Author (vs. 2-3): Thomas Cotterill

Thomas Cotterill (b. Cannock, Staffordshire, England, 1779; d. Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, 1823) studied at St. John's College, Cambridge, England, and became an Anglican clergyman. A central figure in the dispute about the propriety of singing hymns, Cotterill published a popular collection of hymns (including many of his own as well as alterations of other hymns), Selection of Psalms and Hymns in 1810. But when he tried to introduce a later edition of this book in Sheffield in 1819, his congregation protested. Many believed strongly that the Church of England should maintain its tradition of exclusive psalm singing. Around Thy table, Holy Lord. Mary Peters, née Bowly. [Holy Communion.] First published in Psalms & Hymns, London, Walther, 1842, pt. i. No. 253, in 7 stanza of 4 1. In 1847, it was included, with alterations by Mrs. Peters, in her Hymns intended to help the Communion of Saints, No. 39. The form in common use, as in Dr. Walker's Cheltenham Collection and others, is that of 1842. In the American Baptist Praise Book, N. Y., 1871, No. 795, the Service of Song for Baptist Churches, Boston, 1871, No. 837, and others, there is a cento composed of the opening stanza of this hymn, together with stanzas v. and vi., from T.
