Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 124 hymnals Matching Instances: 26 Lyrics: 1. Praise the Lord who reigns above and keeps His court below; Praise the holy God of love and all His greatness show; Praise Him for His noble deeds; praise Him for His matchless power; Him from whom all good proceeds let earth and Heaven adore. 2. Publish, spread to all around the great Jehovah’s name, Let the trumpet’s martial sound the Lord of hosts proclaim: Praise Him in the sacred dance, harmony’s full concert raise, Let the virgin choir advance, and move but to His praise. 3. Celebrate th’eternal God with harp and psaltery, Timbrels soft and cymbals loud in this high praise agree; Praise with every tuneful string; all the reach of heavenly art, All the powers of music bring, the music of the heart. 4. God, in whom they move and live, let every creature sing, Glory to their maker give, and homage to their King. Hallowed be Thy name beneath, as in Heaven on earth adored; Praise the Lord in every breath, let all things praise the Lord. Glory be to God on high

Author: Charles Wesley, 1707-1788 Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 4 hymnals Matching Instances: 2 Lyrics: 1 Glory be to God on high, and peace on earth descend; God comes down, he bows the sky, and shows himself our friend! God the invisible appears, God the blest, the great I AM, sojourns in this vale of tears, and Jesus is his name. 2 Him the angels all adored, their maker and their king: tidings of their humbled Lord they now to mortals bring: emptied of his majesty, of his dazzling glories shorn, being’s source begins to be, and God himself is born! 3 See the eternal Son of God a mortal son of man, dwelling in an earthly clod whom heaven cannot contain! Stand amazed ye heavens at this! See the Lord of earth and skies humbled to the dust he is, and in a manger lies! 4 We earth's children now rejoice, the Prince of peace proclaim, with heaven’s host lift up our voice, and shout Emmanuel’s name; knees and hearts to him we bow; of our flesh, and of our bone, Jesus is our brother now, and God is all our own! Jesus, let Thy pitying eye

Author: C. Wesley, 1707-1788 Appears in 302 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 Jesus, let Thy pitying eye Call back a wandering sheep; False to Thee, like Peter, I Would fain, like Peter, weep; Let me be by grace restored, On me be all long-suffering shown; Turn, and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone. 2 Saviour, Prince, enthrone above, Repentance to impart, Give me, through Thy dying love, The humble, contrite heart; Speak the reconciling word, And let Thy mercy melt me down; Turn, and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone. 3 For Thine own compassion's sake The gracious wonder show; Cast my sins behind Thy back, And wash me white as snow, Speak my paradise restored Redeem me by Thy grace alone; Turn, and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone. 4 Look, as when Thy languid eye Was closed, that we might live; "Father," at the point to die My Saviour gasped "forgive!" Surely, with that dying word, He turns, and looks, and cries, "'Tis done!" O my bleeding, loving Lord, Thou break'st my heart of stone! Hearken to the Solemn Voice

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 29 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1. Hearken to the solemn voice, the awful midnight cry; Waiting souls, rejoice, rejoice, and see the Bridegroom nigh; Lo! He comes to keep His Word, light and joy His looks impart; Go ye forth to meet your Lord, and meet Him in your heart. 2. Ye who faint beneath the load of sin, your heads lift up; See your great redeeming God, He comes, and bids you hope: In the midnight of your grief, Jesus doth His mourners cheer; Lo! He brings you sure relief; believe, and feel Him here. 3. Ye whose loins are girt, stand forth! Whose lamps are burning bright, Worthy, in your Savior’s worth, to walk with Him in white: Jesus bids your hearts be clean, bids you all His promise prove; Jesus comes to cast out sin, and perfect you in love. 4. Wait we all in patient hope, till Christ, the Judge, shall come, We shall soon be all caught up to meet the general doom: In an hour to us unknown, as a thief in deepest night, Christ shall suddenly come down, with all His saints in light. 5. Happy he whom Christ shall find watching to see Him come; Him the Judge of all mankind shall bear triumphant home: Who can answer to His Word? Which of you dares meet His day? Rise, and come to judgment!—Lord, we rise, and come away. Used With Tune: AMSTERDAM Text Sources: Hymns and Sacred Poems, 1742

