastoral Care in the Cambridge Theological School. He entered upon his duties in 1830, and resigned in 1842. He removed to Framingham, and died there, Sept. 25, 1843. His D.D. degree was conferred upon Memoir, published by his brother John Ware, M.D., were numerous and on a variety of topics. He edited the Christian Disciple, which was established in 1813, and altered in title to the Christian Examiner in 1824, for some years before the change of title, and gave it his assistance subsequently. The Rev. Chandler Robbins collected his works and published them in four volumes, in 1847. His hymns, many of which are of more than usual excellence, are given in vol. i. Henry F. Chorley

In 1834 he was engaged as a member of the staff of the London Athenaeum. This connection he retained for 35 years. He died Feb. 15, 1872. Chorley be­gan writ­ing for the Lon­don Athen­æ­um in 1830, and was the pa­per’s mu­sic critic and lit­er­a­ry re­view­er un­til 1868. He al­so be­came mus­ic crit­ic for the Lon­don Times and wrote, for these and other jour­nals, re­views and mu­sic­al gos­sip col­umns, dis­cuss­ing com­pose­rs and per­form­ers in Bri­tain and on the Eur­o­pean con­ti­nent. He was quite con­ser­va­tive, and was a per­sist­ent op­po­nent of in­no­va­tion, but was a live­ly chron­ic­ler of Lon­don life. In the Athen­æ­um and else­where, Chor­ley oft­en cri­ti­cized the mu­sic of Schu­mann and Wag­ner for what he called "de­ca­dence." In 1850 and 1851, Chor­ley ed­it­ed the La­dies’ Com­pan­ion, which co­vered fa­shion and do­mes­tic wo­men’s is­sues. Chorley was al­so a jour­nal­ist, no­vel­ist, play­wright, and po­et, and op­era li­bret­tist. One of his best known piec­es was his obit­u­ary of Tur­ge­nev, mis­tak­en­ly writ­ten while the Russ­ian was still ve­ry much alive. Tur­ge­nev was not of­fend­ed by the er­ror near­ly as much as he was by the cri­tic­al opin­ions of his work Chorley gave in the obit­u­a­ry. Chorley was con­sid­ered ec­cen­tric and abras­ive, but was re­spect­ed for his in­te­gri­ty and kind­ness. He en­thus­i­as­tic­al­ly gave and at­tend­ed din­ner par­ties, and cul­ti­vat­ed friend­ships with Eliz­a­beth Bar­rett, Fe­lix Men­dels­sohn, Charles Dick­ens, Ar­thur Sul­li­van and Charles Sant­ley. Af­ter the death of his bro­ther, John Rut­ter Chor­ley (1806–1867), Hen­ry in­her­it­ed enough mo­ney to re­tire from the Athen­æ­um, though he con­tin­ued to con­trib­ute ar­ti­cles for that pa­per and for The Or­ches­tra. In spite of Chorley’s ef­forts to pro­mote the mu­sic of Charles Gou­nod in Eng­land, the com­poser dis­liked Chor­ley in­tense­ly. When Gou­nod lived in Eng­land in the ear­ly 1870’s, he wrote a satir­i­cal pi­a­no piece in­tende­d to be a par­o­dy of Chor­ley’s per­son­al­i­ty. It great­ly amused Gou­nod’s Eng­lish pa­tron, Geor­gi­na Weld­on, who de­scribed Chor­ley as hav­ing a "thin, sour, high-pitched so­pran­ish voice" and mov­ing like a "stuffed red-haired mon­key." Gou­nod in­tend­ed to pub­lish the piece with a ded­i­ca­tion to Chor­ley, but died be­fore this was pos­si­ble. Wel­don then in­vent­ed a new pro­gram for the piece, which was re-titled Fun­er­al March of a Mar­i­onette. It be­came pop­u­lar as a con­cert piece, and in the 1950s, its open­ing phras­es be­came well known as the theme mu­sic for the tel­e­vi­sion pro­gram Al­fred Hitch­cock Pre­sents. Heinrich Albert

