Representative Text

1 Go tell the wondrous gospel story
To each nation in creation;
Lift up the banner of His glory,
Blessed cross of victory
Let those in darkness see the cheering light
That drives away the gloomy shades of night;
Go forth a mighty host to conquer,
In His name set the captives free.

Refrain:
To lands that dwell in deepest darkness
Send out the gospel light of love,
Till every nation of the earth shall worship the King of kings,
Immanuel, who reigns above.
Send out the light of grace eternal
Through all the earth, both far and wide;
Go forth and bear the tidings of salvation,
For which the Christ of Calv’ry died.

2 Proclaim the heritage of gladness;
Without measure, give love’s treasure
To those whose lives are full of sadness;
Speak some words of joy and peace.
The deserts wait to hear His holy name,
The distant isles as King the Lord would claim;
From shore to shore make known His goodness,
Whose great reign nevermore shall cease. [Refrain]

3 Go tell and set the echoes ringing,
Light is breaking, morn awaking;
Let notes of woe give place to singing,
Shines the Sun of Righteousness.
The mighty gospel soon shall fill each way,
In sin-sick hearts shall beam its healing ray;
Speed on the good time surely coming,
When the world shall the Christ confess. [Refrain]

Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