When Descending from the Sky

Author: John Newton Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 19 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1. When descending from the sky The Bridegroom shall appear; And the solemn midnight cry, Shall call professors near: How the sound our hearts will damp! How will shame o’erspread each face! If we only have a lamp, Without the oil of grace. 2. Foolish virgins then will wake And seek for a supply; But in vain the pains they take To borrow or to buy: Then with those they now despise, Earnestly they’ll wish to share; But the best, among the wise, Will have no oil to spare. 3. Wise are they, and truly blest, Who then shall ready be But despair will seize the rest, And dreadful misery: Once, they’ll cry, we scorned to doubt, Though in lies our trust we put; Now our lamp of hope is out, The door of mercy shut. 4. If they then presume to plead, Lord open to us now; We on earth have heard and prayed, And with thy saints did bow: He will answer from his throne, Though you with My people mixed, Yet to Me you ne’er were known, Depart, your doom is fixed. 5. O that none who worship here May hear that word, Depart! Lord impress a godly fear On each professor’s heart: Help us, Lord, to search the camp, Let us not ourselves beguile; Trusting to a dying lamp Without a stock of oil. O the Depth of Love Divine

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 6 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 O the depth of love divine, the unfathomable grace! Who shall say how bread and wine God into us conveys! How the bread his flesh imparts, how the wine transmits his blood, fills his faithful people’s hearts with all the life of God! 2 Let the wisest mortals show how we the grace receive; feeble elements bestow a power not theirs to give. Who explains the wondrous way, how through these the virtue came? These the virtue did convey, yet still remain the same. 3 How can spirits heavenward rise, by earthly matter fed, drink herewith divine supplies and eat immortal bread? Ask the Father’s wisdom how: Christ who did the means ordain; angels round our altars bow to search it out, in vain. 4 Sure and real is the grace, the manner be unknown; only meet us in thy ways and perfect us in one. Let us taste the heavenly powers, Lord, we ask for nothing more. Thine to bless, ’tis only ours to wonder and adore. Scripture: John 6:35-58 Used With Tune: AMSTERDAM

Let The World Lament Their Dead

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 2 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 Let the world lament their dead, As sorrowing without hope; When a friend of ours is freed, We cheerfully look up, Cannot murmur or complain, For our dead we cannot grieve, Death to them, to us, is gain; In Jesus we believe. 2 We believe that Christ our head For us resigned His breath, He was numbered with the dead, And dying conquered death; Burst the barriers of the tomb: Death could Him no longer keep, He is the first-fruits become Of those in Him that sleep. 3 God, who Him to life restored, Shall all His members raise, Bring them quickened with their Lord, The children of His grace. We who then on earth remain, Shall not sooner be brought home; All the dead shall rise again To meet the general doom. 4 Jesus, faithful to His word, Shall with a shout descend; All Heaven’s host their glorious Lord Shall pompously attend; Christ shall come with dreadful noise, Lightnings swift, and thunders loud, With the great archangel’s voice, And with the trump of God. 5 First the dead in Christ shall rise; Then we who yet remain Shall be caught up to the skies, And see our Lord again; We shall meet Him in the air, All rapt up to Heaven shall be, See, and love, and praise Him there To all eternity. 6 Who can tell the happiness This glorious hope affords! Joy unuttered we possess In these reviving words: Happy while on earth we breathe, Mightier bliss ordained to know, Trampling upon sin and death, To the third Heaven we go. Maker, Savior Of Mankind

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 26 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 Maker, Savior of mankind, Who hast on me bestowed, An immortal soul, designed To be the house of God: Come, and now reside in me, Never, never to remove; Make me just and good, like Thee, And full of power and love. 2 Bid in me Thine image rise, A saint, a creature new; True, and merciful, and wise, And pure and happy, too; This Thy primitive design, That I should in Thee be blest; Should within Thine arms divine, For ever, ever rest. 3 Let Thy will in me be done; Fulfill my heart’s desire, Thee to know, and love alone, And rise in raptures higher. Thee descending on a cloud, Till with ravished eyes I see; Then shall I be filled with God To all eternity. Used With Tune: AMSTERDAM Text Sources: Hymns for Children, 1763

