1 Et Aar vi atter se at sænke
Sig i det dybe Fordum ned,
O, maatte dog vor Sjæl betænke
De Ting, som tjene til vor Fred!
O, bar hvert Aar, som gaar paa Flugt,
For Evigheden salig Frugt!

2 Vor Tid gaar bort, vort Aar er svundet,
Men hvor er Frugten, som vi bar?
Gud tidt har søgt, men ikke fundet,
Tungt over os han klaget har;
Det var ham svart, naar Rad paa Rad
For Frugt han fandt kun visne Blad.

3 Hug ned, han siger da med Harme,
Det Træ, som ingen Frugter bær,
Men udestænger Naadens Varme,
Kom Død, og gjør din Gjerning her!
Læg Øksen til ved Roden fort,
Og hug det af, og kast det bort!

4 Men Vingaardsmanden for os beder:
Et Aar endnu, o lad det staa!
Jeg graver Jorden, hevder, freder,
Tør haabes Frugt endnu at faa;
Kuun dette Aar lad staa i Fred,
Men er det spildt, saa hug det ned.

5 O Herre Jesus, giv os Kraften
At bære Gud god Frugt iaar!
Du selv indgyde Levesaften
I hver den Gren, som visnet staar!
Udsend din Aand, og Naade giv
Til Vekst og Frugt og hilligt Liv!

Rambach, Johann Jakob, D.D., son of Hans Jakob Rambach, cabinet maker at Halle on the Saale, was born at Halle, Feb. 24, 1693. In 1706 he left school and entered his father's workshop, but, in the autumn of 1707, he dislocated his ankle. During his illness he turned again to his schoolbooks; the desire for learning reawoke; and on his recovery, early in 1708, he entered the Latin school of the Orphanage at Halle (Glaucha). On Oct. 27, 1712, he matriculated at the University of Halle as a student of medicine, but soon turned his attention to theology. He became specially interested in the study of the Old Testament under J. H. Michaelis. Magnus Brostrup Landstad (born 7 October 1802 in Måsøy, Norway and died 8 October 1880 in Kristiania) was a Norwegian minister, psalmist and poet who published the first collection of authentic Norwegian traditional ballads in 1853. This work was criticized for unscientific methods, but today it is commonly accepted that he contributed significantly to the preservation of the traditional ballads. Landstad lived with his father Hans Landstad (1771–1838) who was also a minister, first in 1806 to Øksnes, to Vinje in 1811 and to Seljord in 1819. He took a theological degree (cand. theol) in 1827, and worked after that as the resident chaplain in Gausdal for six years.