1604 - 1651 Hymnal Number: 142 Composer of "GODESBERG" in Trinity Hymnal Alberti, or Albert, Heinrich, son of Johann Albert, tax collector at Lobenstein, in Voigtland (Reuss), born at Lobenstein, June 28, 1604. After some time spent in the study of law at Leipzig, lie went to Dresden and studied music under his uncle Heinrich Schutz, the Court Capellmeister. He went to Konigsberg in 1626, and was, in 1631, appointed organist of the Cathedral. In 1636 he was enrolled a member of the Poetical Union of Konigsberg, along with Dach, Roberthin, and nine others. He died at Konigsberg, Oct. 6, 1651. His hymns, which exhibit him as of a pious, loving, true, and artistic nature, appeared, with those of the other members of the Union, in his Arien etliche theils geistliche, theils iceltliche zur Andacht, guten Sitten, Keuscher Liebe und Ehrenlust dienende Lieder, pub. separately in 8 pts., 1638-1650, and in a collected form, Konigsberg, 1652, including in all, 118 secular, and 74 sacred pieces. Of the 78 sacred melodies which he composed and published in these 8 pts., 7 came into German common use (Koch, iii. 191-197; Allg. Deutsche Biog., i. 210-212, the latter dating his death, 1655 or 1656). Two of his hymns have been translated into English, viz.: i. Der rauhe Herbst kommt wieder. [Autumn.] 1st pub. as above in pt. viii., 1650, No. 9, in 9 stanzas of 6 lines, entitled "On the happy departure, Sep. 2, 1048, of Anna Katherine, beloved little daughter of Herr Andreas Hollander," of Kneiphof. Of this hymn Dr. Cosack, of Konigsberg (quoted in Koch,viii. 186), says:— "For two hundred years it is hardly likely that a single day has greeted the earth that has not, here and there, in German lands, been met with Alberti's hymn. Hardly another morning hymn can be compared with it, as far as popularity and intrinsic value are concerned, if simplicity and devotion, purity of doctrine and adaptation to all the circumstances of life are to decide." Sts. ii., iii., v. have been special favorites in Germany, st. v. being adopted by children, by brides, by old and young, as a morning prayer. Henry K. Oliver

1800 - 1885 Hymnal Number: 171 Composer of "FEDERAL STREET" in Trinity Hymnal Henry Kemble Oliver (b. Beverly, MA, 1800; d. Salem, MA, 1885) was educated at Harvard and Dartmouth. He taught in the public schools of Salem (1818-1842) and was superintendent of the Atlantic Cotton Mills in Lawrence, Massachusetts (1848-1858). His civic service included being mayor of Lawrence (1859­1861) and Salem (1877-1880), state treasurer (1861-1865), and organizer of the Massachusetts Bureau of Statistics and Labor (1867-1873). Oliver was organist at several churches, including Park Street Congregational Church in Boston, North Church in Salem, and the Unitarian Church in Lawrence. A founder of the Mozart Association and several choral societies in Salem, he published his hymn tunes in Hymn and Psalm Tunes (1860) and Original Hymn Tunes (1875). Bert Polman

Johann Rudolf Ahle

1625 - 1673 Person Name: Johann R. Ahle Hymnal Number: 112 Composer of "NUREMBERG" in Trinity Hymnal Johann Rudolph Ahle, b. Mühlhausen, 1625; Ahle studied theology at Erfurt University. Little is known about his musical education, but be became well known as an organist while he was in Erfurt. He returned to Mühlhausen and became an organist at St. Blasius Church, he composed organ music but is know for his sacred choral music. He was the father of Johann Georg, who was also a composer and succeeded his father as organist at St. Blasius Church. James Oren Thompson

