Psalm 37 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 37 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 37:1-15 First Line: Why should I vex my soul, and fret Lyrics: Why should I vex my soul, and fret To see the wicked rise? Or envy sinners waxing great By violence and lies? As flowery grass, cut down at noon, Before the ev'ning fades, So shall their glories vanish soon In everlasting shades. Then let me make the Lord my trust, And practise all that's good; So shall I dwell among the just, And he'll provide me food. I to my God my ways commit, And cheerful wait his will; Thy hand, which guides my doubtful feet, Shall my desires fulfil. Mine innocence shalt thou display, And make thy judgments known, Fair as the light of dawning day, And glorious as the noon. The meek at last the earth possess, And are the heirs of heav'n; True riches, with abundant peace, To humble souls are giv'n. Rest in the Lord, and keep his way, Nor let your anger rise, Though Providence should long delay To punish haughty vice. Let sinners join to break your peace, And plot, and rage, and foam; The Lord derides them, for he sees Their day of vengeance come. They have drawn out the threat'ning sword, Have bent the murd'rous bow, To slay the men that fear the Lord, And bring the righteous low. My God shall break their bows, and burn Their persecuting darts, Shall their own swords against them turn, And pain surprise their hearts. Topics: End of the righteous and wicked; Punishment of sinners; Saints and sinner's end; Sinner and saint's portion; Portion of saints and sinners; Poor charity to them; Death of saints and sinners; Reproach removed; Prayer and faith of persecuted saints; Charity to the poor; Envy and unbelief cured; Fretfulness discouraged; Patience under persecutions; Prosperous sinners cursed; Religion in words and deeds; Saints patience and world's hatred; Sinner hatred and saint's patience; Unbelief and envy cured; World's hatred and saint's patience

Psalm 37: For evil-doers fret thou not

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 18 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 37 First Line: For evil-doers fret thou not Lyrics: 1For evil-doers fret thou not thyself unquietly; Nor do thou envy bear to those that work iniquity. 2For, even like unto the grass, soon be cut down shall they; And, like the green and tender herb, they wither shall away. 3Set thou thy trust upon the Lord, and be thou doing good; And so thou in the land shalt dwell, and verily have food. 4Delight thyself in God; he’ll give thine heart’s desire to thee. 5Thy way to God commit, him trust, it bring to pass shall he. 6And, like unto the light, he shall thy righteousness display; And he thy judgment shall bring forth like noon-tide of the day. 7Rest in the Lord, and patiently wait for him: do not fret For him who, prosp’ring in his way, success in sin doth get. 8Do thou from anger cease, and wrath see thou forsake also: Fret not thyself in any wise, that evil thou should’st do. 9For those that evil doers are shall be cut off and fall: But those that wait upon the Lord the earth inherit shall. 