Moved to Plymouth, Massachusetts, 1864; to Seymour, Connecticut, 1865; Organist, St. Peters (Episcopal) Church, 1865; married, 1967 to John Ashford; moved to Chicago, ca.1867; alto soloist (under Dudley Buck), St. James (Episcopal) Church, Chicago, 1967-1868; moved to Nashville, Tennessee, ca.1869. Studied pipe organ with Dr. Anderson; composition with Dr. R.H. Peters. 10 years, Mr. & Mrs. Ashford conducted choir work at Presbyterian Church and Jewish Temple in Nashville. Music director at Twelfth Congregational Church, Boston, Massachusetts, 1836-1957; Bowdoin Square Baptist Church, ca.1867-1870; Harvard Street Baptist Church, ca.1870-1875, and other Boston churches. Chorus director at Tremont Temple, 1857-1867. Author of popular songs, "Don't Give Up the Ship" and "The Mountaineer," and of thirteen church music books; published The Sacred Star hymnal, 1861, Boston. Wrote words of Easter hymn commencing, "Jesus Christ, our precious Savior," and hymn "Ever gracious, loving Savior, Come and bless us from on high." --E.F. R. G. Staples

b. 1833 Composer of "[Lord, I hear of show'rs of blessing]" in Windows of Heaven Robert Griffin Staples. He was born Robert Griffin on January 24, 1833 in Washington DC. Both of his parents died in a carriage accident when he was an infant; he was then adopted by his mother's sister, Mary Ann King, and her husband, Samuel Johnson Staples and he was given the name Robert Griffin Staples. He was a captain in the Union Army during the Civil War and after the war was promoted to Major. He then worked as chief clerk in the Portsmouth United States Navy Yard. Religion was an important part of his life, as well as music. He died June 20, 1891 in Portsmouth, VA. Dianne Shapiro, from Jean Brickey (great-granddaughter)
