Father, Son, and Holy Ghost

Hymnal: The Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion (New ed. thoroughly rev. and much enl.) #274 (1854) Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Lyrics: 1. Father, Son and Holy Ghost, One in Three and Three in One, As by the celestial host, Let thy will on earth be done; Praise by all to thee be given, Gracious Lord of earth and heaven. 2. Vilest of the sinful race, Lo! I answer to thy call; Meanest vessel of thy grace, Grace divinely free for all; Lo! I come to do thy will, All thy counsel to fulfil. 3. If so poor a worm as I My to thy great glory live, All my actions sanctify, All my words and thoughts receive; Claim me for thy service, claim All I have, and all I am. 4. Take my soul and body's powers; Take my memory, mind and will; All my goods, and all my hours; All I know, and all I feel; All I think, or speak, or do; Take my heart, but make it new. 5. Now, O my God, thine own I am; Now I give thee back thine own; Freedom, friends and health and fame, Consecrate to thee alone: Thine I live, thrice happy I! Happier still if thine I die. 6. Father, Son and Holy Ghost, One in Three and Three in One, As by the celestial host, Let thy will on earth be done; Praise by all to thee be given, Glorious Lord of earth and heaven. Richard Redhead

1820 - 1901 Person Name: R. Redhead Composer of "PETRA" in Hymns of Consecration and Faith Richard Redhead (b. Harrow, Middlesex, England, 1820; d. Hellingley, Sussex, England, 1901) was a chorister at Magdalen College, Oxford. At age nineteen he was invited to become organist at Margaret Chapel (later All Saints Church), London. Greatly influencing the musical tradition of the church, he remained in that position for twenty-five years as organist and an excellent trainer of the boys' choirs. Redhead and the church's rector, Frederick Oakeley, were strongly committed to the Oxford Movement, which favored the introduction of Roman elements into Anglican worship. Together they produced the first Anglican plainsong psalter, Laudes Diurnae (1843). Redhead spent the latter part of his career as organist at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Paddington (1864-1894). Conrad Kocher

1786 - 1872 Composer of "DIX" in Hymn and Tune Book of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (Round Note Ed.) Trained as a teacher, Conrad Kocher (b. Ditzingen, Wurttemberg, Germany, 1786; d. Stuttgart, Germany, 1872) moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, to work as a tutor at the age of seventeen. But his love for the music of Haydn and Mozart impelled him to a career in music. He moved back to Germany in 1811, settled in Stuttgart, and remained there for most of his life. The prestigious Cotta music firm published some of his early compositions and sent him to study music in Italy, where he came under the influence of Palestrina's music. In 1821 Kocher founded the School for Sacred Song in Stuttgart, which popularized four-part singing in the churches of that region. He was organist and choir director at the Stiftskirche in Stuttgart from 1827 to 1865. Kocher wrote a treatise on church music, Die Tonkunst in der Kirche (1823), collected a large number of chorales in Zions Harfe (1855), and composed an oratorio, two operas, and some sonatas. William H. Monk created the current form of DIX by revising and shortening Conrad Kocher's chorale melody for “Treuer Heiland, wir sind hier,” found in Kocher's Stimmen aus dem Reiche Gottes (1838). Felice Giardini

1716 - 1796 Person Name: Felice de Giardini, 1716-1796 Composer of "TURIN" in Evangelical Lutheran hymnal Felice Giardini, born in Italy. When young, he studied singing, harpsichord, and violin. He became a composer and violin virtuoso. By age 12 he was playing in theatre orchestras. His most instructive lesson: While playing a solo passage during an opera, he decided to show off his skills by improvising several bravura variations that the composer, Jommelli, had not written . Although the audience applauded loudly, Jomelli, who happened to be there, went up and slapped Giardini in the face. He learned a lesson from that. He toured Europe as a violinist, considered one of the greatest musical artists of his time. He served as orchestra leader and director of the Italian Opera in London, giving concerts. He tried to run a theatre in Naples, but encountered adversity. He went to Russia, but had little fortune there, where he died. John Perry