10For yet a little while, and then the wicked shall not be; His place thou shalt consider well, but it thou shalt not see. 11But by inheritance the earth the meek ones shall possess: They also shall delight themselves in an abundant peace. 12The wicked plots against the just, and at him whets his teeth: 13The Lord shall laugh at him, because his day he coming seeth. 14The wicked have drawn out the sword, and bent their bow, to slay The poor and needy, and to kill men of an upright way. 15But their own sword, which they have drawn, shall enter their own heart: Their bows which they have bent shall break, and into pieces part. 16A little that a just man hath is more and better far Than is the wealth of many such as lewd and wicked are. 17For sinners’ arms shall broken be; but God the just sustains. 18God knows the just man’s days, and still their heritage remains. 19They shall not be asham’d when they the evil time do see; And when the days of famine are, they satisfy’d shall be. 20But wicked men, and foes of God, as fat of lambs, decay; They shall consume, yea, into smoke they shall consume away. 21The wicked borrows, but the same again he doth not pay; Whereas the righteous mercy shews, and gives his own away. 22For such as blessed be of him the earth inherit shall; And they that cursed are of him shall be destroyed all. 23A good man’s footsteps by the Lord are ordered aright; And in the way wherein he walks he greatly doth delight. 24Although he fall, yet shall he not be cast down utterly; Because the Lord with his own hand upholds him mightily. 25I have been young, and now am old, yet have I never seen The just man left, nor that his seed for bread have beggars been. 26He’s ever merciful, and lends: his seed is bless’d therefore. 27Depart from evil, and do good, and dwell for evermore. 28For God loves judgment, and his saints leaves not in any case; They are kept ever: but cut off shall be the sinner’s race. 29The just inherit shall the land, and ever in it dwell: 30The just man’s mouth doth wisdom speak; his tongue doth judgment tell. 31In’s heart the law is of his God, his steps slide not away. 32The wicked man doth watch the just, and seeketh him to slay. 33Yet him the Lord will not forsake, nor leave him in his hands: The righteous will he not condemn, when he in judgment stands. 34Wait on the Lord, and keep his way, and thee exalt shall he Th’ earth to inherit; when cut off the wicked thou shalt see. 35I saw the wicked great in pow’r, spread like a green bay-tree: 36He pass’d, yea, was not; him I sought, but found he could not be. 37Mark thou the perfect, and behold the man of uprightness; Because that surely of this man the latter end is peace. 38But those men that transgressors are shall be destroy’d together; The latter end of wicked men shall be cut off for ever. 39But the salvation of the just is from the Lord above; He in the time of their distress their stay and strength doth prove. 40The Lord shall help, and them deliver: he shall them free and save From wicked men; because in him their confidence they have.

