Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy

Representative Text

1 Come, ye sinners, poor and needy,
weak and wounded, sick and sore;
Jesus ready stands to save you,
full of pity, love, and pow'r.

2 Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome,
God's free bounty glorify;
true belief and true repentance,
every grace that brings you nigh.

3 Let not conscience make you linger,
nor of fitness fondly dream;
all the fitness He requireth
is to feel your need of Him.

4 Come, ye weary, heavy laden,
lost and ruined by the fall;
if you tarry till you're better,
you will never come at all.

5 Lo! th'incarnate God, ascended,
pleads the merit of His blood;
venture on Him, venture wholly;
let no other trust intrude.

Author: J. Hart

Hart, Joseph, was born in London in 1712. His early life is involved in obscurity. His education was fairly good; and from the testimony of his brother-in-law, and successor in the ministry in Jewin Street, the Rev. John Hughes, "his civil calling was" for some time "that of a teacher of the learned languages." His early life, according to his own Experience which he prefaced to his Hymns, was a curious mixture of loose conduct, serious conviction of sin, and endeavours after amendment of life, and not until Whitsuntide, 1757, did he realize a permanent change, which was brought about mainly through his attending divine service at the Moravian Chapel, in Fetter Lane, London, and hearing a sermon on Rev. iii. 10. Notes

Come, ye sinners poor and wretched. J. Hart. [Invitation.] First published in his Hymns Composed on Various Subjects, 1759, No. 118, in 7 stanzas of 6 lines, and headed "Come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ." One of the first to adopt it was R. Conyers in his Collection, 1774, with various alterations, and tho omission of stanza iv. Toplady, followed in 1776 with further alterations. Both versions were repeated in some hymnals, and again altered in others, until the altered forms of the hymn number over twenty. Conyers and Toplady are answerable for most of the popular changes in the text. The alterations are too many to enumerate. Original text in Lyra Britannica, 1867, p. 275.

In addition to changes in lines of the other than the first, that line has been altered to (1) "Come, ye sinners heavy laden," in the Baptist Praise Book, N. Y., 1871; (2) "Come, ye sinners sad and weary," in the Canterbury Hymnal, 1863; (3) "Come to Jesus, O my brothers," in Longfellow and Johnson's Book of Hymns, 1846; and (4) "Come ye weary, heavy laden," in Hatfield's Church Hymn Book 1872, and others.

RESTORATION (Southern Harmony)

ARISE is an anonymous American folk melody. Set to "Mercy, O Thou Son of David," the tune was published in William Walker's (PHH 44) Southern Harmony (1835) with the title RESTORATION. Its name was changed to ARISE (after the refrain in the ballad about the prodigal son) when it was set to Hart's te…