He was a minister before joining the army and fighting in the Civil War. After the war he joined the Methodist Episcopal Maine Conference in 1866. He transferred to the Providence, RI conference and retired in 1886. He moved to Keyser, WV and edited The Mountain Echo. He then moved to Charleston, WV and served as secretary of the Agriculture. The Venerable Bede

673 - 735 Person Name: The Venerable Bede, 673-735 Hymnal Number: 212 Author of "A hymn of glory let us sing" in Trinity Hymnal Bede (b. circa 672-673; d. May 26, 735), also known as Saint Bede or the Venerable Bede, was an English monk at Northumbrian monastery at Monkwearmouth (now Jarrow). Sent to the monastery at the young age of seven, he became deacon very early on, and then a priest at the age of thirty. An author and scholar, he is particularly known for his Ecclesiastical History of the English People, which gained him the title “Father of English History.” He also wrote many scientific and theological works, as well as poetry and music. Bede is the only native of Great Britain to have ever been made a Doctor of the Church. He died on Ascension Day, May 26, 735, and was buried in Durham Cathedral. This eminent and early scholar, grammarian, philosopher, poet, biographer, historian, and divine, was born in 673, near the place where, shortly afterwards, Benedict Biscop founded the sister monasteries of Wearmouth and Jarrow, on an estate conferred upon him by Ecgfrith, or Ecgfrid, king of Northumbria, possibly, as the Rev. S. Baring-Gould, Lives of the Saints (May), p. 399, suggests, "in the parish of Monkton, which appears to have been one of the earliest endowments of the monastery." His education was carried on at one or other of the monasteries under the care of Benedict Biscop until his death, and then of Ceolfrith, Benedict's successor, to such effect that at the early age of nineteen he was deemed worthy, for his learning and piety's sake, to be ordained deacon by St. John of Beverley, who was then bishop of Hexham, in 691 or 692. From the same prelate he received priest's orders ten years afterwards, in or about 702. The whole of his after-life he spent in study, dividing his time between the two monasteries, which were the only home he was ever to know, and in one of which (that of Jarrow) he died on May 26th, 735, and where his remains reposed until the 11th century, when they were removed to Durham, and re-interred in the same coffin as those of St. Cuthbett, where they were discovered in 1104. He was a voluminous author upon almost every subject, and as an historian his contribution to English history in the shape of his Historia Ecclesiastica is invaluable. But it is with him as a hymnist that we have to do here. I. In the list of his works, which Bede gives at the end of his Ecclesiastical History, he enumerates a Liber Hymnorum, containing hymns in “several sorts of metre or rhyme." The extant editions of this work are:— (1) Edited by Cassander, and published at Cologne, 1556; (2) in Wernsdorf's Poetae Latin Min., vol. ii. pp.239-244. II. Bede's contributions to the stores of hymnology were not large, consisting principally of 11 or at most 12 hymns; his authorship of some of these even is questioned by many good authorities. While we cannot look for the refined and mellifluous beauty of later Latin hymnists in the works of one who, like the Venerable Bede, lived in the infancy of ecclesiastical poetry; and while we must acknowledge the loss that such poetry sustains by the absence of rhyme from so many of the hymns, and the presence in some of what Dr. Neale calls such "frigid conceits" as the epanalepsis (as grammarians term it) where the first line of each stanza, as in "Hymnum canentes Martyrum," is repeated as the last; still the hymns with which we are dealing are not without their peculiar attractions. They are full of Scripture, and Bede was very fond of introducing the actual words of Scripture as part of his own composition, and often with great effect. That Bede was not free from the superstition of his time is certain, not only from his prose writings, but from such poems as his elegiac "Hymn on Virginity," written in praise and honour of Queen Etheldrida, the wife of King Ecgfrith, and inserted in his Ecclesiastical History, bk. iv., cap. xx. Joachim Magdeburg

