The Conqueror's Song

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's Imitation of the Psalms of David, corrected and enlarged, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (2nd ed.) #38 (1786) Topics: Deliverance from despair; Despair deliverance from it; Deliverance from despair; Despair deliverance from it First Line: To thine almighty arm we owe Lyrics: 1 To thine almighty arm we owe The triumphs of the day: Thy terrors, Lord, confound the foe, And melt their strength away. 2 'Tis by thy aid our troops prevail, And break united powers, Or burn their boasted fleets, or scale The proudest of their towers. 3 How have we chas'd them through the field, And trod them to the ground, While thy salvation was our shield, But they no shelter found! 4 In vain to idol saints they cry, And perish in their blood; Where is a rock so great so high, So powerful as our God? 5 The God of Israel ever lives; His name be ever blest; 'Tis his own arm the victory gives, And gives his people rest. Scripture: Psalm 18 Languages: English

Psalm 18 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.38 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Deliverance from despair; Despair deliverance from it First Line: Thee will I love, O Lord, my strength Lyrics: Thee will I love, O Lord, my strength, My rock, my tower, my high defence: Thy mighty arm shall be my trust, For I have found salvation thence. Death, and the terrors of the grave, Stood round me with their dismal shade; While floods of high temptations rose, And made my sinking soul afraid. I saw the op'ning gates of hell, With endless pains and sorrows there, Which none but they that feel can tell; While I was hurried to despair. In my distress I called my God, When I could scarce believe him mine: He bowed his ear to my complaint, Then did his grace appear divine. With speed he flew to my relief, As on a cherub's wing he rode; Awful and bright as lightning shone The face of my deliverer, God. Temptations fled at his rebuke, The blast of his almighty breath; He sent salvation from on high, And drew me from the deeps of death. Great were my fears, my foes were great, Much was their strength, and more their rage; But Christ, my Lord, is conqueror still, In all the wars that devils wage. My song for ever shall record That terrible, that joyful hour; And give the glory to the Lord, Due to his mercy and his power Scripture: Psalm 18:1-6 Languages: English

Psalm 49 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.109 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Despair and hope in death; Hope and despair in death First Line: Why doth the man of riches grow Lyrics: Why doth the man of riches grow To insolence and pride, To see his wealth and honors flow With every rising tide? [Why doth he treat the poor with scorn, Made of the self-same clay, And boast as though his flesh was born Of better dust than they?] Not all his treasures can procure His soul a short reprieve, Redeem from death one guilty hour, Or make his brother live. [Life is a blessing can't be sold, The ransom is too high; Justice will ne'er be bribed with gold, That man may never die.] He sees the brutish and the wise, The tim'rous and the brave, Quit their possessions, close their eyes, And hasten to the grave. Yet 'tis his inward thought and pride,- My house shall ever stand And that my name may long abide, I'll give it to my land." Vain are his thoughts, his hopes are lost, How soon his memory dies! His name is written in the dust Where his own carcass lies. This is the folly of their way; And yet their sons, as vain, Approve the words their fathers say, And act their works again. Men void of wisdom and of grace, If honor raise them high, Live like the beast, a thoughtless race, And like the beast they die. [Laid in the grave like silly sheep, Death feeds upon them there, Till the last trumpet break their sleep In terror and despair.] Scripture: Psalm 49:6-14 Languages: English

Pardoning Grace

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #233 (1786) Topics: Despair deliverance from it; Despair deliverance from it First Line: Out of the deeps of long distress Lyrics: 1 Out of the deeps of long distress, The borders of despair, I sent my cries to seek thy grace, My groans to move thine ear. 2 Great God, should thy severer eye, And thine impartial hand, Mark and revenge iniquity, No mortal flesh could stand. 3 But there are pardons with my God, For crimes of high degree! Thy Son has bought them with his blood To draw us near to thee. 4 [I wait for thy salvation, Lord, With strong desires I wait; My soul, invited by thy word Stands watching at thy gate.] 5 [Just as the guards that keep the night Long for the morning skies, Watch the first beams of breaking light, And meet them with their eyes. 6 So waits my soul to see thy grace And more intent than they, Meets the first openings of thy face, And finds a brighter day.] 7 Then in the Lord let Israel trust, Let Israel seek his face; The Lord is good as well as just, And plenteous is his grace. 8 There’s full redemption at his throne, For sinners long enslav'd; The great Redeemer is his son: And Israel shall be sav'd. Psalm 17

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.36 (1806) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Despair and hope in death; Hope and despair in death First Line: Arise, my gracious God Lyrics: Arise, my gracious God, And make the wicked flee; They are but thy chastising rod, To drive thy saints to thee. Behold, the sinner dies, His haughty words are vain; Here in this life his pleasure lies, And all beyond is pain. Then let his pride advance, And boast of all his store; The Lord is my inheritance, My soul can wish no more. I shall behold the face Of my forgiving God; And stand complete in righteousness, Washed in my Savior's blood. There's a new heav'n begun, When I awake from death, Dressed in the likeness of thy Son, And draw immortal breath. Scripture: Psalm 17 Languages: English

Psalm 17

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.37 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Despair and hope in death; Hope and despair in death First Line: Lord, I am thine; but thou wilt prove Lyrics: Lord, I am thine; but thou wilt prove My faith, my patience, and my love: When men of spite against me join, They are the sword, the hand is thine. Their hope and portion lies below: 'Tis all the happiness they know, 'Tis all they seek; they take their shares, And leave the rest among their heirs. What sinners value I resign; Lord, 'tis enough that thou art mine: I shall behold thy blissful face, And stand complete in righteousness. This life's a dream, an empty show; But the bright world to which I go Hath joys substantial and sincere: When shall I wake and find me there? O glorious hour! O blest abode! I shall be near and like my God! And flesh and sin no more control The sacred pleasures of the soul. My flesh shall slumber in the ground Till the last trumpet's joyful sound; Then burst the chains with sweet surprise, And in my Savior's image rise. Scripture: Psalm 17 Languages: English
