We Sing the Mighty Power of God

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 471 hymnals Lyrics: 1 We sing the mighty power of God that made the mountains rise, that spread the flowing seas abroad and built the lofty skies. We sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day; the moon shines full at his command, and all the stars obey. 2 We sing the goodness of the Lord that filled the earth with food; he formed the creatures with his word and then pronounced them good. Lord, how your wonders are displayed, where'er we turn our eyes, if we survey the ground we tread or gaze upon the skies. 3 There's not a plant or flower below but makes your glories known, and clouds arise and tempests blow by order from your throne; while all that borrows life from you is ever in your care, and everywhere that we can be, you, God, are present there. When Jesus Left His Father's Throne

Author: James Montgomery, 1771-1854 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 128 hymnals Lyrics: 1 When Jesus left his Father's throne, He chose a humble birth; Like us, unhonored and unknown, He came to dwell on earth. Like him may we be found below, In wisdom's paths of peace; Like him in grace and knowledge grow, As years and strength increase. 2 Sweet were his words and kind his look, When mothers round him pressed; Their infants in his arms he took, And on his bosom blessed. Safe from the world's alluring harms, Beneath his watchful eye, Thus in the circle of his arms May we for ever lie. 3 When Jesus into Zion rode, The children sang around; For joy they plucked the palms and strowed Their garments on the ground. Hosanna our glad voices raise, Hosanna to our King! Should we forget our Savior's praise, The stones themselves would sing. Topics: Jesus Christ; Palm/Passion Sunday Scripture: Matthew 21:1-11 Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD

O Sing a Song of Bethlehem

Author: Louis F. Benson Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 64 hymnals Lyrics: 1. O sing a song of Bethlehem, Of shepherds watching there, And of the news that came to them From angels in the air. The light that shone on Bethlehem Fills all the world today; Of Jesus' birth and peace on earth The angels sing alway. 2. O sing a song of Nazareth, Of sunny days of joy, O sing of fragrant flowers' breath, And of the sinless Boy; For now the flow'rs of Nazareth In ev'ry heart may grow; Now spreads the fame of His dear name On all the winds that blow. 3. O sing a song of Galilee, Of lake and woods and hil, Of Him who walked upon the sea And bade its waves be still; For tho' like waves on Galilee, Dark seas of trouble roll, When faith has heard the Master's word, Falls peace upon the soul. 4. O sing a song of Calvary, Its glory and dismay; Of Him who hung upon the tree And took our sins away. For He who died on Calvary Is risen from the grave, And Christ, our Lord, by heav'n adored, Is mighty now to save. Scripture: Luke 2:11 Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD

I Feel the Winds of God Today

Author: Jessie Adams Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 27 hymnals Lyrics: 1 I feel the winds of God today; Today my sail I lift, Though heavy, oft with drenching spray, And torn with many a rift; If hope but light the water’s crest, And Christ my bark will use, I’ll seek the seas at His behest, And brave another cruise. 2 It is the wind of God that dries My vain, regretful tears, Until with braver thoughts shall rise The purer, brighter years; If cast on shores of selfish ease Or pleasure I should be, Lord, let me feel Thy freshening breeze, And I’ll put back to sea. 3 If ever I forget Thy love And how that love was shown, Lift high the blood red flag above; It bears Thy name alone. Great Pilot of my onward way, Thou wilt not let me drift; I feel the winds of Go Amen. My God, I Love Thee

Author: Francis Xavier, 16th cent.; Edward Caswall Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 208 hymnals First Line: My God, I love Thee, not because Lyrics: 1 My God, I love Thee; not because I hope for heav'n thereby, nor yet for fear that loving not I might forever die; but for that Thou didst all mankind upon the cross embrace; for us didst bear the nails and spear, and manifold disgrace; 2 And griefs and torments numberless, and sweat of agony; e'en death itself, and all for man, who was Thine enemy. Then why, most loving Jesus Christ, should I not love Thee well? Not for the sake of winning heav'n, nor any fear of hell; 3 Not with the hope of gaining aught, nor seeking a reward, but as Thyself hast loved me, O ever loving Lord! E'en so I love Thee, and will love, and in Thy praise will sing, solely because Thou art my God and my eternal King! Topics: Salvation Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD

Come, Let Us Use the Grace Divine

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 153 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Come, let us use the grace divine, and all with one accord, in a perpetual covenant join ourselves to Christ the Lord; Give up ourselves, thru Jesus' power, his name to glorify; and promise, in this sacred hour, for God to live and die. 2. The covenant we this moment make be ever kept in mind; we will no more our God forsake, or cast these words behind. We never will throw off the fear of God who hears our vow; and if thou art well pleased to hear, come down and meet us now. 3. Thee, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, let all our hearts receive, present with thy celestial host the peaceful answer give; to each covenant the blood apply which takes our sins away, and register our names on high and keep us to that day! To Mock Your Reign

