Representative Text

1 His lamp am I, so I must shine,
Nor let my little light grow dim;
Send forth His love-rays far and wide,
Some wand’ring soul to lead to Him.

Refrain:
His lamp am I, to cheer and guide,
His love to tell, His praise to show,
By my small light, if burning bright,
His name to glorify below.

2 His lamp am I, to spread good cheer,
To others’ feet safe guidance lend,
To drive the clouds of doubt away,
And show the Christ, the sinners’ Friend. [Refrain]

3 His lamp am I, though small the flame,
From day to day I’ll lift it high,
My aim to keep it burning true,
His blessed name to glorify. [Refrain]

Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
