Alleluia, alleluia! 2 You were their rock, their fortress, and their might; you, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight, and in the darkness drear, their one true light. Alleluia, alleluia! 3 May all your soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, and win with them the victor's crown of gold. Alleluia, alleluia! 4 O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one within your great design. Alleluia, alleluia! 5 And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, far off we hear the distant triumph song; and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, alleluia! 6 But then there breaks a yet more glorious day: the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia, alleluia! 7 From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost: Alleluia, alleluia! Rev. 7:13-17: How bright these glorious spirits shine!

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 156 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 7:13-17 First Line: How bright these glorious spirits shine! Lyrics: How bright these glorious spirits shine! whence all their white array? How came they to the blissful seats of everlasting day? Lo! these are they from suff’rings great, who came to realms of light, And in the blood of Christ have washed those robes which shine so bright. Now, with triumphal palms, they stand before the throne on high, And serve the God they love, amidst the glories of the sky. His presence fills each heart with joy, tunes ev’ry mouth to sing: By day, by night, the sacred courts with glad hosannahs ring. 150 Hunger and thirst are felt no more, nor suns with scorching ray; God is their sun, whose cheering beams diffuse eternal day. The Lamb which dwells amidst the throne shall o’er them still preside; Feed them with nourishment divine, and all their footsteps guide. ’Mong pastures green he’ll lead his flock, where living streams appear; And God the Lord from ev’ry eye shall wipe off ev’ry tear.

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

Author: Charles Wesley, 1707-88 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,863 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 7:9-17 Lyrics: 1 Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heav'n, to earth come down! Fix in us Thy humble dwelling, All Thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, Thou art all compassion, Pure, unbounded love Thou art; Visit us with Thy salvation, Enter ev'ry trembling heart. 2 Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit Into ev'ry troubled breast; Let us all in Thee inherit; Let us find Thy promised rest. Take away the love of sinning; Alpha and Omega be; End of faith, as its beginning, Set our hearts at liberty. 3 Come, Almighty, to deliver; Let us all Thy life receive; Suddenly return, and never, Nevermore Thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, Serve Thee as Thy hosts above, Pray and praise Thee without ceasing, Glory in Thy perfect love. 4 Finish then Thy new creation, Pure and spotless let us be; Let us see Thy great salvation Perfectly restored in Thee, Changed from glory into glory, Till in heav'n we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before Thee, Lost in wonder, love, and praise! Author: Heinrich T. Schenk; Frances Elizabeth Cox Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7 Appears in 145 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 7:9 Lyrics: 1 Who are these like stars appearing, these before God's throne who stand? Each a golden crown is wearing; who are all this glorious band? Alleluia! Hark, they sing, praising loud their heav'nly King. 2 Who are these of dazzling brightness, these in God's own truth arrayed, clad in robes of purest whiteness, robes whose lustre ne'er shall fade, ne'er be touched by time's rude hand? Whence come all this glorious band? 3 These are they who have contended for their Savior's honor long, wrestling on till life was ended, foll'wing not the sinful throng; these, who well the fight sustained, triumph through the Lamb have gained. 4 These are they whose hearts were riven, sore with woe and anguish tried, who in prayer full oft have striven with the God they glorified; now, their painful conflict o'er, God has bid them weep no more. 5 These like priests have watched and waited, off'ring up to Christ their will; soul and body consecrated, day and night to serve him still: now in God's most holy place blest they stand before his face. Borthwick, 1813-97 Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Appears in 178 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 7:13-17 First Line: Be still, my soul; the Lord is on your side Lyrics: 1 Be still, my soul; the Lord is on your side; Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain; Leave to your God to order and provide; In ev'ry change He faithful will remain. Be still, my soul; your best, your heav'nly Friend Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end. 2 Be still, my soul; your God will undertake To guide the future as He has the past. Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake; All now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below. 3 Be still, my soul, though dearest friends depart And all is darkened in the vale of tears; Then you will better know His love, His heart, Who comes to soothe your sorrows and your fears. Be still, my soul; your Jesus can repay From His own fulness all He takes away. 4 Be still, my soul; the hour is hast'ning on When we shall be forever with the Lord, When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored. Be still, my soul; when change and tears are past, All safe and blessed we shall meet at last. Used With Tune: FINLANDIA