Tho' wicked Men grow rich or great

Appears in 15 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 37 Lyrics: 1 Tho' wicked Men grow rich or great, Yet let not their successful State Thy Anger, or thy Envy, raise; 2 For they, cut down, like tender Grass, Or like young Flow'rs, away shall pass, Whose blooming Beauty soon decays. 3 Depend on God, and Him obey; So thou within the Land shalt stay, Secure from Danger, and from Want; 4 Make His Commands thy chief Delight; And He, thy Duty to requite, Shall all thy earnest Wishes grant. 5 In all thy Ways trust thou the Lord, And He will needful Help afford, To perfect ev'ry just Design; 6 He'll make, like Light, serene and clear, Thy clouded Innocence appear, And as a mid-day Sun to shine. 7 With quiet Mind on God depend, And patiently for Him attend; Nor let thy Anger fondly rise, Tho' wicked men with Wealth abound, And with Success the Plots are crown'd, Which they maliciously devise. 8 From Anger cease, and Wrath forsake; Let no ungovern'd Passion make Thy wav'ring Heart espous their Crime: 9 For God shall sinful Men destroy; Whilst only they the Land enjoy, Who trust on Him, and wait His Time. 10 How soon shall wicked Men decay! Their Place shall vanish quite away, Nor by the strictest Search be found; 11 Whilst humble Souls possess the Earth, Rejoicing still with godly Mirth, With Peace and Plenty always crown'd. Part II 12 While sinful Crouds, with false Design, Against the righteous Few combine, And gnash their Teeth, and threat'ning stand; 13 God shall their empty Plots deride, And laugh at their defeated Pride: He sees their Ruin near at hand. 14 They draw the Sword, and bend the Bow, The Poor and Needy to o'erthrow, And Men of upright Lives to slay: 15 But their strong Bows shall soon be broke Their sharpen'd Weapon's mortal Stroke Thro' their own Hearts shall force its Way. 16 A Little, with God's Favour blest, That's by one righteous Men possess'd, The Wealth of many Bad excels: 17 For God supports the just Man's Cause; But, as for those that break his Laws, Their unsuccessful Pow'r He quells. 18 His constant Care the Upright guides, And over all their Life presides; Their Portion shall for ever last: 19 They, when Distress o'erwhelms the Earth, Shall be unmov'd, and ev'n in Dearth The happy Fruits of Plenty taste. 20 Not so the wicked Men, and those Who proudly dare God's Will oppose: Destruction is their hapless Share: Like Fat of Lambs, their Hopes, and they, Shall in an Instant melt away, And vanish into Smoke and Air. Part III 21 While Sinners, brought to sad Decay, Still borrow on, and never pay, The Just have Will and Pow'r to give; 22 For such as God vouchsafes to bless, Shall peaceably the Earth possess; And those He curses, shall not live. 23 The good Man's Way is God's Delight; He orders all the Steps aright, Of him that moves by his Command; 24 Though he sometimes may be distress'd; Yet shall he ne'er be quite oppress'd; For God upholds him with his Hand. 25 From my first youth, till Age prevail'd, I never saw the Righteous fail'd, Or Want o'ertake his num'rous Race, 26 Because Compassion fill'd his Heart, And he did chearfully impart, God made his offspring's Wealth increase. 27 With Caution shun each wicked Deed, In Virtue's Ways with Zeal proceed, And so prolong your happy Days: 28 For God, who Judgment loves, does still Preserve his Saints secure from Ill, While soon the wicked Race decays. 29,30,31 The Upright shall possess the land: His Portion shall for Ages stand; His Mouth with Wisdom is supply'd; His Tongue by Rules of Judgment moves; His Heart the Law of God approves; Therefore his Footsteps never slide. Part IV 32 In wait the watchful Sinner lies, In vain, his righteous to surprize, In vain, his Ruin does decree: 33 God will not him defenceless leave, To his Revenge expos'd, but save, And, when he's sentenc'd, set him free. 34 Wait still on God; keep his Commands; And thou, exalted in the land, Thy blest Possession ne'er shalt quit: The Wicked soon destroy'd shall be, And at his dismal Tragedy Thou shalt a safe Spectator sit. 35 The Wicked I in Pow'r have seen, And, like a Bay-tree, fresh and green, That spreads its pleasant Branches round; 36 But he was gone as swift as Thought; And tho' in ev'ry Place I sought, No Sign or Track of him I found. 37 Observe the perfect Man with Care, And mark all such as upright are; Their roughest Days in Peace shall end: 38 While on the latter End of those, Who dare God's sacred Will oppose. A common Ruin shall attend. 39 God to the Just will Aid afford; Their only Safeguard is the Lord; Their Strength, in time of Need, is He: 40 Because on Him they still depend, The Lord will timely Succour send, And from the Wicked set them free.

