Person Name: Unknown Author of "Farther Along" in Timeless Truths In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

J. R. Baxter

1887 - 1960 Person Name: J. R. Baxter, Jr. Composer of "FARTHER ALONG" in Great Songs of the Church Jesse Randall (Pap) Baxter, Jr. (1887-1960) Born: December 8, 1887, Lebanon, Alabama. Died: January 21, 1960. Baxter grew up in DeKalb County, Alabama. In 1926, he bought part of Virgil Stamps’ Gospel music firm, which became the Stamps-Baxter Music and Printing Company, one of the most successful Gospel music publishers of the early 20th Century. Baxter ran the company’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, office until Stamps’ death in 1940, then moved to Dallas, Texas, to run the main office. After Baxter’s death, his wife, Clarice, ran the business until she died; it was then sold to Zondervan. Baxter was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 1997. W. B. Stevens

b. 1862 Author of "Temped and Tried" in Great Songs of the Church William Buel Stevens was born in 1862 in the Lawnridge community of Scotland County Missouri. His father, Buel Stevens was arrested along with a group of 80 “German Methodist," charged with mutiny in 1862. Buel was one of three soldiers made examples of and sent to the federal prison in Alton, IL; but all three were returned to service after appeals after 6 months in prison. William's uncle died suddenly of heart disease at 48 and his 17 year old son died the same way a couple of years later. This would have happened in Stevens’ late teens. William Buel Stevens and his wife became sanctified and joined the Church of God Holiness. They spent a few years as traveling tent evangelists. They established two church communities. One in Queen City Missouri and 1 in Moulton Iowa. He was a minister of the gospel until death, dying a year after his wife in the early 1940s. All of their babies died before them, some as small children, one Waldo at 19, and a daughter who may have lived a little longer. This may have shaped the feelings expressed in this song. R. E. Winsett

1876 - 1952 Composer of "[Tempted and tried we're oft made to wander]" in Radiant Joy Robert Emmett Winsett (January 15, 1876 — June 26, 1952 (aged 76) was an American composer and publisher of Gospel music. Winsett was born in Bledsoe County, Tennessee, and graduated from the Bowman Normal School of Music in 1899. He founded his own publishing company in 1903, and his first publication, Winsett's Favorite Songs, quickly became popular among the Baptist and Pentecostal churches of the American South. Pentecostal Power followed in 1907; that year Winsett completed postgraduate work at a conservatory. He married Birdie Harris in 1908, and had three sons and two daughters with her. He settled in Fort Smith, Arkansas, continuing to compose gospel songs, of which he would write over 1,000 in total. He became a minister in 1923, and was affiliated with the Church of God (Seventh Day). Birdie Harris died late in the 1920s, and shortly thereafter Winsett moved back to Tennessee. He founded a new company in Chattanooga, and published more shape note music books. He remarried, to Mary Ruth Edmonton, in 1930, and had three further children. Winsett's final publication, Best of All (1951), sold over 1 million copies, and in total his books sold over ten million copies. His song "Jesus Is Coming Soon" won a Dove Award for Gospel Song of the Year at the 1969 awards. He has been inducted into the Southern Gospel Museum and Hall of Fame. --www.wikipedia.org

1864 - 1948 Person Name: George Harrison Cook Composer of "GRENADA" in The Cyber Hymnal Rv George Harrison Cook USA 1864-1948. Not much is known about him. Converted at age 14, Cook was a preacher, singer, composer and involved with church music. He wrote the tune “Sunlight” and asked his friend, Harry Zelley, to write words for it, which he did, in 1899. He died in Ocean Grove, NJ. John Perry
