My Lord, My Master, at Thy Feet Adoring

Author: Jacques Bridaine, 1701-1767; Thomas B. Pollock Meter: 11.10.11.10 Appears in 34 hymnals Lyrics: 1. My Lord, my Master, at Thy feet adoring, I see Thee bowed beneath Thy load of woe; For me, a sinner, is Thy life blood pouring; For Thee, my Savior, scarce my tears will flow. 2. Thine own disciple to the Jews has sold Thee, With friendship’s kiss and loyal word he came; How oft of faithful love my lips have told Thee, While Thou hast seen my falsehood and my shame. 3. With taunts and scoffs they mock what seems Thy weakness, With blows and outrage adding pain to pain; Thou art unmoved and steadfast in Thy meekness; When I am wronged how quickly I complain! 4. My Lord, my Savior, when I see Thee wearing Upon Thy bleeding brow the crown of thorn, Shall I for pleasure live, or shrink from bearing Whate’er my lot may be of pain or scorn? 5. O Victim of Thy love, O pangs most healing, O saving death, O wounds that I adore, O shame most glorious! Christ, before Thee kneeling, I pray Thee keep me Thine for evermore. John Bacchus Dykes

1823 - 1876 Person Name: John B. Dykes Composer of "STRENGTH AND STAY" in The Hymnal As a young child John Bacchus Dykes (b. Kingston-upon-Hull' England, 1823; d. Ticehurst, Sussex, England, 1876) took violin and piano lessons. At the age of ten he became the organist of St. John's in Hull, where his grandfather was vicar. After receiving a classics degree from St. Catherine College, Cambridge, England, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1847. In 1849 he became the precentor and choir director at Durham Cathedral, where he introduced reforms in the choir by insisting on consistent attendance, increasing rehearsals, and initiating music festivals. He served the parish of St. Oswald in Durham from 1862 until the year of his death. To the chagrin of his bishop, Dykes favored the high church practices associated with the Oxford Movement (choir robes, incense, and the like). A number of his three hundred hymn tunes are still respected as durable examples of Victorian hymnody. Most of his tunes were first published in Chope's Congregational Hymn and Tune Book (1857) and in early editions of the famous British hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Bert Polman

Louis Bourgeois

1510 - 1561 Person Name: Louis Bourgeois, c1510-c1561 Composer of "GENEVAN PSALM 12" in CPWI Hymnal Louis Bourgeois (b. Paris, France, c. 1510; d. Paris, 1561). In both his early and later years Bourgeois wrote French songs to entertain the rich, but in the history of church music he is known especially for his contribution to the Genevan Psalter. Apparently moving to Geneva in 1541, the same year John Calvin returned to Geneva from Strasbourg, Bourgeois served as cantor and master of the choristers at both St. Pierre and St. Gervais, which is to say he was music director there under the pastoral leadership of Calvin. Bourgeois used the choristers to teach the new psalm tunes to the congregation. The extent of Bourgeois's involvement in the Genevan Psalter is a matter of scholarly debate. Calvin had published several partial psalters, including one in Strasbourg in 1539 and another in Geneva in 1542, with melodies by unknown composers. In 1551 another French psalter appeared in Geneva, Eighty-three Psalms of David, with texts by Marot and de Beze, and with most of the melodies by Bourgeois, who supplied thirty four original tunes and thirty-six revisions of older tunes. This edition was republished repeatedly, and later Bourgeois's tunes were incorporated into the complete Genevan Psalter (1562). However, his revision of some older tunes was not uniformly appreciated by those who were familiar with the original versions; he was actually imprisoned overnight for some of his musical arrangements but freed after Calvin's intervention. In addition to his contribution to the 1551 Psalter, Bourgeois produced a four-part harmonization of fifty psalms, published in Lyons (1547, enlarged 1554), and wrote a textbook on singing and sight-reading, La Droit Chemin de Musique (1550). He left Geneva in 1552 and lived in Lyons and Paris for the remainder of his life. Bert Polman