Hymn 41

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 87 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 7:13 First Line: These glorious minds, how bright they shine! Lyrics: "These glorious minds, how bright they shine! Whence all their white array? How came they to the happy seats Of everlasting day?" From torturing pains to endless joys On fiery wheels they rode, And strangely washed their raiment white In Jesus' dying blood. Now they approach a spotless God, And bow before his throne Their warbling harps and sacred songs Adore the Holy One. The unveiled glories of his face Amongst his saints reside, While the rich treasure of his grace Sees all their wants supplied. Tormenting thirst shall leave their souls, And hunger flee as fast; The fruit of life's immortal tree Shall be their sweet repast. The Lamb shall lead his heav'nly flock Where living fountains rise; And love divine shall wipe away The sorrows of their eyes.

The Church's One Foundation

Author: Samuel J. Stone Appears in 859 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 7:14 Lyrics: 1 The Church’s one foundation Is Jesus Christ her Lord; She is His new creation By water and the word; From heav'n He came and sought her To be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her And for her life He died. 2 Elect from every nation, Yet one o’er all the earth, Her charter of salvation One Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy name she blesses, Partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, With every grace endued. 3 Though with a scornful wonder Men see her sore oppressed, By schisms rent asunder, By heresies distressed; Yet saints their watch are keeping, Their cry goes up, “How long?” And soon the night of weeping Shall be the morn of song. 4 'Mid toil and tribulation, And tumult of her war, She waits the consummation Of peace forevermore; Till with the vision glorious Her longing eyes are blest, And the great Church victorious Shall be the Church at rest. 5 Yet she on earth hath union With God, the Three in One, And mystic sweet communion With those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, Like them, the meek and lowly, On high may dwell with Thee. Amen. Holy God, We Praise Thy Name

Author: Clarence A. Walworth, 1820-1900 Meter: 7.8.7.8.7.7 Appears in 203 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 7:9-14 Lyrics: 1 Holy God, we praise Thy name; Lord of all, we bow before Thee. All on earth Thy scepter claim, All in heav'n above adore Thee. Infinite Thy vast domain, Everlasting is Thy reign. 2 Hark! the glad celestial hymn Angel choirs above are raising; Cherubim and seraphim, In unceasing chorus praising, Fill the heav'ns with sweet accord: Holy, holy, holy Lord! 3 Lo, th'apostles' holy train Join Thy sacred name to hallow; Prophets swell the glad refrain, And the white-robed martyrs follow, And from morn to set of sun Through the Church the song goes on. 4 Thou art King of glory, Christ; Son of God, yet born of Mary. For us sinners sacrificed, As to death a Tributary, First to break the bars of death, Thou hast opened heav'n to faith. 5 Holy Father, holy Son, Holy Spirit, three we name Thee; Though in essence only one, Undivided God we claim Thee And, adoring, bend the knee While we own the mystery. God, We Praise You!

Author: Christopher Idle, 1938- Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 30 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 7:11-17 First Line: God, we praise you! God we bless you! Lyrics: 1 God, we praise you! God, we bless you! God, we name you sovereign Lord! Mighty King whom angels worship, Father, by your church adored: all creation shows your glory, heaven and earth draw near your throne singing "Holy, holy, holy, Lord of hosts, and God alone!" 2 True apostles, faithful prophets, saints who set their world ablaze, martyrs, once unknown, unheeded, join one growing song of praise, while your church on earth confesses one majestic Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, God, our hope eternally. 3 Jesus Christ, the King of glory, everlasting Son of God, humble was your virgin mother, hard the lonely path you trod. By your cross is sin defeated, hell confronted face to face, heaven opened to believers, sinners justified by grace. 4 Christ, at God's right hand victorious, you will judge the world you made; Lord, in mercy help your servants for whose freedom you have paid. Raise us up from dust to glory, guard us from all sin today; King enthroned above all praises, save your people, God, we pray.