Once A Woman Silent Stood

Author: John Newton Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 7 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 Once a woman silent stood While Jesus sat at meat; From her eyes she poured a flood, To wash His sacred feet: Shame and wonder, joy and love, All at once possessed her mind, That she e’er so vile could prove, Yet now forgiveness find. 2 "How came this vile woman here? Will Jesus notice such? Sure, if He a prophet were, He would disdain her touch!" Simon thus, with scornful heart, Slighted one whom Jesus loved, But her Savior took her part, And thus his pride reproved. 3 "If two men in debt were bound, One less, the other more; Fifty, or five hundred pound, And both alike were poor; Should the lender both forgive, When he saw them both distressed; Which of them would you believe, Engaged to love him best?" 4 "Surely he who much did owe," The Pharisee replied; Then our Lord, “By judging so, Thou dost for her decide: Simon, if like her you knew, How much you forgiveness need; You like her had acted too, And welcomed Me indeed! 5 "When the load of sin is felt, And much forgiveness known; Then the heart of course will melt, Though hard before as stone: Blame not then, her love and tears, Greatly she in debt has been: But I have removed her fears, And pardoned all her sin." 6 When I read this woman’s case, Her love and humble zeal; I confess, with shame of face, My heart is made of steel; Much has been forgiv’n to me, Jesus paid my heavy score, What a creature must I be, That I can love no more! Jesus, Fix Thy Kingdom Here

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 1 hymnal Matching Instances: 1 First Line: Jesus, fix Thy kingdom here! Lyrics: 1 Jesus, fix Thy kingdom here! Thy kingdom is the stone, Sent from Heav’n in man t’appear, And stand on earth alone; Let it now the image smite, Break the iron and the clay, Conquer, not by power or might, And force the world t’obey. 2 By this stone to powder ground The kingdoms all shall be: Then their place no more is found, When earth submits to Thee; Let Thy kingdom now prevail, All opposing power disperse, To a boundless mountain swell, And fill the universe. O The Blood, The Precious Blood

Author: Charles Wesley, 1707-1788 Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 1 hymnal Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 O the blood, the precious blood, That streams from yonder tree! Glory to th’ incarnate God Who suffers death for me! Me to save from endless pain, Me to mount above the skies, God becomes a mortal man, And bows His head and dies. 2 Him as on the altar laid Ev’n now by faith I view, Suffering in the sinner’s stead The death to sinners due: Say not ye, the deed is past, Now His mortal pang I feel, Still He pants, and groans His last, He dies for sinners still. 3 Close beneath the cursèd wood My prostrate soul remains, Gasping for the balmy blood That starts from Jesus’ veins: Wilt Thou not one drop afford? Yes, Thou dost the comfort give: O my bleeding, loving Lord, Thou diedst that I may live. 4 Rivers of salvation flow And springs of life from Thee, Saved from sin, I live, I know Thy blood hath ransomed me: Now I catch the healing tide Now I taste how good Thou art, Now I feel the blood applied, The pardon to my heart. God, The Omnipresent God

