Preach the Word

Author: Charles P. Jones Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: Preach the word, the holy word Lyrics: 1 Preach the word, the holy word, Lade with meat the heav'nly board, Stewards of the store of God, Sound the saving truth abroad. You are sent the world to draw To the Saviour and His law, Praying them to leave sin's road And be reconciled to God. 2 Preach the word, O ministry, Let the earth salvation see, Preach it, woman, child and man Where you may and where you can, Let no sluggish spirit bind, Let not earth absorb your mind, Keep salvation on your tongue, Roll the Saviour's praise along. 3 Preach the word,'twill faith produce, Turn the struggling captive loose, Heal his pain and give him sight, Turn his darkness into light, Cheer his soul on heav'n's way, Keep him watchful day by day, Cause him happy here to be, Save him for eternity. Hear the Call

Author: Charles P. Jones Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: Hear the call, O sons of men Lyrics: 1 Hear the call, O sons of men, Made from heav'n, so clear and plain, Come ye now to Jesus feet, While He's on the mercy seat. Sinners, they who sin must die, Die to all eternity; Yet, has Jesus died for all, Who today for mercy call. 2 Let not pride your hearts deceive, Only they who turn may live, Only they who humbly bow, And a true repentance show. God doth make the message plain, Sinners must be born again, Take the cross and follow Christ, By the scoffing world despised. 3 Scorn ye not the message true, Now repent and good works do, Follow Christ the light of men, Christ, Who for your sins was slain. O behold the Lamb of God, Hear His voice and trust His blood, In Him even now be blest, And enjoy eternal rest. Topics: Soul Winning Scripture: Romans 6:22-23 Used With Tune: GAINES

Charles Price Jones

1865 - 1949 Composer of "GAINES (Jones)" Charles Price Jones born December 9, 1865, near Rome, Georgia. He grew up in Kingston, Georgia, and attended the Baptist church. He was converted in 1884 while living in Cat Island, Arkansas. In 1885 he was called to the ministry and began preaching. In 1888 he attended Arkansas Baptist College and taught school in Grant County, Arkansas. He preached and pastored several Baptist churches. After asking God for a deeper experience of grace and fasting and praying for three days, Jones experienced a closeness with God, and in 1895, along with other Baptist holiness adherents, who taught that a second work of grace can cleanse the Christian of original sin. They started a holiness movement in the Baptist church, and he began teaching holiness in his congregation, Mount Helm Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi. He faced much opposition from some members of his congregation and other Baptist churches. Eventually the church voted to remove "Baptist" and change it to "Church of Christ." For several years, Jones led a non-denominational holiness movement. In 1899 he began to write songs for his church. Most of his hymns were inspired by a scripture passage. The congregation built the Christ Temple campus which included a 1000 seat sanctuary, a printing press, a school building, and a girl's dormitory. In 1917, Jones organized Christ Temple Church in Los Angeles and moved the printing press there. He died January 19, 1949 in Los Angeles Dianne Shapiro, from Church of Christ (Holiness) U.S.A. website and "Charles Price Jones (1865-1949) Religious Leader" by David Daniels, Mississippi Encyclopedia website (both accessed 10/9/2020)
