Jesus Christ, My Sure Defense

Author: Catherine Winkworth; Unknown Meter: 7.8.7.8.7.7 Appears in 56 hymnals Topics: The Church Year Easter Lyrics: 1 Jesus Christ, my sure Defense And my Savior, ever liveth; Knowing this, my confidence Rests upon the hope it giveth Though the night of death be fraught Still with many an anxious tho't. 2 Jesus, my Redeemer, lives; I, too, unto life shall waken. Endless joy my Savior gives; Shall my courage, then, be shaken? Shall I fear, or could the Head Rise and leave His members dead? 3 Nay, too closely am I bound Unto Him by hope forever; Faith's strong hand the Rock hath found, Grasped it, and will leave it never; Even death now cannot part From its Lord the trusting heart. 4 I am flesh and must return Unto dust, whence I am taken; But by faith I now discern That from death I shall awaken With my Savior to abide In His glory, at His side. 5 Glorified, I shall anew With this flesh then be enshrouded; In this body I shall view God, my Lord, with eyes unclouded; In this flesh I then shall see Jesus Christ eternally. 6 Then these eyes my Lord shall know, My Redeemer and my Brother; In His love my soul shall glow-- I myself, and not another! Then the weakness I feel here Shall forever disappear. 7 They who sorrow here and moan There in gladness shall be reigning; Earthly here the seed is sown, There immortal life attaining. Here our sinful bodies die, Glorified to dwell on high. 8 Then take comfort and rejoice, For His members Christ will cherish. Fear not, they will hear His voice; Dying, they shall never perish; For the very grave is stirred When the trumpet's blast is heard. 9 Laugh to scorn the gloomy grave And at death no longer tremble; He, the Lord, who came to save Will at last His own assemble. They will go their Lord to meet, Treading death beneath their feet. 10 Oh, then, draw away your hearts Now from pleasures base and hollow. There to share what He imparts, Here His footsteps ye must follow. Fix your hearts beyond the skies, Whither ye yourselves would rise. Amen. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:35-58 Used With Tune: JESUS, MEINE ZUVERSICHT

O perfect life of love!

Author: Henry Williams Baker Appears in 86 hymnals Topics: The Church Year Good Friday Lyrics: 1 O perfect life of love! All, all is finished now; All that He left His throne above To do for us below. 2 No work is left undone Of all the Father willed; His toils, His sorrows, one by one, The Scripture have fulfilled. 3 No pain that we can share But He has felt its smart: All forms of human grief and care Have pierced that tender heart. 4 In perfect love He dies; For me He dies, for me: O all-atoning Sacrifice, I cling by faith to Thee. 5 Work then, O Lord, in me, As Thou for me hast wrought; And let my love the answer be To grace Thy love has brought. Amen. Used With Tune: GORTON

Littledale, 1833-1890 Meter: 6.6.11.6.6.11 Appears in 109 hymnals Topics: Church Year Pentecost Lyrics: 1 Come down, O Love divine; seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with your own ardor glowing: O Comforter, draw near; within my heart appear, and kindle it, your holy flame bestowing. 2 Oh, let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming: and let your glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. 3 And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far out pass the power of human telling: for none can guess God's grace, till Love creates a place wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling. Ye choirs of new Jerusalem

Author: Fulbert of Chartres, 9??-1028; Robert Campbell, 1814-1868 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 68 hymnals Topics: Hymns for the Church Year Easter Lyrics: 1 Ye choirs of new Jerusalem, your sweetest notes employ, the Paschal victory to hymn in strains of holy joy. 2 For Judah's lion burst his chains, crushing the serpent's head; and cries aloud through death's domains, to wake the imprisoned dead. 3 Devouring depths of hell their prey at his command restore; his ransomed hosts pursue their way where Jesus goes before. 4 Triumphant in his glory now to him all power is given; to him in one communion bow all saints in earth and heaven. 5 While we, his soldiers, praise our King, his mercy we implore, within his palace bright to bring and keep us evermore. 6 All glory to the Father be, all glory to the Son, all glory, Holy Ghost, to thee, while endless ages run. Alleluia! Amen Used With Tune: ST FULBERT

Creator of the starry height

Author: Anonymous; John Mason Neale, 1818-1866 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 91 hymnals Topics: Hymns for the Church Year Advent Lyrics: 1 Creator of the starry height, thy people's everlasting Light, Jesu, Redeemer of us all, hear thou thy servants when they call. 2 Thou, sorrowing at the helpless cry of all creation doomed to die, didst come to save our fallen race by healing gifts of heavenly grace. 3 When earth was near its evening hour, thou didst, in love's redeeming power, like bridegroom from his chamber, come forth from a Virgin-mother's womb. 4 At thy great name, exalted now, all knees in lowly homage bow; all things in heaven and earth adore, and own thee King forevermore. 5 To thee, O Holy One, we pray, our Judge in that tremendous day, ward off, while yet we dwell below, the weapons of our crafty foe. 6 To God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit, Three in One, praise, honour, might, and glory be from age to age eternally. Used With Tune: CONDITOR ALME Text Sources: c6th century, Latin; Other translators: Editors of 'Hymns Ancient and Modern"

Rejoice, Rejoice, Believers

Author: Laurentius Laurenti; Sarah Borthwick Findlater Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 335 hymnals Topics: Church Year Advent First Line: Rejoice, rejoice believers Lyrics: 1 Rejoice, rejoice, believers, and let your lights appear; the evening is advancing, and darker night is near. The Bridegroom is arising and soon is drawing nigh. Up, pray and watch and wrestle; at midnight comes the cry. 2 The watchers on the mountain proclaim the Bridegroom near; go forth as he approaches, with alleluias clear. The marriage feast is waiting; the gates wide open stand. Arise, O heirs of glory; the Bridegroom is at hand. 3 The saints, who here in patience their cross and sufferings bore, shall live and reign forever when sorrow is no more. Around the throne of glory the Lamb they shall behold; in triumph cast before him their diadems of gold. 4 Our hope and expectation, O Jesus, now appear; arise, O Sun so longed for, o'er this benighted sphere. With hearts and hands uplifted, we plead, O Lord, to see the day of earth's redemption that sets your people free! Scripture: Matthew 25:1-13 Used With Tune: HAF TRONES LAMPA FÄRDIG Text Sources: Alt. in The Hymnal, 1982
