Harriet Reynolds Krauth Spaeth

1845 - 1925 Person Name: H. R. K. Spaeth, 1845-1925 Meter: 11.5.12.9 Translator of "Ye Lands, to the Lord" in Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary Harriet Reynolds Krauth Spaeth [Harriet Krauth], 1845-1925 Born: September 21, 1845, Baltimore, Maryland. Died: May 5, 1925, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Buried: Mount Vernon Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Daughter of hymn translator Charles Krauth, Harriet attended the Girls’ School in Philadelphia, and lived independently as a writer. In 1880, she married Adolph Spaeth, pastor of St. Johannis Church in Philadelphia (and later president of the General Council of the Lutheran Church in America). She sang contralto, played the piano and organ, and for many years was the organist at St. Stephen’s Church in west Philadelphia. She provided hymn translations for The Church Book (1868), The Sunday School Hymnal (1901), and was responsible for the music edition of The Church Book (1872). Many of her essays were published in The Lutheran. When American Lutherans adopted the Common Service in 1888, she prepared an edition with notes for chanting the service. She worked zealously for the founding of the Krauth Memorial Library at the seminary in Philadelphia, and was active in the work of the Mary J. Drexel Home, the Lankenau Hospital, and the Lutheran Orphans’ Home in Germantown, Pennsylvania. V. Koren

1826 - 1910 Person Name: U. V. Koren, 1826-1910 Meter: 11.5.12.9 Author of "Ye Lands, to the Lord" in Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary Born: December 22, 1826, Bergen, Norway. Died: December 19, 1910, Decorah, Iowa. Buried: Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, Decorah, Iowa. Koren has been called the "patriarch of Norwegian-American Lutherans." He graduated from the University of Christiana in 1852; helped found Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota; and received a doctorate of divinity from Concordia Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1903. He served as pastor of the Washington Prairie congregation in Iowa, and president of the Norwegian Synod (1894-1910). E. C. Hoff

1832 - 1894 Person Name: E. C. Hoff, 1832-94 Meter: 11.5.12.9 Composer of "GUDS MENIGHED, SYNG" in Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary Born: January 21, 1832, Bergen, Norway. Died: December 8, 1894. A graduate of the Stord seminary, Hoff sang in the Korskirken choir in Bergen, and studied organ and music theory in Vogel. In 1860, he moved to Halmestrand, where he taught two years before taking another teaching post in Oslo. He conducted several choirs in Oslo, and became organist at the Garisonkirke in 1864. King Oscar frequently went to the Garisonkirke to hear Hoff play, and encouraged him to produce a chorale book.