A Psalm of David

Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 37 First Line: Fret not thy self at wicked men Lyrics: 1 Fret not thy self at wicked men, for their prosperity; Nor be thou envious at the men who work iniquity. 2 For like the grass that flourished, cut quickly down are they; And like the green and tender herb, shall wither soon away. 3 Upon JEHOVAH put thy trust, and be thou doing good: So shalt thou dwell within the land, and truth* shall be thy food. 4 See that thou set thy hearts' delight chiefly upon the LORD: Then the just wishes of thy heart to thee he will afford. 5 Upon the LORD devolve thy way, by faith on Him depend; And He will bring thy good designs to a most happy end. 6 Yea, like the shining light will he they righteousness display; And He thy judgment will bring forth clear-shining as noon-day. 7 Rest on the LORD, and patiently wait for Him; fret not thou At him who prospers in his way in ill devices now. 8 All wrath relinquish utterly; cease from rash anger too: In no wise fret thy self, to move Thee any ill to do. 9 For those who evil doers are shall be cut off and fall; But those who on JEHOVAH wait the earth inherit shall. 10 For, yet a little while, and here the wicked shall not be. Yea thou shalt look and view his place but him thou shalt not see. 11 Whereas the meek and humble shall the earth as heirs possess; And thankfully delight themselves in plenteousness of peace. [2 Part] 12 The wicked plots against the just; they gnash their teeth and foam; 13 But them the Lord derides, and sees their fatal day will come. 14 The wicked forth their sword have drawn and bent their bow have they To cast the poor and needy down, The upright men to slay. 15 But their own swords into their hearts shall enter suddenly: Their bows which they have bent shall all in pieces broken be. 16 The little that a righteous man enjoys, is better far, Than when to many wicked join'd their stores of riches are. 17 For of ungodly men the arms shall wholly broken be; But those who righteous are, the LORD will hold up carefully. 18 The LORD, the days of upright men exactly knows; and sure Their promised inheritance for ever shall endure. 19 In dangerous and evil times, from shame they shall be free; And when the days of famine come, they satify'd shall be. 20 But wicked men shall perish soon; and who the LORD provoke, Shall like the fat of lambs consume, and vanish into smoke. [3 Part] 21 The man ungodly borrows much, and takes no are to pay; Whereas the just man mercy shews, and freely gives away. 22 For such as blessed are by Him, The earth inherit shall: But those who by Him cursed are, shall be cut off and fall. 23 The steps of good men by the LORD are ordered aright; And in their good and righteous way, He takes a great delight. 24 Altho' they fall, yet shall they not be cast down utterly; Because JEHOVAH with his hand upholds them carefully. 25 Nor in my youth, nor in my age, ev'n to my hoary head; Nor have I seen the just forsook, nor their seed begging bread. 26 He shews his mercy ev'ry day and lends to those who need; And blessing he behind him leaves, to all his godly seed. 27 Wherefore from evil far depart; do good; and then besure, Thou shalt have such a dwelling place as ever shall endure. 28 Because the LORD doth judgment love, his saints forsakes not He: Kept ever are they; but cut off, the sinner's race shall be. 29 The just inherit shall the land, And ever therein dwell. 30 The just man's mouth doth wisdom speak; His tongue right judgment tell. 31 The God's pure law is in his heart, none of his steps shall stray. 32 The wicked watches for the just, And seeks for him to slay. 33 But yet JEHOVAH will not leave the just man in his hands; Nor will the righteous man condemn when He in judgment stands. [4 Part] 34 Wait on the LORD, and keep his way; and Thee exalt will He, Th' earth to inherit, when cut off the wicked thou shalt see. 35 The wicked man I have beheld in dreadful pow'r and pride; Ev'n like a laurel flourishing, and spreading far and wide. 36 Nevertheless he pass'd away, and, lo he quite was gone; I searched for him, but could find no glimpse of such a one. 37 But mark the perfect, and observe the man of uprightness; And thou shalt see, that of this man the latter end is peace. 36 Whereas those who transgressors are, together perish shall; To be cut off shall be the end of men ungodly all. 39 But the salvation of the just does from JEHOVAH come: And he's their strength to whom they look in times most troublesome. 40 Yea help and free them will the LORD; he will defend the just From wicked men, He will them save, because in Him they trust.

Author: Mrs. Steele Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 261 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 37:5 Lyrics: 1 My God, my Father, blissful name! Oh, may I call thee mine? May I with sweet assurance claim A portion so divine? 2 This only can my fears control, And bid my sorrows fly: What harm can ever reach my soul, Beneath my Father's eye? 3 Whate'er thy providence denies, I cheerfully resign; Lord, thou art good and just and wise, I yield my will to thine. 4 Whate'er thy sacred will ordains, Still give me strength to bear: Let me but know my Father reigns, I'll trust his tender care. Thy Way and All Thy Sorrows

