Translator of "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus (He decidido seguir a Cristo)" in Santo, Santo, Santo In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Harry Dixon Loes

1895 - 1965 Arranger of "[I have decided to follow Jesus]" in Songs from the Haven of Rest Pseudonyms: Deal Bartells Born Harold Loes, the American gospel song writer took the middle name Dixon in honour of A. C. Dixon, the pastor of Moody Church at the time. Harry Dixon Loes studied at Moody Bible Institute, and after extensive training in music he served a number of churches with a ministry of music. From 1939 until his retirement he was a member of the music faculty of Moody Bible Institute. He wrote the lyrics for 1,500 gospel songs, and composed 3,000 tunes. One day in 1915, Paul Rader preached a sermon in Moody Church, in Chicago. His theme was, “All that I want is in Jesus.” In the congregation was young Harry Dixon Loes, then a senior at Moody Bible Institute, where he would eventually teach. Inspired by Dr. Rader’s message, Harry Loes wrote the words and music for a song he called "All Things in Jesus." It was first sung by the church’s youth group. After serving several churches as music director and later being active for more than twelve years in evangelist work, he joined the music faculty of Moody Bible Institute, in 1939, where he remained as a popular music teacher until his death in 1965. Mr. Loes was the writer of numerous gospel songs and choruses. One day, while listening to a sermon on the subject of Christ's atonement entitled “Blessed Redeemer,” Mr. Loes was inspired to compose this tune. He then sent the melody with the suggested title to Mrs. Christiansen, a friend for many years, asking her to write the text. b. 1955 Person Name: Daniel Charles Damon Arranger of "ASSAM" in New Hymns of Hope Daniel Charles Damon (b. 1955) is an internationally published writer of hymn texts and tunes and is Associate Editor of Hymnody for Hope Publishing Company, Carol Stream, Illinois. Damon is also a jazz pianist and has played in many hotels and clubs in the San Francisco Bay area. He holds degrees from Greenville College, Greenville, Illinois (BME, 1977) and Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, California (MDiv, 1987). He is an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church in the San Francisco Bay area and a life member of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. Several single-author collections of Damon's hymns have been published: Faith Will Sing (Carol Stream, 1993), The Sound of Welcome (Carol Stream, 1998), To the Thirsty World (Nashville, 2002), Fields of Mercy (Carol Stream, 2007), and Garden of Joy (Carol Stream, 2011). He collaborated with text writer Gracia Grindal in A Treasury of Faith: Lectionary Hymns Series A (Colfax. 2012). Damon's hymns have been included in several major hymnals and supplements. He has also written hymn translations from Vietnamese, Portuguese, and Shona languages, and, with Patrick Matsikenyiri, edited Njalo, A Collection of 16 Hymns in the African Tradition (Nashville, 1996). He has released three recordings of hymns, carols, and traditional songs, and a solo piano recording of jazz standards (available at www.damonstuneshop.com). Damon has presented his work at national conferences of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada and the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts. 1914 - 1987 Person Name: Roberto C. Savage Translator of "He decidido seguir a Cristo" in Celebremos Su Gloria Robert Carlson Savage was born in Wisconsin in 1914. He served as a missionary in Colombia and then worked 24 years for HCJB radio in Quito, Ecuador. He edited and compiled several songbooks and hymnals, including Himnos d Fe y Alabanza in 1966. He was born in Ceres, California in 1923. He graduated from Bob Jones University in 1944 with a B.A. in Sacred Music. 1843 - 1918 Author, stanza 3 of "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus" in Sing Praises Clark, John, born in England in 1843, and educated for the Baptist Ministry at Mr. Spurgeon's college. Proceeding to Canada in 1875 he has held there several pastorates of Baptist Churches, and now (1905) resides at Tryon, Prince Edward Island. His hymn, "With sacred joy, dear Lord, we meet" (For Conferences), is No. 805 in Sursum Corda, Phila., 1898. [Rev. L. F. After study at Charles Spurgeon's Pastors' College, he served two congregations in England before coming to Bridgetown, Nova Scotia. After three more Nova Scotia pastorates (Dartmouth, Yarmouth, and Micaux), he ministered at Cobourg, Ontario, and Turner's Falls, Massachusetts, before returning to Bass River (1896-1897), Westchester (1897-1899), Antigonish (1904-1905), and Selma (1905-1918), with an interlude at Tryon, Prince Edward Island in 1900-1903. Sundar Singh

1889 - 1929 Person Name: S. Sundar Singh, 1889-1929 Author (attributed to) of "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus" in Community of Christ Sings Simon Kama Marak (see Sadhu Sundar Singh) India 1889-1929. Born at Jorhat, Assam, India, the lyrics of this hymn were attributed as the last words of Nokseng, a Garo man, from a tribe of Meghalaya people then in Assam who converted to Christianity through efforts of an American Baptist missionary. It is said this person was reciting verses from the 12th chapter of John as he and his family were being killed by an Indian village chieftain, one by one.. first a child (shot with an arrow), then another, child, then the wife, then finally Nokseng, each time asked by the village chieftain to deny Jesus, but refusing to. After Nokseng was arrowed down, the chieftain, having a miraculous change of heart, is alleged to have said, “I, too, am now a follower of Jesus Christ, and the whole village accepted Jesus as Lord. An alternative tradition attributes the hymn to Simon Kama Marak, a missionary from Jorhat, Assam. Formation of these words into a hymn is attributed to the Indian missionary Sadhu Sundar Singh. The melody is also Indian, and entitled “Assam” after the region where the text originated. William Jensen Reynolds, an American hymnist in his own right, discovered the song in a collection of gospel songs published in Australia and included this song in his 1959 “Assembly songbook”. The hymn is cited as a prime example of decision theology, emphasizing the human will response rather than any action of God giving faith.
