Representative Text

1 When tempted oft to turn aside,
And from His loving presence flee,
I clasp again that wounded hand,
When I remember Calvary.

Refrain:
O Calvary, lone Calvary,
O loving Christ who died for me,
How can my heart unfaithful be
When I remember Calvary?

2 When ‘mid the strain of toil and care
The cross too heavy seems to be,
And thorny grows my pilgrim way,
Then I remember Calvary. [Refrain]

3 When grief’s dark day comes on apace,
Unanswered seems each trusting plea,
And all my sins with shame I view,
Then I remember Calvary. [Refrain]

Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