Author: P. Gerhardt, 1607-76; A. T. Russell, 1806-74 Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 10 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 37 Lyrics: 1 Thy way and all thy sorrows, Give thou into His hand, His gracious care unfailing, Who doth the heav’ns command; Their course and path He giveth To clouds and air and wind; A way thy feet may follow, He too for thee will find. 2 On Him be Thy reliance, As thou would'st prosper well; To make thy work enduring Thy mind on His must dwell. God yieldeth naught to sorrow And self tormenting care; Naught, naught with him availeth; No power save that of pray'r. 3 Thy truth and grace, O Father, Behold and surely know, Both what is good and evil, For mortal man below: And whatso'e'er Thou choosest Thou dost, great God, fulfill, And into being bringest Whate'er is in Thy will. 4 Thy way is ever open; Thou dost on naught depend; Thine act is only blessing, Thy path light without end. Thy work can no man hinder; Thy purpose none can stay, Since Thou to bless Thy children Through all dost make a way. 5 In vain the pow'rs of darkness Thy will, O God, oppose; High over all undoubting, Thy pleasure onward goes. Whate'er Thy will resolveth, Whate'er Thou dost intend, Its destined work performeth True to its aim and end. 6 Then hope, my feeble spirit, And be thou undismayed; God helps in ev'ry trial, And makes thee unafraid. Await God's time with pleasure, Then shall thine eyes behold The sun of joy and gladness His brightest beams unfold. 7 Arise, arise! thy sadness, Thy cares send far away; Away each thought afflicting That on the heart doth prey. Not in thy hands the guidance Of all events doth dwell; God on His throne o'erruleth, He guideth all things well. 8 Leave all to His direction; In wisdom He doth reign; Thy wonder far exceeding, He will His course maintain; So He as Him beseemeth, With wonder-working skill, Shall put away the sorrows That now thy spirit fill. 9 Awhile His consolation He will to thee deny, And seem as though in spirit He far from thee would fly; Awhile distress and anguish Shall compass thee around, Nor to thy supplication An answ'ring voice be found. 10 But if thou ne'er forsake Him, Thou shalt deliv'rance find; Behold all unexpected, He will thy soul unbind. He from thy heavy burden Will soon thy heart set free; Yea, from that weight no evil Hath yet befallen thee. 11 Thou child of truth, how blessed! A conqu'ror soon shalt be, With songs of glad thanksgiving A crown awaiteth thee. To thee the palm triumphal By god's own hand is giv'n, Thine, to His name who saved thee, To sing the songs of heav'n. 12 Give, Lord, this consummation To all our hearts’ distress, Our hands, our feet, O strengthen, In death our spirits bless. Thy truth and Thy protection For evermore we pray; With these in heav’nly glory Shall end our certain way. Topics: Epiphany 4 Used With Tune: BEFIEHL DU DEINE WEGE