Author: Fred Pratt Green, 1903-2000 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 14 hymnals First Line: To mock your reign, O dearest Lord Lyrics: 1 To mock your reign, O dearest Lord, they made a crown of thorns; set you with taunts along that road from which no one returns. They could not know, as we do now, how glorious is that crown; that thorns would flower upon your brow, your sorrows heal our own. 2 In mock acclaim, O gracious Lord, they snatched a purple cloak; your passion turned, for all they cared, into a soldier's joke. They could not know, as we do now, that though we merit blame, you will your robe of mercy throw around our naked shame. 3 A sceptered reed, O patient Lord, they thrust into your hand, and acted out their grim charade to its appointed end. They could not know, as we do now, though empires rise and fall, your kingdom shall not cease to grow till love embraces all. Scripture: Matthew 27:27-41 Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD

Your Hand, O Lord, in Days of Old

Author: Edward H. Plumptre, 1821-91 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 177 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Your hand, O Lord, in days of old Was strong to heal and save; It triumphed o'er disease and death, All darkness and the grave. To you they came, the blind, the dumb, The paralyzed and lame, The lepers in their misery, The sick with fevered frame. 2 Your touch then, Lord, brought life and health, Gave speech and strength and sight; And youth renewed and frenzy calmed Revealed you, Lord of light. And now, O Lord, be near to bless, Almighty as before, In crowded street, by beds of pain, As by Gennes'ret's shore. 3 Oh, be our great deliv'rer still, The Lord of life and death; Restore and quicken, soothe and bless, With your life-giving breath. To hands that work and eyes that see Give wisdom's healing pow'r That whole and sick and weak and strong May praise you evermore. Topics: Social Concern; Social Concern Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD

'Twas in the Watches of the Night

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 62 hymnals Lyrics: 1. ’Twas in the watches of the night I thought upon Thy power, I kept Thy lovely face in sight amidst the darkest hour. My flesh lay resting on my bed, my soul arose on high: My God, my life my hope, I said, bring Thy salvation nigh. 2. My spirit labors up Thine hill, and climbs the heav’nly road; But Thy right hand upholds me still, while I pursue my God. Thy mercy stretches o’er my head the shadow of Thy wings; My heart rejoices in Thine aid, my tongue awakes and sings. 3. But the destroyers of my peace shall fret and rage in vain; The tempter shall for ever cease, and all my sins be slain. Thy sword shall give my foes to death, and send them down to dwell, In the dark caverns of the earth, or to the depths of hell. Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD Text Sources: The Psalms of David, 1719

O Jesus, Crowned with All Renown

Author: Edward W. Benson Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 18 hymnals Lyrics: 1. O Jesus, crowned with all renown, Since Thou the earth hast trod, Thou reignest, and by Thee come down Henceforth the gifts of God. Thine is the health and Thine the wealth That in our halls abound, And Thine the beauty and the joy With which the years are crowned. 2. Lord, in their change, let frost and heat, And winds and dews be giv’n; All fostering power, all influence sweet, Breathe from the bounteous Heav’n. Attemper fair with gentle air The sunshine and the rain, That kindly earth with timely birth May yield her fruits again. 3. That we may feed the poor aright, And gathering round Thy throne, Here, in the holy angels’ sight, Repay Thee of Thine own: That we may praise Thee all our days, And with the Father’s name, And with the Holy Spirit’s gifts, The Savior’s love proclaim. No Tramp of Soldiers' Marching Feet

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 7 hymnals First Line: No tramp of solders' marching feet Lyrics: 1 No tramp of soldiers’ marching feet With banners and with drums, No sound of music’s martial beat: “The King of glory comes!” To greet what pomp of kingly pride No bells in triumph ring, No city gates swing open wide: “Behold, behold your King!” 2 And yet he comes. The children cheer; With palms his path is strown. With ev’ry step the cross draws near: The King of glory’s throne. Astride a colt he passes by As loud hosannas ring, Or else the very stones would cry: “Behold, behold your King!” 3 What fading flow’rs his road adorn; The palms, how soon laid down! No bloom or leaf but only thorn The King of glory’s crown. The soldiers mock, the rabble cries, The streets with tumult ring, As Pilate to the mob replies: “Behold, behold your King!” 4 Now he, who bore for mortals’ sake The cross and all its pains And chose a servant’s form to take, The King of glory reigns. Hosanna to the Savior’s Name Till heaven’s rafters ring, And all the ransomed host proclaim: “Behold, behold your King!” Topics: Palm Sunday Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD

O King of Glory! David's Son!

