Psalm 50

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.116 (1806) Meter: Irregular First Line: The Lord, the Sovereign, sends his summons forth Lyrics: The Lord, the Sovereign, sends his summons forth, Calls the south nations and awakes the north; From east to west the sounding orders spread, Through distant worlds and regions of the dead: No more shall atheists mock his long delay; His vengeance sleeps no more: behold the day! Behold, the Judge descends, his guards are nigh; Tempest and fire attend him down the sky: Heav'n, earth, and hell, draw near; let all things come To hear his justice, and the sinner's doom: "But gather first my saints," the Judge commands, "Bring them, ye angels, from their distant lands. "Behold, my cov'nant stands for ever good, Sealed by th' eternal Sacrifice in blood, And signed with all their names; the Greek, the Jew, That paid the ancient worship or the new, There's no distinction here; come, spread their thrones, And near me seat my fav'rites and my sons. "I, their Almighty Savior and their God, I am their Judge: ye heav'ns, proclaim abroad My just eternal sentence, and declare Those awful truths that sinners dread to hear: Sinners in Zion, tremble and retire; I doom the painted hypocrite to fire. "Not for the want of goats or bullocks slain Do I condemn thee; bulls and goats are vain Without the flames of love; in vain the store Of brutal off'rings that were mine before; Mine are the tamer beasts and savage breed, Flocks, herds, and fields and forests where they feed. "If I were hungry, would I ask thee food? When did I thirst, or drink thy bullocks' blood? Can I be flattered with thy cringing bows, Thy solemn chatt'rings and fantastic vows? Are my eyes charmed thy vestments to behold, Glaring in gems, and gay in woven gold? "Unthinking wretch! how couldst thou hope to please A God, a Spirit, with such toys as these, While, with my grace and statutes on thy tongue, Thou lov'st deceit, and dost thy brother wrong? In vain to pious forms thy zeal pretends, Thieves and adulterers are thy chosen friends. "Silent I waited with long-suff'ring love, But didst thou hope that I should ne'er reprove? And cherish such an impious thought within, That God, the Righteous, would indulge thy sin? Behold my terrors now: my thunders roll, And thy own crimes affright thy guilty soul." Sinners, awake betimes; ye fools, be wise; Awake before this dreadful morning rise; Change your vain thoughts, your crooked works amend, Fly to the Savior, make the Judge your friend Lest, like a lion, his last vengeance tear Your trembling souls, and no deliv'rer near. Faith Triumphing

Author: Toplady Hymnal: Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs #CCLXXXIV (1792) Meter: Irregular First Line: A debtor to mercy alone Lyrics: 1 A debtor to mercy alone, Of covenant mercy I sing; Nor fear with thy righteousness on, My person and off'rings to bring: The terrors of law, and of God, With me can have nothing to do; My Saviour's obedience and blood Hide all my transgressions from view. 2 The work which his goodness began, The arm of his strength will complete, His promise is yea and amen, And never was forfeited yet: Things future, nor things that are now, Nor all things below, nor above, Can make him his purpose forgo, Or sever my soul from his love. 3 My name from the palms of his hands Eternity will not erase; Impressed on his heart it remains, In marks of indelible grace: Yes, I to the end shall endure, As sure as the earnest is giv'n; More happy, but not more secure, The glorifi'd spirits in heav'n. Priest, High Priest

Author: Cennick Hymnal: Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs #CCXXXV (1792) Meter: Irregular First Line: A good High Priest is come Lyrics: 1 A good High Priest is come, Supplying Aaron's place, And taking up his room, Dispensing life and grace: The law by Aaron's priesthood came, But grace and truth by Jesus' name. 2 My Lord a priest is made, As sware the mighty God, To Israel and his seed; Ordain'd to offer blood, For sinners who his mercy seek, A priest, as was Melchizedek. 3 He once temptations knew, Of ev'ry sort and kind, That he might succour shew, To ev'ry tempted mind: In ev'ry point, the Lamb was tried Like us, and then for us, he died. 4 He dies, but lives again, And by the altar stands; There shews how he was slain, Op'ning His pierced hands. Our Priest abides, and pleads the cause Of us, who have transgress'd his laws. 5 I other Priests disclaim, And laws and off'rings too, None but the bleeding Lamb The mighty work can do; He shall have all the praise, for he Hath lov'd, and liv'd, and di'd for me. Arise, my soul, arise

Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns, from Various Authors, Supplementary for the Use of Christians. 1st ed. #VI (1816) Meter: Irregular Lyrics: 1 Arise, my soul, arise, Shake off thy guilty fears, The bleeding Sacrifice In my behalf appears; Before the throne my Saviour stands: My name is written on his hands. 2 He ever lives above, For me to intercede; With his redeeming love, His precious blood to plead; His blood was spilt for all our race, And sprinkles now the throne of grace. 3 Five bleeding wounds he bears, Receiv'd on Calvary; They pour effectual prayers, They strongly speak for me: Forgive him, O forgive they cry! Nor let that ransom'd sinner die. 4 The Father hears him pray, His dear annointed one; He cannot turn away The presence of his Son: His Spirit answers to the blood, And tells me I am born of God. 5 To God I'm reconcil'd, His pard'ning voice I hear: He owns me for his child, I can no longer fear: With confidence I now draw nigh, And Father, Abba Father! cry. Transfiguration on Mount Tabor

Hymnal: Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs #CXXVII (1792) Meter: Irregular First Line: As Jesus stood on Tabor's mound Lyrics: 1 As Jesus stood on Tabor's mound, Celestial glory beam'd around, And cloth'd the man, the God, In lucid robes of spotless withe; Whilst splendors of primeval light Loos'd day's unbounded flood. 2 More pure than Salmons radiant snow: His whit'ning garments radiant flow: How chang'd his mortal form! Thus breaks the sun all glorious forth, And sev'n fold light revisits earth, As dies away the storm. 3 Behold the man! what beauties shine! 'Tis where the Father beams divine With light, and life, and grace: Those glories which surround the God, His mighty arm shall pour abroad, On Adam's naked race. 4 Lord Jesus come! From Tabor's mound, Light the whole earth with glory round: Thyself, the life, display: These bodies change to heav'nly forms: O God! my soul, my spirit warms: I pant, to see thy day. Redemption, the Wonder of Angels

Hymnal: Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs #CCLIX (1792) Meter: Irregular First Line: Behold, that splendour! Hear the shout! Lyrics: 1 Behold that splendour! hear the shout! Heav'n opens! Angels issue out, And throng the nether sky. What solemn tidings do they bring? Rapt at th' approach of Isr'el’s King, They speak the Monarch nigh. 2 Why does the King approach our land? Comes he with terror in his hand, The merit of our crimes? Shepherds be glad: he comes with peace, Not wrath but universal grace, To bless e'en distant climes. 3 See Heav'n’s great heir, a woman’s son! Behold a manger is his throne! Nay, see him born to die: Your is the guilt, but his the pain: His are the sorrows, yours the gain: Then let his praise be high. 4 Come, mighty King! the grace enhance, (A stable was thy palace once) Dwell in these hearts of ours: Teach us to praise the Father's love, Till blest, transported, fir'd above, We sing with nobler pow'rs.
