Psalm 27: The Lord's my light and saving health

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 19 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 27 First Line: The Lord's my light and saving health Lyrics: 1The Lord’s my light and saving health, who shall make me dismay’d? My life’s strength is the Lord, of whom then shall I be afraid? 2When as mine enemies and foes, most wicked persons all, To eat my flesh against me rose, they stumbled and did fall. 3Against me though an host encamp, my heart yet fearless is: Though war against me rise, I will be confident in this. 4One thing I of the Lord desir’d, and will seek to obtain, That all days of my life I may within God’s house remain; That I the beauty of the Lord behold may and admire, And that I in his holy place may rev’rently enquire. 5For he in his pavilion shall me hide in evil days; In secret of his tent me hide, and on a rock me raise. 6And now, ev’n at this present time, mine head shall lifted be Above all those that are my foes, and round encompass me: Therefore unto his tabernacle I’ll sacrifices bring Of joyfulness; I’ll sing, yea, I to God will praises sing. 7O Lord, give ear unto my voice, when I do cry to thee; Upon me also mercy have, and do thou answer me. 8When thou didst say, Seek ye my face, then unto thee reply Thus did my heart, Above all things thy face, Lord, seek will I. 9Far from me hide not thou thy face; put not away from thee Thy servant in thy wrath: thou hast an helper been to me. O God of my salvation, leave me not, nor forsake: 10Though me my parents both should leave, the Lord will me up take. 11O Lord, instruct me in thy way, to me a leader be In a plain path, because of those that hatred bear to me. 12Give me not to mine en’mies’ will; for witnesses that lie Against me risen are, and such as breathe out cruelty. 13I fainted had, unless that I believed had to see The Lord’s own goodness in the land of them that living be. 14Wait on the Lord, and be thou strong, and he shall strength afford Unto thine heart; yea, do thou wait, I say, upon the Lord.

When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me. 2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away. Change and decay in all around I see. O thou who changest not, abide with me. 3 I need thy presence every passing hour. What but thy grace can foil the tempter's power? Who like thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me. 4 I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless, ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if thou abide with me. 5 Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes. Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies. Savior, when, in dust, to thee

Author: Grant Appears in 443 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 27:7 Lyrics: 1 Saviour, when, in dust, to thee Low we bow the adoring knee-- When, repentant, to the skies Scarce we lift our streaming eyes-- Oh, by all thy pain and woe Suffered once for man below, Bending from thy throne on high, Hear us when to thee we cry. 2 By thine hour of ark despair; By thine agony of prayer; By the cross, the nail, the thorn, Piercing spear, and torturing scorn; By the gloom that veiled the skies O'er the dreadful sacrifice-- Jesus, look, with pitying eye; Listen to our humble cry. 3 By thy deep, expiring groan; By the sad, sepulchral stone; By the vault whose dark abode Held in vain the rising God-- Oh, from earth to heaven restored, Mighty, re-ascended Lord, Saviour, Prince, exalted high, Hear us when to thee we cry. Here, O Our Lord, We See You Face to Face

Author: Horatius Bonar Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 315 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 27:8 Lyrics: 1 Here, O our Lord, I see Thee face to face, Here would we touch and handle things unseen, Here grasp with firmer hand eternal grace, And all our weariness upon You lean. 2 We have no help but Yours, nor do we need Another arm save Yours to lean upon. It is enough, my Lord, enough indeed; Our strength is in Your might, Your might alone. 3 This is the hour of banquet and of song; This is the heavenly table for us spread; Here let us feast and, feasting, still prolong The fellowship of living wine and bread. 4 Too soon we rise; the symbols disappear. The feast, though not the love, is past and gone; The bread and wine remove; but You art here, Nearer than ever, still our Shield and Sun. 5 Feast after feast thus comes and passes by; Yet, passing, points to that glad feast above, Giving sweet foretaste of the festal joy, The Lamb’s great bridal feast of bliss and love.

Whom should I fear, since God to me

Appears in 9 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 27 Lyrics: 1 Whom should I fear, since God to me is saving Health and Light? Since strongly he my Life supports, what can my Soul affright? 2 With fierce Intent my Flesh to tear, when Foes beset me round, They stumbled, and their haughty Crests were made to strike the Ground. 3 Thro' him, my Heart, undaunted, dares with num'rous Hosts to cope; Thro' him in doubtful Streights of War for good Success I hope. 4 Henceforth within his house to dwell I earnestly desire; His wond'rous Beauty there to view, and His blest Will inquire. 5 For there may I with comfort rest, in Times of deep distress; And safe as on a Rock abide in that secure Recess: 6 Whilst God o'er all my haughty Foes my lofty Head shall raise; And I my joyful Off'ring bring, and sing glad Songs of Praise. Part II 7 Continue, Lord, to hear my Voice, whene'er to Thee I cry; In Mercy all my Pray'rs receive, nor my Request deny. 8 When us to seek thy glorious Face Thou kindly dost advise; "Thy glorious Face I'll always seek," my grateful Heart replies. 9 Then hide not Thou thy Face, O Lord, nor me in Wrath reject: My God and Saviour, leave not him thou didst so oft protect. 10 Tho' all my Friends, and nearest Kin, their helpless Charge forsake; Yet Thou, whose Love excels them all, wilt Care and Pity take. 11 Instruct me in thy Paths, O Lord; my Ways directly guide; Lest envious Men, who watch my Steps, should see me tread aside. 12 Lord, disappoint my cruel Foes; defeat their ill Desire, Whose lying Lips, and bloody Hands, against my Peace conspire. 13 I trusted that my future Life should with thy Love be crown'd; Or else my fainting soul had sunk, with Sorrow compass'd round. 14 God's Time with patient Faith expect, and He'll inspire thy Breast With inward Strength: Do thou thy Part, and leave to Him the rest.

The Confidence of Faith

Appears in 9 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 27 First Line: The Lord Almighty is my light Lyrics: 1 The Lord Almighty is my light, He is my Saviour ever near, And, since my strength is in His might Who can distress me or affright? What evil shall I fear? 2 O Lord, regard me when I cry, In mercy hear me when I speak; Thou bidst me seek Thy face, and I, O Lord, with willing heart reply, Thy face, Lord, will I seek. 3 Hide not Thy face afar from me, For Thou a lone canst help afford; O cast me not away from Thee Nor let my soul forsaken be, My Saviour and my Lord. 4 Though earthly friends no pity take, Yet Thy compassion knows no end; E'en tho' my father shall forsake, E'en tho' my mother's love shall break, The Lord will be my friend. 5 My heart had failed in fear and woe Unless in God I had believed, Assured that He would mercy show And that my life His grace should know, Nor was my hope deceived. 6 Fear not, though succor be delayed, Still wait for God, and He will hear; Be strong, nor be thy heart dismayed, Wait, and the Lord shall bring thee aid, Yea, trust and never fear.