Noli æmulari

Author: W. W. Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 37 First Line: Grudge not to see the wicked men Lyrics: 1 Grudge not to see the wicked men, in wealth to flourish still: Nor yet envy such as to ill, have bent and set their will. 2 For as the greene grasse and flourishing herbes, are cut and wither away: So shall their great prosperity soone passe, fade and decay. 3 Trust thou therefore in God alone, to do well give thy mind: So shalt thou have the land as thine, and there sure food shalt find. 4 In God set all thy heart's delight, and look what thou wouldst have, Or else canst wish in all the world, thou needst it not to crave. 5 Cast both thy selfe and thine affaires. on God with perfect trust: And thou shalt see with patience, the effect both sure and just. 6 Thy perfect life and godly name, he will cleare as the light: So that the Sun, even at noone daies, shall not shine halfe so bright. 7 Be still therefore, and steadfastly on God see thou wait then: Not shrinking for the prosperous state of lewd and wicked men. 8 Shake off despight, envy and hate, at least in any wise: Their wicked works avoid and flie and follow not their guise. 9 For every wicked man will God destroy both more and lesse: But such as trust in him are sure the land for to possesse. 10 Watch but a while, and thou shalt see no more the wicked traine: No not so much as house or place where once he did remaine. The second Part 11 But mercifull and humble men enjoy shall sea and land: In rest and peace they shall rejoyce, for nought shall them withstand. 12 The lewd men and malicious, against the just conspire: They gnash their teeth at him as men who do his bane desire. 13 But while the lewd men thus do think, the Lord laughs them to scorne: For why, he sees the terme approach, when they shall sigh and mourne. 14 The wicked have their sword out-drawn, their bow eke have they bent: To overthrow and kill the poore, as they the right way went. 15 But the same sword shall pierce their heart, which was to kill the just: Likewise the bow shall break to shivers wherein they put their trust. 16 Doubtlesse the just man's poore estate is better a greate deale more: Than all these lewd and wicked mens rich pompe and heaped store. 17 For be their power never so strong, God will it overthrow: Where contrary he doth preserve the humble man and low. 18 He sees by his great providence, the good mens trade and way: And will give them inheritance, which never shall decay. 19 They shall not be discouraged, when some are hard bestead: When others shall be hunger-bit, they shall be clad and fed. 20 For whosoever wicked is, and enemy to the Lord: Shall auaile, yea melt even as lambs grease or smoke that flies abroad. The third Part: 21 Behold, the wicked borrowes much, and mever paies againe: Whereas the just by liberall gifts, makes many glad and faine. 22 For they whom God doth blesse shall have the land for heritage. And they whom he doth curse likewise shall perish in his rage. 23 The Lord the just mans waies doth guide, and gives him good successe: To every thing he takes in hand he sendeth good addresse. 24 Though he doth fall yet he is sure not utterly to guaile: Because the Lord puts out his hand, at need and doth not faile. 25 I have been young, but now am old yet did I never see: The just man left nor yet his seed, go beg for misery. 26 He gives alwaies most liberally, and lends whereas is need: His children and posterity receive of God their meed. 27 Flie vice therefore and wickednessw, and vertue do embrace: So shall God grant thee long to have on earth a dwelling place. 28 For God so loveth equity, and shewes to his such grace: That he preserveth them alway: but stroyes the wicked race. 29 Whereas the good and godly men inherit shall the land: Having as Lords all things therein in their own power and hand. 30 The just mans mouth doth ever speake of matters wise and hie: His tongue doth talke to edifie, with truth and equity. 31 For in his heart the law of God his Lord doth still abode: So that wherever he goes or walks, his foot can never slide. 32 The wicked like a ravening wolfe, the just man doth beset: By all means seeking him to kill, if he fall in his net. The fourth Part 33 Though he should fall into his hands, yet God would succour send: Though men against him sentence give, God would him yet defend. 34 Wait thou on God and keep his way, he shall preserve thee then The earth to rule, and thou shalt see destroid these wicked men. 35 The wicked have I seen most strong, and plac'd in high degree: Flourishing in all wealth and store, as doth the Lawrell tree. 36 But suddenly he past away, and lo he quite was gone: Then I him sought, but could not find the place where dwelt such one. 37 Mark and behold the perfect man, how God doth him increase: For the just man shall have at length great joy with rest and peace. 38 As for transgressors, wo to them, Destroid they all shall be: God will cut off their budding race and rich posterity. 39 But the salvation of the just doth come from God above: Who in their trouble sends them aid of his meere grace and love. 40 God doth them help, save and deliver from lewd men and unjust: And still will save them whilst that they in him do put their trust.

While we do His good will, He abides with us still, And with all who will trust and obey. Refrain: Trust and obey; for there’s no other way To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. 2 Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies, But His smile quickly drives it away! Not a doubt nor a fear, not a sigh nor a tear, Can abide while we trust and obey. [Refrain] 3 Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share, But our toil He doth richly repay; Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross, But is blessed if we trust and obey. [Refrain] 4 But we never can prove the delights of His love, Until all on the altar we lay, For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows, Are for them who will trust and obey. [Refrain] 5 Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet, Or we’ll walk by His side in the way; For the favor He shows, and the joy He bestows Are for them who will trust and obey.
