Deliverance from Despair; or, Temptation overcome

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #31 (1786) Topics: Deliverance from despair; Despair deliverance from it; Deliverance from despair; Despair deliverance from it First Line: Thee will I love, O Lord, my strength Lyrics: 1 Thee will I love, O Lord, my strength, My rock, my tower, my high defence; Thy mighty arm shall be my trust, For I have found salvation thence. 2 Death, and the terrors of the grave, Stood round me with their dismal shade; While floods of high temptation rose, And made my sinking soul afraid. 3 I saw the opening gates of hell, With endless pains and sorrows there, (Which none but they that feel can tell) While I was hurry'd to despair. 4 In my distress I call'd my God, When I could scarce believe him mine; He bow'd his ear to my complaint; And prov'd his saving grace divine. 5 [With speed he flew to my relief, As on a cherub’s wing he rode; Awful, and bright as lightening, shone The face of my deliverer God. 6 Temptations fled at his rebuke, The blast of his Almighty breath: He sent salvation from on high, And drew me from the deeps of death.] 7 Great were my fears, my foes were great, Much was their strength, and more their rage; But Christ my Lord, is conqueror still, In all the wars the proud can wage. 8 My song for ever shall record That terrible, that joyful hour; And give the glory to the Lord Due to his mercy and his power. Humble trust or, despair prevented

Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CCLXXXVII (1792) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Despair Prevented; Humble trust, or despair prevented First Line: Lord, didst thou die, but not for me? Lyrics: 1 Lord didst thou die, but not for me? Am I forbid to trust thy blood? Is not thy pardon rich and free, Seal'd in the kind atoning flood? 2 Who then shall drive my trembling soul From thee to regions of despair? Who has survey'd the sacred roll, And found my name not written there? 3 Presumptuous thought! to fix the bound, To limit mercy's sovereign reign: What other happy souls have found, I'll seek, nor shall I seek in vain. 4 I own my guilt, my sins confess; Can men or devils make them more? Of Crimes already numberless, Vain the attempt to swell the score. 5 Were the black list before my sight, While I remember thou hast dy'd, 'Twould only urge my speedier flight, To seek salvation at thy side. 6 Low at thy feet I'll cast me down, To thee reveal my guilt and fear; And—if thou spurn me from thy throne— I'll be the first who perish'd there. Presumption and despair

Hymnal: The Hartford Selection of Hymns from the Most Approved Authors #CCLXXI (1799) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Presumption and despair First Line: I hate the tempter and his charms Lyrics: 1 I hate the tempter and his charms, I hate his flatt'ring breath; The serpent takes a thousand forms To cheat our souls to death. 2 He feeds our hopes with airy dreams, Or kills with slavish fear; And holds us still in wide extremes, Presumption or despair. 3 Now he persuades, "how easy 'tis "To walk the road to heav'n;" Anon he swells our sins, and cries, "They cannot be forgiv'n." 4 He bids young sinners "yet forbear "To think of God or death; "For prayer and devotion are "But melancholy breath." 5 He tells the aged, "they must die, "And 'tis too late to pray; "In vain for mercy now they cry, "For they have lost their day." 6 Thus he supports his cruel throne By mischief and deceit, And drags the sons of Adam down To darkness and the pit. 7 Almighty God, cut short his pow'r, Let him in darkness dwell; And, that he vex the earth no more, Confine him down to hell.
