1 О, галава Хрыстова, аблітая крывёй!
Табе вянец цярнёвы сплялі чужых рукой.
Асьмеяна, пабіта сьхілілася з крыжа…
Хто, гледзячы на гэта, не плакаў, не дрыжаў?

2 Перад Тваім абліччам сьхіляўся цэлы сьвет;
Цябе Бог узьвялічыў перад пачаткам лет,
А што цяпер зацьміла Сьвятло Тваіх вачэй?
Якое цемры сіла Цябе агнём пячэ?

3 О, Спадару! Пакуты прыняў Ты за мяне;
Мае ўсе саграшэньні ўсклаў Бог на Цябе.
Няшчасны, засмучоны стаю я прад Табой:
Я патаптаў законы, а Ты—сьцякаў крывёй!

4 Хвала Табе, мой Спасе, за крыж і сьмерць Тваю:
Яны спакой і шчасьце душы маёй даюць.
Хачу Цябе трымацца, быць верным да канца,
Калі ж тут скончу працу—вярнуцца ў дом Айца.

5 Усё на гэтым сьвеце, як зорка, мільгане…
У дзень тугі і сьмерці Ты сам з’явіся мне.
Каб бачыў Твае раны, ды ўсю любоў Тваю,—
Тады мне лёгка стане з Табой кідаць зямлю.

Bernard of Clairvaux, saint, abbot, and doctor, fills one of the most conspicuous positions in the history of the middle ages. His father, Tecelin, or Tesselin, a knight of great bravery, was the friend and vassal of the Duke of Burgundy. Bernard was born at his father's castle on the eminence of Les Fontaines, near Dijon, in Burgundy, in 1091. He was educated at Chatillon, where he was distinguished for his studious and meditative habits.
