The Cancelled Bond

He gave me back the bond

Author: Charles Stanley
Tune: AYNHOE

Representative Text

1 He gave me back the bond;
It was a heavy debt;
And as he gave he smiled and said,
"Thou wilt not me forget."

2 He gave me back the bond;
The seal was torn away;
And as he gave he smiled and said,
"Think thou of me alway."

3 That bond I still will keep,
Although it canceled be,
It tells me of the love of him
Who paid the debt for me.

4 I look on it and smile;
I look again and weep;
That record of his love for me
I will for ever keep.

5 It is a bond no more;
But it shall ever tell
All that I owed was fully paid
By my Immanuel.

Author: Charles Stanley

Stanley, Charles, a Sheffield merchant, b. circa 1821, a member of the Plymouth Brethren, has published a large number of tracts and some volumes of verse, including The Jewel and the Star, 1855, and Wild Thyme, under the signature "C. S." (sometimes given as "Charles Sabine," in error). From Wild Thyme the hymns "Behold the Lamb of God! Behold, believe, and live" (Faith), and "He gave me back the bond" (Pardon), are taken. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907)  Go to person page >
