Representative Text

1 The little brook sings as it hurries along,
Happy and glad is its gay little song,
“Working for others will help you grow strong,
For others, for others, my dear.”

Chorus:
For others, for others, keep working,
Then life will be brimful of cheer;
For others, for others, keep working,
For others, for others, my dear.

2 The little leaves sing as they wave to and fro,
Fanning the birds in the nest down below,
“Working for others will make your heart glow,
For others, for others, my dear.” [Chorus]

3 The breezes all sing as they hasten away,
“Beautiful things we are doing each day,
Working for others will keep your life gay,
For others, for others, my dear.” [Chorus]

Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
