Dear Lord, though bitter is the cup

Representative Text

1 Dear Lord, though bitter is the cup,
Thy gracious hand pours out to me,
I cheerfully will drink it up,
That cannot hurt which comes from thee.

2 'Tis fill'd with thine unchanging love,
And not a drop of wrath is there;
The saints for ever bless'd above,
Were often most afflicted here.

3 From Jesus, thy incarnate Son,
I'll learn obedience to thy will;
And humbly kiss the chast'ning rod,
When its severest strokes I feel.

Notes

This was first published as "Dear Lord, though bitter is the cup", Hymn 264 (L. M.) in Rippon's Selection, 1787. In Beddome's Hymns of 1818 it is Hymn 206, "Lord, though bitter is the cup" (77. 77.). It is uncertain whether Rippon added a syllable to each line for his 1787 compilation, or Beddome dropped a syllable from each line after 1787.
