Betty Pulkingham

1928 - 2019 Person Name: Betty Carr Pulkingham Composer (descant) of "GLORIFY THY NAME" in Songs for Life Betty Carr Pulkingham was born in 1928 in Burlington, North Carolina. She received a B.S. in Music in 1949 from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro and she did graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music. She was Instructor of Music Theory at the University of Texas. In 1951, she married a seminarian Graham Pulkingham. They ministered together in various places in the U.S., England and Scotland; they were founding members of the Community of Celebration, an Anglican religious order. She travelled widely with "The Fisherfolk," an outreach music ministry connected with the Community of Celebration. Betty Pulkingham was a well known composer and arranger. She co-edited and published a number of songbooks and books on worship; and served on the Episcopal Church's Standing Commission on Church Music from 1988-1994. She and her husband returned to Burlington and then she later moved to Austin, Texas to live with family. She died in Austin, May 9, 2019 at the age of 90. Dale Grotenhuis

1931 - 2012 Harmonizer of "GLORIFY THY NAME" in Songs for Life Dale Grotenhuis (b. Cedar Grove, WI, 1931; d. Jenison, Mi, August 17, 2012) was a member of the 1987 Psalter Hymnal 1987 Revision Committee, and was professor of music and director of choral music at Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa, from 1960 until he retired in 1994 to concentrate on composition. Educated at Calvin College; Michigan State University, Lansing; and Ohio State University, Columbus; he combined teaching with composition throughout his career and was a widely published composer of choral music. He also directed the Dordt choir in a large number of recordings, including many psalm arrangements found in the 1959 edition of the Psalter Hymnal. Before coming to Dordt, Grotenhuis taught music at Christian high schools in Washington and Michigan. Under his direction, the Dordt College concert choir participated in annual tours that took members throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He loved the church and the music of the church. Donna Adkins

b. 1940 Author of "Glorify Thy Name" in Celebrating Grace Hymnal Donna Whobrey Adkins USA 1940-present. Born at Louisville, KY, she began singing in public at age two. Her family sang as a traveling quartet, and by age 12 she played piano with it. She attended Asbury College, Wilmore, KY, (1959-1960) and the U of Louisville, KY, in 1961. In 1959 she married James Adkins, who served as pastor of Administration at Covenant Church, Pittsburgh, PA. They had four children: Mark, Karen, Kristen, and Jessica. She served for some years on the office and music staff there, while her husband served as pastor and chaplain. Later, they moved to Greensburg, PA. She presently resides with her husband at Brunswick, GA, having been married 60+ years. John Perry
