1806 - 1855 Person Name: C. Balle Composer of "[If thou but knew the life that thou are leading]" in Hymnal for Church and Home Carl Christian Nicolaj Balle was born in Copenhagen on December 25, 1806. He was a Danish composer and editor of church music and served as a pastor in Vesterbølle and Nebsager. He is noted for his Christmas compositions, including the hymn tune "Det kimer nu til julefest". He died on March 3, 1885 in Nebsager, Bjerre, Vejle, Denmark.

1881 - 1948 Translator of "If Thou But Knew The Life" Paul Christian Paulsen was born on March 26, 1881, in Alstrup, Jutland, Denmark.
He emigrated to America in 1904, was ordained in 1911, and served as a Lutheran pastor in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, California, and Alberta, Canada.
He died on July 26, 1948.
