Make me a captive, Lord

Author: George Matheson (1842-1906) Appears in 120 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 23:11 Lyrics: 1 Make me a captive, Lord, and then I shall be free; force me to render up my sword, and I shall conqueror be. I sink in life's alarms when by myself I stand; imprison me within thine arms, and strong shall be my hand. 2 My heart is weak and poor until it master find; it has no spring of action sure, it varies with the wind. It cannot freely move till thou hast wrought its chain; enslave it with thy matchless love, and deathless it shall reign. 3 My power is faint and low till I have learned to serve; it lacks the needed fire to glow, it lacks the breeze to nerve; it cannot drive the world, until itself be driven; its flag can only be unfurled when thou shalt breathe from heaven. 4 My will is not my own till thou hast made it thine; if it would reach a monarch's throne it must its crown resign; it only stands unbent, amid the clashing strife, when on thy bosom it has leant and found in thee its life. When People Learned of Jesus Christ

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Matthew 23:8-10 Lyrics: When people learned of Jesus Christ, they came to hear him preach. They longed to find out for themselves what Jesus had to teach. They pondered over parables, and gave his words much thought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. He turned the water into wine and multiplied the bread, becalmed the heavy, stormy seas, and even raised the dead. The people wondered at the signs and miracles he wrought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. He answered scribes and Pharisees who would with him contend. He healed the sick, the blind, the lame, and was the sinners' friend. They marveled at his prophecies, the healing that he brought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. We may not work a miracle, fulfill a prophet's role, encourage sinners to repent, or make the wounded whole, but, as disciples, we can tell we've found what all have sought: the never-ending love of God, the love that Jesus taught. Dear God, at home, at work, at school, in all of life, we pray, help us be teachers who reveal your love for us today, that all the world may recognize the spirit that is caught when his disciples try to live the love that Jesus taught. Topics: Jesus as Master Teacher and role model; Jesus Ministry of preachingm teaching, healing, and miraculous acts; Christian Community Role as teachers following Jesus' model Used With Tune: DEDICATION

Fountain of gladness, solace in sadness, more than a brother, father or mother, to thee we render tribute of song. 2 Jesu, we bless thee, worship, confess thee; shepherd of the sheep thou art: shelter, protect us, tend and direct us, strong of arm and kind of heart: shadow and moonlight turn into moonlight; soften the scorner, comfort the mourner, rule our behavior, order our way: bide with us, giving grace to the living, shrift to the dying freely supplying, be thou our Savior ever and aye.
