Jane Marshall

1924 - 2019 Person Name: Jane Marshall, b. 1924 Arranger of "CHEREPONI" in With One Voice Jane Marshall, was born Jane Anne Manton in Dallas in 1924. She became a pianist and organist and composed music as a teenager. She earned a music degree in 1945 from SMU. She married Elbert Marshall. She went on to write more than 200 hymns and other sacred music works. She later earned a Masters degree in 1968 from SMU in choral conducting and composition. She taught at SMU's Perkins School of Theology and tis Church Music Summer School from 1975-2010. She attended Northaven United Methodist Church in Dallas for many years, collaborated often with other hymn writers, and encouraged many students. Tom Colvin

1925 - 2000 Author of "Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us with Your Love" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) Tom Colvin (b. 1925; d. 2000) was trained as an engineer and worked in that profession in Burma and Singa­pore from 1945 to 1948. After studying theology at Trinity College, Glasgow University, he was ordained in the Church of Scotland in 1954. He served as missionary in Nyasa­land (now Malawi) from 1954 to 1958, in Ghana from 1958 to 1964, and again in Nyasa­land from 1964 to 1974. His work there included preaching, education, and community development. After completing his missionary work, Colvin became a minister in the United Reformed Church of England and served an inner-city church in London. He returned to Africa in 1984 as a development consultant to the Zimbabwe Christian Council. Colvin's writings include Christ's Work in Free Africa (1964) and three collections of hymns, many written in collaboration with African Christians–Free to Serve (1966), Leap My Soul (1976), and Fill Us with Your Love (1983). Lawrence Bartlett

1933 - 2002 Person Name: L. F. B. Arranger of "CHEREPONI" in Together in Song Lawrence Bartlett was born in Sydney on the February 13, 1933. He studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music between 1950 and 1957, and at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in 1960. He also studied organ, piano, singing and composition. He was the Assistant Director of Music at the King's School, Parramatta, a tutor in church music at Ridley College in Melbourne and in 1965 he was acting cathedral organist and master of the choristers at St Andrew's Cathedral in Sydney. Bartlett was an Anglican clergyman and wrote many compositions suitable for church performance. Bartlett was also a member of the Australian Hymn Book committee, and has been involved in the initiation of schemes for promoting the composition and performance of new liturgical music. Robert N. Roth

b. 1928 Person Name: Robert Roth Arranger of "CHEREPONI" in Songs for Life Robert N. Roth was born on June 28, 1928 in Somerset, PA and was educated at Franklin and Marshall College (BA, Phi Beta Kappa), the University of Virginia (MA – Raven Society) and the School of Sacred Music of the Union Theological Seminary in New York City (MSM). He served churches in Charlottesville, VA and Mamaroneck, NY before accepting concurrent positions as organist and choirmaster at the Church of St. James the Less in Scarsdale, NY and the Free Synagogue of Westchester in Mount Vernon, NY. He has held memberships in the American Guild of Organists, the Association of Anglican Musicians, and the St. Wilfrid Club in New York City. He is represented in The Hymnal 1982 of the Episcopal Church by his tune WEST PARK, and in Chatter with the Angels by his tune ORR. With his wife Nancy he edited a children’s version of The Hymnal 1982 titled We Sing of God. He also compiled and edited Wond’rous Machine: a Literary Anthology Celebrating the Organ. He has published many articles on church music in various periodicals and numerous arrangements and original compositions for choral groups. He now lives in Oberlin, OH. Mary Louise VanDyke