1525 - 1587 Hymnal Number: 558 Author (st. 1) of "Who trusts in God, a strong abode" in Trinity Hymnal Magdeburg, Joachim , was born circa 1525 at Gardelegen in the Altmark. He matriculated at the University of Wittenberg, April, 1544, and in 1546 was appointed rector of the school at Schöningen, near Helmstädt, Brunswick. He became pastor of Dannenberg in Lüneburg in 1547, but being unable to exist on his slender income resigned in 1549, and in the same year became pastor of Salzwedel in the Altmark. But refusing to adopt the Roman ceremonies prescribed by the Act of Interim he was, in 1552 (Easter Sunday, April 17) banished from the Electorate of Brandenburg. About May, 1552, by the influence of Johann Aepinus, Superintendent of Hamburg, he was appointed diaconus of St. Peter's Church in Hamburg, and there became acquainted with Flacius Illyricus [Matthias Flach, Extreme Lutheran, church historian, &c, died at Frankfurt-am-Main, March 11, 1575]. After the death of Aepinus, May 13, 1553, Paulus von Eitzen, his successor, was not so friendly, and when, during the controversy in 1558 regarding Holy Communion, Magdeburg published a tractate without submitting it to the revision of Eitzen, the latter obtained the removal of Magdeburg from his post, May 25, 1558. He then went to Magdeburg to help his friend Flacius as one of the compilers of the Church history known as the Magdeburg Centuries. Shortly thereafter he was appointed pastor of Ossmanstedt in Thuringia; but, as a follower of Flacius, was dispossessed in 1562. He then stayed for longer or shorter periods with Count von Mansfeld, Baron von Schönburg and others, until, after the Emperor Maximilian II. had once more permitted Protestant preachers in Austria, he was, at Count von Mansfeld's recommendation, appointed by the commandant of Raab in Hungary as regimental chaplain at Raab in 1564, and, after his house there was burnt, at the castle of Gräfenworth (east of Krems), to the German-speaking Austrian troops. There he had to contend with the machinations of the Roman clergy, and after joining with nineteen others of the Evangelical clergy in Austria in presenting a Confession of Faith to an Austrian Diet (Landtag), was compelled to leave; and in 1571 we find him living at Erfurt. In 1581 he was preacher at Efferding in Austria; but in 1583 was expelled as an adherent of Flacius. His later history is unknown (Koch, i. 446; Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie, xx., 53, &c). Wachernagel, iii. pp. 1035-1042, gives five pieces under his name. The only one translation into English is:— Wer Gott vertraut, hat wohl gebaut. Trust in God. Founded on Ps. lxxiii. 25, 26. Wachernagel, iii. p. 1042, prints st. i. from Magdeburg's Christliche und tröstliche Tischgesenge, mit vier Stimmen, Erfurt, 1572 (where it is the hymn for Saturday evening); and thinks it probable, though not certain, that it is an original by Magdeburg. In S. Calvisius's Harmonia cantionum ecclesiasticarum, Leipzig, 1597, st. ii. and iii., are first found. Lauxmann in Koch, viii., 373, thus sums up the evidence:— ”From these circumstances it seems evident that the hymn originally consisted only of the first stanza, but that Magdeburg's authorship, in opposition to other claims [it has been ascribed to J. Kolross and to J. Mühlmann] is beyond doubt." The text of 1597 is repeated in Wachernagel, iii. p. 1043, and the Unverfälschter Liedersegen, 1851, No. 642, in 3 st. of 8 (or 12) lines. She was interested in the mission field from an early age, and two of her early publications were entitled The Missionary Ship (1853) and The Missionary Farewell (1854) relating to the Patagonia Mission (later the South American Missionary Society). She married William Pennefather at the Mildmay Protestant Mission in London, and edited the mission’s monthly Woman’s Work in the Great Harvest Field. At age 17, she was editing a magazine for the Patagonia Mission, later the South American Missionary Society. She died in Croydon, Surrey on 28 March 1919. NN, Hymnary