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 1 hymnal Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 God, the omnipresent God, Our strength and refuge stands Ready to support our load, And bear us in His hands: Readiest when we need Him most, When to Him distressed we cry; All who on His mercy trust Shall find deliverance nigh. 2 Kept by Him, we scorn to fear In danger’s blackest day, Starting at destruction near, Though nature faint away, Though the stormy ocean roar, Though the madding billows rise, Rage, and foam, and lash the shore, And mingle earth and skies. 3 Let earth’s inmost center quake, And shattered nature mourn, Let unwieldy mountains shake, And fall by storms uptorn, Fall with all their trembling load Far into the ocean hurled, Lo! We stand secure in God, Amidst a ruined world. 4 From the throne of God there springs A pure and crystal stream, Life, and peace, and joy it brings To His Jerusalem: Rivers of refreshing grace Through the sacred city flow, Watering all the hallowed place Where God resides below. 5 God most merciful, most high, Doth in His Sion dwell, Kept by Him their towers defy The strength of earth and hell; Built on her o’ershadowing Rock, Who shall her foundations move? Who her great defender shock— The Almighty God of love. 6 All that on this Rock are stayed The world assaults in vain, Ever present with His aid He shall His own sustain: Guardian of the chosen race, Jesus doth His church defend, Save them by His timely grace, And keep them to the end. 7 Furiously the heathen raged Against His church below, Kingdoms all their power engaged Jerusalem t’o’erthrow; Earth from her foundation stirred, Yawned to swallow up her prey, Jesus spoke, she owned His word, And quaked, and fled away. 8 For His people in distress The God of Jacob stands, Keeps us, ’till our troubles cease, In His almighty hands: He for us His power hath shown, He doth still our refuge prove; Loves the Lord of hosts His own, And shall forever love. 9 Come, behold the Almighty Lord In robes of vengeance clad; By the desolating sword What havoc hath He made! He hath sent His armies forth, States and kingdoms to o’erthrow, Marched in anger through the earth, And ravaged all below. 10 Lo! Again in tender love He bids their discords cease, Calms their spirit from above, And melts them into peace; Breaks the bow and burns the car, Instruments of fatal ill, Quells the horrid din of war, And bids the world be still. 11 "Sons of men, be still, and know That I am God alone; I my saving power will show, And make my goodness known; All shall with my will comply"; Fear the name to sinners given, Bow before the Lord most high, The Lord of earth and Heav’n. 12 For His people in distress The God of Jacob stands, Bears us, ’till our troubles cease, In His almighty hands: He for us His power hath shown, He doth still our refuge prove, Loves the Lord of hosts His own, And shall forever love. Sinner, Hear The Savior's Call

Author: John Newton Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 58 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 First Line: Sinner, hear the Savior’s call Lyrics: 1 Sinner, hear the Savior’s call, He now is passing by; He has seen thy grievous thrall, And heard thy mournful cry. He has pardons to impart, Grace to save thee from thy fears; See the love that fills His heart, And wipe away thy tears. 2 Why art thou afraid to come And tell Him all thy case? He will not pronounce thy doom, Nor frown thee from His face: Wilt thou fear Emmanuel? Wilt thou dread the Lamb of God, Who, to save thy soul from hell, Has shed His precious blood? 3 Think, how on the cross He hung Pierced with a thousand wounds! Hark, from each as with a tongue The voice of pardon sounds! See, from all His bursting veins, Blood, of wondrous virtue, flow! Shed to wash away thy stains, And ransom thee from woe. 4 Though His majesty be great, His mercy is no less; Though He thy transgressions hate, He feels for thy distress: By Himself the Lord has sworn, He delights not in thy death; But invites thee to return, That thou mayst live by faith. 5 Raise thy downcast eyes, and see What throngs His throne surround! These, though sinners once like thee, Have full salvation found: Yield not then to unbelief! While He says, "There yet is room"; Though of sinners thou art chief, Since Jesus calls thee, come. Jesus Leaves His Throne On High

Author: Benjamin Beddome, 1717-1795 Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 2 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 Jesus leaves His throne on high, To save a ruined race; Lo, He condescends to die, And take the sinner’s place: In deep slumbers see Him borne To the tomb, but soon He wakes; On the third, the glorious morn, Death’s iron bands He breaks. 2 Soldiers at the entry stand, The sacred place to guard; But behold, the time’s at hand, The tomb must be unbarred: Angels roll the stone away, While the watchers’ eyes are sealed, Death reluctant yields his prey, And Jesus stands revealed. 3 Raise, ye saints, your joyful eyes, The victory is yours; Jesus now above the skies, Your endless bliss secures: He the first-fruits from the grave, Gives a pledge of all to come: Trust in Him, whose power to save Shall bring you safely home.
