O God, thou art the Father

Author: Duncan Macgregor (1854-1923); St. Columba (521-597) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #119 (2005) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Hymnal Title: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Lyrics: 1 O God, thou art the Father of all that have believed: from whom all hosts of angels have life and power received. O God, thou art the maker of all created things, the righteous Judge of judges, the almighty King of kings. 2 High in the heavenly Zion thou reignest God adored; and in the coming glory thou shalt be Sovereign Lord. Beyond our ken thou shinest, the everlasting Light; ineffable in loving, unthinkable in might. 3 Thou to the meek and lowly thy secrets dost unfold; O God, thou doest all things, all things both new and old. I walk secure and blessèd in every clime or coast, in name of God the Father, and Son, and Holy Ghost. The songs of all our praise belong

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: In Melody and Songs #65 (2014) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Hymnal Title: In Melody and Songs Lyrics: The songs of all our praise belong to you, Almighty God; I give my heart, I give my tongue, to spread your name abroad. How great the works your hands have wrought! How glorious in our sight! The wise in every age have sought your wonders with delight. How most exact is nature's frame! how wise th' Eternal Mind! Your counsels need not change the scheme that your first thoughts designed. All nature, time, and earth, and skies, proclaim your heavenly skill; we need your truth to make us wise, obedient, to your will. God, You redeem your chosen ones; your covenant is strong. The orders that your lips pronounce will keep us free from wrong. Your Son, the great Redeemer, came with ways both just and pure; and holy, reverent is his name; he makes our path secure. Scripture: Psalm 111 Languages: English Tune Title: DURROW

Deep in the shadows of the past

Author: Brian Wren (b. 1936) Hymnal: New Church Praise #18 (1975) Hymnal Title: New Church Praise Lyrics: 1 Deep in the shadows of the past, far out from settled lands, some nomads travelled with their God across the desert sands. The dawn of hope for all mankind was glimpsed by them alone-- a promise calling them ahead, a future yet unknown. 2 While others bowed to changeless gods they met a mystery: God with an uncompleted name, 'I am what I will be'; and by their tents, around their fires, in story, song and law they praised, remembered, handed on a past that promised more. 3 From Abraham to Nazareth the promise changed and grew while some, remembering the past, recorded what they knew, and some, in letters or laments, in prophecy and praise, recovered, held and re-expressed new hope for changing days. 4 For all the writings that survived, for leaders, long ago, who sifted, chose, and then preserved the Bible that we know, give thanks, and find its promise yet our comfort, strength and call-- the working model for our faith alive with hope for all.
