John E. Gould

1821 - 1875 Person Name: J. E. Gould Hymnal Number: 200 Composer of "[Jesus, Saviour, pilot me]" in Jubilate John Edgar Gould USA 1821-1875. Born in Bangor, ME, he became a musician. He managed music stores in New York City and Philadelphia, PA., the latter with composer partner, William Fischer. He married Josephine Louisa Barrows, and they had seven children: Blanche, Marie, Ida, John, Josephine, Josephine, and Augusta. He compiled eight religious songbooks from 1846 thru 1869. He died while traveling in Algiers, Africa, and was buried in Philadelphia, PA. John Perry

Maxwell N. Cornelius

1842 - 1893 Hymnal Number: 13 Author of "Sometime We'll Understand" in Jubilate Rv Maxwell Newton Cornelius DD USA 1842-1893. Son of a farmer, he started his career as a carpenter, then a building contractor. He married Mary E. Davinson. They had a daughter, Nellie G., who died in infancy. He had an accident, resulting in a leg amputation, after which he entered the ministry. Educated at the Vermillion Institute, Haynesville, OH, he then attended seminary there, 1867-1871, and was ordained in the Pittsburgh Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church USA. He served at the Oakdale Presbyterian Church, Oakdale, PA, the Presbyterian church in Altoona, PA, 1876-1885, in Pasadena, CA, 1885-1890, in San Francisco, 1890-1891, and at the Eastern Presbyterian Church, Washington, DC, until his death from pneumonia in 1893, a year after his wife's death. Samuel Arnold

Carrie E. Rounsefell

She married William Rounsefell, a bookkeeper. She was known as a singing evangelist throughout New England and New York, where she toured with a small autoharp (zither). She died at Durham, ME. William Shrubsole

1760 - 1806 Hymnal Number: 198 Composer of "[All hail the pow'r of Jesus' name!]" in Jubilate William Shrubsole (bap. 1760, d. 1806), organist. United Kingdom.When young, he sang in the choir at Canterbury Cathedral, He became organist at Bangor Cathedral, when he was dismissed for attending non-comformist meetings. He then became organist of Spa Fields Chapel, London, holding that post until his death. He was a successful teacher. He was an alto singer and sung at Westminster Abbey and Drury Lane churches. He knew Edward Perronet, who wrote the words to the hymn he composed music for. Perronet left Schrubsole property in his will. John Perry Not to be confused with W.
