Notes

Great Author of my being. C. Wesley. [Death desired.] First published in his Hymns and Sacred Poems, 1749, vol. ii., in 8 stanzas of 8 lines, as the third hymn of several on "Desiring Death." (Poetical Works, 1868-72, vol. v. p. 202.) In 1825 J. Montgomery included a cento therefrom in his Christian Psalmist, No. 338, but this has not come into common use. Another cento is No. 574 in the American Sabbath Hymn Book, 1858, and later editions. Both centos begin "Great Author," &c.
