Representative Text

1 Within a manger peaceful lies
The little Christ asleep,
While o’er Him mother Mary bends,
Her faithful watch to keep.

Refrain:
Lullaby, lullaby,
Angels are singing up in the sky;
Lullaby, lullaby,
"Glory to God most high!"

2 The shepherds kneel around His bed
And gaze with wond’ring eyes
Upon the Babe of Bethlehem,
The Lord of earth and skies. [Refrain]

3 We cannot see His blessed face,
As wise men did of old,
But we can give to Him our love,
More precious far than gold. [Refrain]

Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