Author: Martin Behm; Catherine Winkworth Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 27 hymnals First Line: O King of Glory! David's Son Lyrics: 1. O King of Glory! David’s Son! Our Sovereign and our Friend! In Heav’n forever stands Thy throne, Thy kingdom hath no end: Oh now to all men, far and near, Lord, make it known, we pray, That as in Heav’n all creatures here May know Thee and obey. 2. The Eastern sages gladly bring Their tribute-gifts to Thee; They witness that Thou art their King, And humbly bow the knee; To Thee the morning star doth lead, To Thee th’inspirèd Word, We hail Thee, Savior in our need, We worship Thee, the Lord. 3. Ah look on me with pitying grace, Though weak and poor I be, Within Thy kingdom grant a place Secure and blest to me. Oh rescue me from all my woes, And shield me with Thine arm From sin and death, the mighty foes That daily seek our harm. 4. And bid Thy Word, the fairest Star, Within us clearly shine; Keep sin and all false doctrine far, Since Thou hast claimed us Thine: Let us Thy name aright confess, And with Thy Christendom, Our King and Savior own and bless Through all the world to come. Deep in the Shadows of the Past

Author: Brian Wren Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 9 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Deep in the shadows of the past, far out from settled lands, some nomads traveled with their God across the desert sands. The dawning hope of humankind by them was sensed and shown; a promise calling them ahead, a future yet unknown. 2 While others bowed to changeless gods they met a mystery, invisible, without a name: "I AM WHAT I WILL BE"; and by their tents, around their fires, in story, song and law, they praised, remembered, handed on a past that promised more. 3 From Exodus to Pentecost the promise changed and grew, while some, remembering the past, recorded what they knew, or with their letters and laments, their prophecy and praise recovered, kindled and expressed new hope for changing days. 4 For all the writings that survived, for leaders, long ago, who sifted, copied and preserved the Bible that we know, give thanks, and find its story yet our promise, strength and call, the model of emerging faith, alive with hope for all. In Every Place Where God Is Praised (Doquiera que se alabe a Dios)

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr., b. 1944; Gerardo Oberman, b. 1965 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: In ev'ry place where God is praised (Doquiera que se alabe a Dios) Lyrics: 1 In ev'ry place where God is praised By many or by few; In ev'ry heart where prayer breathes life And hope begins anew; Where ever searching leads to faith Or love melts hearts of stone; Where new life rises from death's hold: God's presence will be known. 2 In worship we draw near to God By list'ning for the Word That weaves through scripture, sermon, song, And lifts our hearts when heard. Then to the holy table called, We come with hands unfurled To feast on gifts that help us be Christ's body in the world. 3 Christ sends us to the world to live As light and salt and yeast, With willing hands to seek and serve The last, the lost, the least. To go where human needs are great, Dreams fade and fears increase: With pris'ner, patient, refugee, To share the Spirit's peace. 4 That quiet peace surpasses all Our striving seeks to gain And helps us find in servanthood A way made new and plain. The God who brought us safe thus far, Who bids us trust and dare, Still goes before us through life's maze And waits to meet us there. Hymn to a Gracious Sovereign

Author: Neil Barham Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: O God the deep immutable Lyrics: 1. O God the deep immutable, the changeless, wise and still, You’re the absolute, eternal One; You wield the sovereign will. Deep Heav’n itself and even time must bend beneath your sway. With a whispered thought you banish night in a flash of blinding day. 2. The seas are boundaried by your word; great mountains heed your call. Majestic swirls of galaxies adorn your royal hall. The centuries are lumps of clay shaped by your strength and skill. You mold the long millennia to the dictates of your will. 3. The boundless, black-robed skies proclaim your vast, astonishing might: Their flaming jewels rejoice for you in silent shouts of light. With sure and sovereign strokes your hands finger the cosmic strings, And play celestial symphonies as all creation sings. 4. And silent now, the angels stare; stunned seraphs blush, amazed; Great Michael sheaths the sword that at the Gate of Eden blazed. Mighty Gabriel sets his trump aside, and listens to his Lord, As Love incomprehensible enfleshes the Living Word. 5. Now space and time have cracked before the size of this event: The Godhead shudders as the glorious Son to Hell is sent. Though Very God of Very God, He counts it all but loss, And comes and suffers as a man, from the manger to the Cross. Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD

If Christ Had Not Been Raised from Death

Author: Christopher Idle, 1938- Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 7 hymnals Lyrics: 1 If Christ had not been raised from death our faith would be in vain, our preaching but a waste of breath, our sin and guilt remain. But now the Lord is risen indeed; he rules in earth and heaven: his Gospel meets a world of need-- in Christ we are forgiven. 2 If Christ still lay within the tomb then death would be the end, and we should face our final doom with neither guide nor friend. But now the Saviour is raised up, so when a Christian dies we mourn, yet look to God in hope-- in Christ the saints arise! 3 If Christ had not been truly raised his church would live a lie: his name should never more be praised, his words deserve to die. But now our great Redeemer lives; through him we are restored: his word endures, his church revives in Christ, our risen Lord. Scripture: Isaiah 29:16 Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD
