Representative Text

1 Once deep conviction the Lord on me did roll,
My heart was heavy, and anxious for my soul;
Friends were converted, by faith saved thro’ and thro,
But while the Lord saved others, he saved me, too!
Yes, he saved me, too! He saved me, too!
While the Lord saved others, he saved me, too!

2 Once in a meeting, the pow’r of God was there,
Many were shouting his name in praise and pray’r;
God gave a blessing to those in ev’ry pew,
But while the Lord bless’d others, he blessed me, too!
Yes, he blessed me, too! He blessed me, too!
While the Lord blessed others, he blessed me, too!

3 Once we were praying for more of pow’r divine,
That in his service we might arise and shine;
God sent his Spirit, our fire he did renew,
But while the Lord filled others, he filled me, too!
Yes, he filled me, too! He filled me, too!
While the Lord filled others, he filled me, too!

4 God has a mansion prepared for you and me,
Where we will praise him, thro’ all eternity;
“I will receive you,” his promises are true,
But when the Lord takes others, he’ll take me, too!
Yes, he’ll take me, too! He’ll take me, too!
When the Lord takes others, he’ll take me, too!

Johnson Oatman, Jr., son of Johnson and Rachel Ann Oatman, was born near Medford, N. J., April 21, 1856. His father was an excellent singer, and it always delighted the son to sit by his side and hear him sing the songs of the church. Outside of the usual time spent in the public schools, Mr. Oatman received his education at Herbert's Academy, Princetown, N. J., and the New Jersey Collegiate Institute, Bordentown, N. J. At the age of nineteen he joined the M.E. Church, and a few years later he was granted a license to preach the Gospel, and still later he was regularly ordained by Bishop Merrill. However, Mr. Oatman only serves as a local preacher. For many years he was engaged with his father in the mercantile business at Lumberton… Go to person page >