William Hayman Cummings

1831 - 1915 Person Name: William H. Cummings Hymnal Number: 168 Arranger of "MENDELSSOHN" in Trinity Hymnal William H. Cummings (b. Sidbury, Devonshire, England, 1831; d. Dulwich, London, England, 1915) had a lifelong love of Felix Mendelssohn, sparked when he sang at age sixteen in the first London performance of Elijah, which was directed by Mendelssohn himself. As a young boy, Cummings had been a chorister at St. Paul's Cathedral and later sang in the choirs of the Temple Church, Westminster Abbey, and the Chapel Royal. Cummings became a famous tenor–he sang in oratorios and was especially known for his evangelist role in the Bach passions. He taught voice at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Normal College and School for the Blind in London and was also an accomplished organist. Cummings wrote books and articles on music history, wrote a biography of Henry Purcell and edited his music, and composed many choral pieces. Bert Polman

Lewis H. Redner

1831 - 1908 Hymnal Number: 152 Composer of "ST. LOUIS" in Trinity Hymnal Lewis Henry Redner (1831-1908) was born in Philadelphia, where he became a real estate agent and served on weekends as an organist and Sunday School Superintendent. He spent nineteen years at Holy Trinity church where Phillip Brooks was rector, and is credited with increasing attendance at the Sunday School from thirty-one to more than a thousand. In 1868 Brooks asked him to write a tune for his new text for children inspired by his recent trip to Bethlehem. Redner composed the tune the night before it was to be sung in worship on Sunday morning. The text and tune were first published in 1894 in The Church Porch, where the tune was named ST. LOUIS, possibly after the composer’s name. Redner is remembered today because of this one tune that has remained a Christmas favorite. Emily Brink

Schenk Hymnal Number: 602 Author of "Who are these like stars appearing" in Trinity Hymnal Schenk, Heinrich Theobald, son of Simon Schenk, pastor at Heidelbach, on the Schwalm, near Alsfeld, Hesse, was born at Heidelbach, April 10, 1656. He entered the Padagogium at Giessen, in 1670, and then pursued his studies at the University (M.A. 1676). In 1676 he returned to the Padagogium, as one of the masters; and was, from 1677 to 1689, "præceptor classicus." On Dec. 27, 1689, he was ordained as Town preacher and "definitor," at the Stadtkirche in Giessen. He died at Giessen, April 11, and was buried there April 15, 1727…The registers at Giessen give the date of his funeral, but not of his death; but say, that at his death he was aged 71 years less 10 days, which would rather suggest April 21 as the date of his birth.) Only one hymn is known by him, but it is a hymn which is found in almost all recent German hymn-books; and, through translations, in many recent English collections. It is:— Wer sind die vor Gottes Throne. Eternal Life. This is found in the Neuvennehrtes Gesangbilchlein, Frankfurt-am-Main, 1719, No. 362, p. 341… It is a beautiful hymn on the Church Triumphant (i.-xiii.), and on the aspirations of the Church Militant to attain the same victorious glory. Jonathan Evans

1748 - 1809 Hymnal Number: 187 Author of "Hark! the voice of love and mercy" in Trinity Hymnal Evans, Jonathan, born at Coventry in 1748 or 1749. He was the son of a working man, and as a youth was employed in a ribbon manufactory. About 1778 he joined the congregation at Coventry, over which the Rev. G. Burder was pastor. He began preaching at Foleshill, near Coventry, in 1782, and in 1795 he began his stated ministry there, retaining the same to his death on Aug. 31, 1809. Two biographical notices of him appeared in the Evangelical Magazine (Oct. 1809, and March 1847), and also several of his hymns. Two of his hymns appeared in Burder's Collection, 1784, and another in the 2nd edition the same year. His best known hymns are, "Come, Thou soul-transforming Spirit,” and "Hark! the voice of love and mercy;" q.v. St. Anatolius. of Constantinople

