The royal banners forward go

Author: Venantius Fortunatus, 530-609; John Mason Neale, 1818-66 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 134 hymnals Scripture: Colossians 2:9-15 Lyrics: 1 The royal banners forward go, the cross shines forth in mystic glow where he in flesh, our flesh who made, our sentence bore, our ransom paid. 2 There while he hung, his sacred side by soldier's spear was opened wide, to cleanse us in the precious flood of water mingled with his blood. 3 Fulfilled is now what David told in true prophetic song of old, how God the nations' king should be: for God is reigning from the tree. 4 O tree of glory, tree most fair, ordained those holy limbs to bear, how bright in royal robe it stood - the purple of a Saviour's blood! 5 Upon its arms, like balance true, he weighed the price for sinners due, the price which none but he could pay, and spoiled the spoiler of his prey. 6 To you, eternal Three in One, let homage due by all be done; as by the cross you now restore, so rule and guide us evermore. Woodford, 1820-1885 Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 95 hymnals Scripture: Colossians 2:15 Lyrics: 1 Christ, above all glory seated, King triumphant, strong to save, dying, thou hast death defeated; buried, thou hast spoiled the grave. 2 Thou art gone, where now is given what no mortal might could gain, on the eternal throne of Heaven, in thy Father’s power to reign. *3 There thy kingdoms all adore thee, heaven above and earth below; while the depths of hell before thee trembling and defeated bow. 4 We, O Lord, with hearts adoring, follow thee above the sky; hear our prayers thy grace imploring, lift our souls to thee on high. 5 So when thou again in glory on the clouds of heaven shalt shine we thy flock may stand before thee, owned for evermore as thine. 6 Hail! Never separated

If thou, my God and Teacher, Vouchsafe to be my own, Though poor, I shall be richer Than monarch on his throne. 3 If, while on earth I wander, My heart is right and blest, Ah, what shall I be yonder, In perfect peace and rest? Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle

Author: Venantius Fortunatus, 530-609; John Mason Neale, 1818-66 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 59 hymnals Scripture: Colossians 2:9-15 Lyrics: 1 Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle; of the mighty conflict sing: tell the triumph of the victim, to his cross your tribute bring. Jesus Christ, the world's Redeemer, from that cross now reigns as King. 2 When at length the appointed fullness of the sacred time was come, he was sent, the world's Creator, from the Father's heavenly home and was found in human fashion offspring of the Virgin's womb. 3 When the thirty years were ended which on earth he willed to see, willingly he meets his passion, born to set his people free; on the cross the Lamb is lifted, there the sacrifice to be. 4 There the nails and spear he suffers, vinegar and gall and reed; from his sacred body pierced blood and water both proceed: precious flood, which all creation from the stain of sin has freed. 5 Faithful cross, above all other, one and only noble tree, none in foliage, none in blossom, none in fruit your peer may be; sweet the wood and sweet the iron, and your load, most sweet is he. 6 Praise and honour to the Father, praise and honour to the Son, praise and honour to the Spirit, ever Three and ever One: One in might and One in glory while eternal ages run. Topics: Good Friday; Jesus Christ Passion and Cross; Passion Sunday Used With Tune: PANGE LINGUA

Save us, Thy people, from consuming passion, Who by our own false hopes and aims are spent. 2 Hope of the world, God's gift from highest heaven, Bringing to hungry souls the bread of life. Still let thy Spirit unto us be given To heal earth's wounds and end our bitter strife. 3 Hope of the world, afoot on dusty highways, Showing to wand'ring souls the path of light, Walk Thou beside us lest the tempting byways Lure us away from Thee to endless night. 4 Hope of the world, who by Thy cross didst save us From death and dark despair, from sin and guilt, We render back the love Thy mercy gave us; Take Thou our lives and use them as Thou wilt. 5 Hope of the world, O Christ, o'er death victorious, Who by this sign did conquer grief and pain, We would be faithful to Thy Gospel glorious. Thou art our Lord! Thou dost forever reign! Topics: Society Used With Tune: EIRENE
