Representative Text

1 Songs in the night time, glad chords full of love
God in His mercy sends down from above,
Ever from sadness they bring full release,
Filling each spirit with heavenly peace.

Chorus:
Glad songs in the night, glad songs in the night,
He giveth His lov’d ones their souls to delight;
Like voices of angels from Paradise bright,
Unto God’s lov’d ones come songs in the night.

2 Songs in the night time that dwell in each heart,
Banish all sorrow, and bid care depart,
Out thro’ the silence and stillness they ring,
Never can mortals a sweeter strain sing. [Chorus]

3 Songs in the night time, His hand on each breast,
Trusting the Father, awake or at rest,
All His good pleasure in us to fulfil,
Saying to Jesus a joyful “I Will.” [Chorus]

Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