? - 458 Person Name: Anatolius, 7th century Hymnal Number: 342 Author (attributed to) of "The day is past and over" in Trinity Hymnal Anatolius, one of the Greek hymn-writers. No details are known of him. From the fact that he celebrates martyrs who died in the 6th and early part of the 7th century, it is certain that he is not to be identified (as by Neale) with the patriarch who succeeded Flavian in 449, and afterward procured the enactment of the famous canon of the Council of Chalcedon, which raised Constantinople to the second place among the patriarchal sees (Dict. of Ch. Biog., i. p. 110). A letter is said to exist showing that he was a pupil of Theodore of the Studium (759-826). More than a hundred hymns, all of them short ones, are found in the Mensea and Octoechus. From this account, derived from Anth. Graec. Garm. Christ, p. xli, it will be seen that his poems cannot be considered "the spring-promise" of the age of the Canons (Neale). A few of his hymns have been translated by Dr. Neale in his Hymns of the Early Church, and Dr. Littledale, in the Offices of the Hymns of the Early Church: ("Fierce was the wild billow") and ("The day is past and over"). From the latter he was expelled, Dec. 25, 1739, because of his attachment to Whitefield. For a short time he associated with the Wesleys, but eventually joined G. Whitefield, and subsequently preached at Bristol, London, and Deptford. He died in London (date unknown), and was buried in the Moravian Cemetery at Chelsea. He was a contributor to Whitefield's Christian History (1741-1748), 1742, &c, and published, 1742, An Account of Joseph Humphreys's Experiences, &c. As a hymnwriter he is not widely known. His hymns were contributed to J. Cennick'e Sacred Hymns for the Use of Religious Societies (Bristol), 1743, pt. ii., and are thus introduced: "These were done by Mr. Joseph Humphreys." Of these hymns, two only are in common use:— 1. Blessed are the sons of God. Adoption. 2. Come, guilty souls, and flee away. Invitation. These are given in Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book, 1866, and other collections. No. 1 is the more popular of the two. Died: London, England. Buried: Moravian Cemetery, Chelsea, England. Joseph was the son of Asher Humphreys, Rector of Barton, Hertfordshire, and subsequently Burford, Oxfordshire. At age 10, Joseph was sent to a grammar school at Fairfield, Gloucestershire. His father died in 1732, and Joseph was sent, at age 12, to a theological school in London. In 1738, having been converted to the doctrines of the Wesleys, he began to preach at the Foundry, London, in Bristol, and elsewhere. He attached himself particularly to John Cennick, and accompanied him frequently on his evangelistic tours. Hatfield reports, "For his irregularities in these respects, he was expelled, December 25, 1739, from the school." Following Cennick’s example, Humphreys separated from the Wesleys in April 1741 and became associated with Whitefield. The same year, he preached for the Moravians at Deptford, West Greenwich. He was also one of the four principal contributors to The Weekly History, just then established, in the interest of the new religious movement. Several of his "Letters to John Wesley," opposing his views, appeared in this journal. Humphreys frequently preached at the Bowling Green, Bristol, and the Tabernacle, London. In January 1743, he united with several clergymen and lay preachers in organizing, near Cardiff, Wales, the first Calvinistic Methodist Society. In 1790, according to John Wesley’s journal, Humphreys left Whitefield and was ordained a Presbyterian minister. He later received an Episcopal ordination. (Earltown, Nova Scotia, December 25, 1832--December 12, 1910, Halifax, N.S.). Presbyterian. Study at Halifax's Free Church College yielded him a licence to preach, but instead of seeking ordination he edited (1855-1910) his denomination's principal periodical in the Maritimes, Presbyterian Witness. In its pages, and from pulpits, he strongly supported controversial causes like temperance, Sunday observance, and the Confederation of 1867 (which in Halifax was greeting with a day of public mourning). These interests are reflected in his four hymns included in Canadian Presbyterians' first Hymnal (1880)--though, as the sole native-born contributor, he attached to them only the initial "M." to avoid giving the impression of claiming equality with poets of the homeland. --Hugh D.
