Representative Text

1 When dawneth the last great day,
And Christ as a Judge you see,
When called to account for the good you have done,
O what will your answer be?

Refrain:
What will your answer be?
O what will your answer be?
When life’s shadows fall and Jesus shall call?
O what will your answer be?

2 Has life been for self alone,
Or given in service true?
Has any one entered the heavenly goal,
Because you have helped them thro’? [Refrain]

3 In love have you shared a load
Too heavy for one to bear,
Or spoken a comforting word to a soul,
Or whispered and earnest pray’r? [Refrain]

4 Thro’ all of your glad, bright days
What sacrifice did you make?
O surely a cup of cold water you gave
With joy, for your dear Lord’s sake? [Refrain]

Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
