Died: 1955, Mex­i­co Ci­ty, Mex­i­co. Mendoza stu­died in­i­tial­ly un­der Don Au­re­lio Or­te­ga. At age of 11 he went to work in a Pro­test­ant print shop in Mex­i­co Ci­ty and helped pro­duce El Evan­gel­is­ta Mex­i­ca­no (The Mex­i­can Evan­gel­ist) for the Meth­od­ist Church of the South; he rose to be­come its di­rect­or for 17 years. Look­ing to im­prove him­self, Men­do­za en­tered a night school for work­ers, but lat­er feel­ing the call to preach the Gos­pel, he en­tered the Pres­by­ter­i­an Sem­in­a­ry in Mex­i­co Ci­ty. When the sem­in­a­ry closed temp­o­rar­i­ly, Men­do­za en­tered the Meth­od­ist In­sti­tute of Pueb­la, where he fin­ished the course in the­ol­o­gy. In 1898 he be­came a mem­ber of the An­nu­al Con­fer­ence of the Mex­i­can Meth­od­ist Church. From 1915 to 1917, he be­longed to the South­ern Meth­od­ist Con­fer­ence of Cal­i­for­nia. 1862 - 1929 Person Name: Lelia N. Morris Author of "Nearer, Still Nearer" in The Celebration Hymnal Lelia (Mrs. C.H.) Morris (1862-1929) was born in Pennsville, Morgan County, Ohio. When her family moved to Malta on the Muskingum River she and her sister and mother had a millinery shop in McConnelsville. She and her husband Charles H. Morris were active in the Methodist Episcopal Church and at the camp meetings in Sebring and Mt. Vernon. She wrote hymns as she did her housework. Although she became blind at age 52 she continued to write hymns on a 28-foot long blackboard that her family had built for her. She is said to have written 1000 texts and many tunes including "Sweeter as the years go by." Mary Louise VanDyke

Person Name: Anónimo Vers. esp. of "Cerca, más cerca" in Himnario Adventista del Séptimo Día In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Ralph Manuel

b. 1951 Harmonizer of "MORRIS" in Hinário para o Culto Cristão Rev. Ralph Manuel, Minister of Music Fresh from the tropical climes of Brazil, Ralph Manuel took on the mantle as HBC's Minister of Music in February 2004. Ralph and his family have quickly become an important part of the church family, reaching out to members and visitors with a message in music. A native of Oklahoma City, Ralph has also lived in Fort Worth, Texas; Walnut Ridge, Arkansas and Recife, Brazil. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Oklahoma City University and a Masters of Church Music from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. For 24 years, Ralph and his wife Donna served as missionaries to Brazil. Ralph taught at North Brazil Baptist Theological Seminary and worked at the Imperial Baptist Church of Recife. In this capacity, he assisted churches in their music ministry and led musical groups that went into the community to share the message of the gospel. Ralph is an accomplished pianist and a published composer and arranger of sacred choral, vocal and keyboard music. His compositions are used in churches around the world, including the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. He was awarded the Arthur Lakschevitz prize from the Association of Baptist Musicians of Brazil for outstanding contribution to church music among Brazilian Baptists. In 2002, he was chosen to write the commissioned anthem for the Baptist Church Music Conference in Memphis. Ralph and Donna have two teenagers-James and Melissa. Ralph's hobbies include playing the piano and collecting old hymnals. His favorite hymns are "Blessed Assurance" because of its exuberant nature and "Redeemed" because of its solid affirmation of a joyful faith. His favorite Bible passage is Psalm 103, particularly the middle verses which express the Lord's continuing love for us despite our unworthiness. --www.heritagebaptistonline

Come to United States in 1855, settled in Wisconsin. Licensed in 1861, ordained elder 1866, presiding elder 1871, bishop 1891. Editor of various Evangelical German-language publications, including Das Evangelische Magazin and Christliche Kinderfreund. Editor of German weekly of the Evangelical Association, 1883, Christliche Botschafter. Editor of Evangelisches Gesangbuch, 1877, for which he supplied a number of hymns. His most famous hymn was "Pure and free from all corruption." He wrote 24 hymns in all, and has been called one of the greatest of the German writers in America. Translated many English hymns into German. Retired as bishop in 1915. --Robert S. Wilson, DNAH Archives --Ellen Jane Lorenz, DNAH Archives William Horn was born in Germany May 1, 1839. He died in 1917. He came to U.S. in 1855 and settled in Wisconsin. Licensed in 1861, he rose through the ranks of ordained elder and bishop. He retired as Bishop in 1915 and died April 27, 1917. He was the editor of various Evangelical German-lanuage publications including EVANGELISCHES GESANGBUCH of 1877, for which he supplied a number of hymns. Of his twenty-four hymns the most famous, according to Ellen J. Lorenz, was "Pure and free from all corruption". He also translated many English hymns into German. —Mary L.
