b. 1939 Person Name: Delores Dufner, OSB, b. 1939 Author of "The Reign of God" in Gather Comprehensive, Second Edition Delores Dufner is a member of St. Benedict’s Monastery in St. Joseph, Minnesota, with Master's Degrees in Liturgical Music and Liturgical Studies. She is currently a member and a Fellow of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, the National Pastoral Musicians (NPM), the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), and the Monastic Worship Forum. Delores is a writer of liturgical, scripturally based hymn and song texts which have a broad ecumenical appeal and are contracted or licensed by 34 publishers in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and China. She has received more than 50 commissions to write texts for special occasions or needs and has published over 200 hymns, many of which have several different musical settings and appear in several publications. She is the author of three hymn collections: Sing a New Church (1994, Oregon Catholic Press), The Glimmer of Glory in Song (2004, GIA Publications), and And Every Breath, a Song (2011, GIA Publications). Delores, the middle child of five, was born and raised on a farm in the Red River Valley of North Dakota. She attended a one-room country school in which she learned to read music and play the tonette, later studying piano and organ. Delores was a school music teacher, private piano and organ instructor, and parish organist/choir director for twelve years. She served as liturgy coordinator for her religious community of 775 members for six years and as Director of the Office of Worship for the Diocese of St. Cloud, Minnesota for fifteen years. She subsequently worked as a liturgical music consultant for the Diocese of Ballarat, Victoria in southeast Australia for fifteen months. Beckenham, Kent, England, 1942; d. England, 1996) was headed for a career in the sciences. However, after one year of study in physics at the University of London, he transferred to Oak Hill College to study theology. He also studied at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, and received a M.Phil. from the University of Southhampton in 1973. Ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1966, Perry served the parish of St. Helen's in Liverpool as a youth worker and evangelist. From 1972 to 1981 he was the vicar of Bitterne in Southhampton and from 1981 to 1989, rector of Eversley in Hampshire and chaplain at the Police Staff College. He then became vicar of Tonbridge in Kent, where he remained until his death from a brain tumor in 1996. Perry published widely in the areas of Bible study and worship. He edited Jubilate publications such as Hymns far Today's Church (1982), Carols far Today (1986), Come Rejoice! (1989), and Psalms for Today (1990). Composer of the musical drama Coming Home (1987), he also wrote more than two hundred hymns and Bible versifications. Bert Polman

Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Brian A. Wren

b. 1936 Person Name: Brian Wren, 1936- Author of "Dear Christ, Uplifted from the Earth" in Worship and Rejoice Brian Wren (b. Romford, Essex, England, 1936) is a major British figure in the revival of contemporary hymn writing. He studied French literature at New College and theology at Mansfield College in Oxford, England. Ordained in 1965, he was pastor of the Congregational Church (now United Reformed) in Hockley and Hawkwell, Essex, from 1965 to 1970. He worked for the British Council of Churches and several other organizations involved in fighting poverty and promoting peace and justice. This work resulted in his writing of Education for Justice (1977) and Patriotism and Peace (1983). With a ministry throughout the English-speaking world, Wren now resides in the United States where he is active as a freelance lecturer, preacher, and full-time hymn writer. His hymn texts are published in Faith Looking Forward (1983), Praising a Mystery (1986), Bring Many Names (1989), New Beginnings (1993), and Faith Renewed: 33 Hymns Reissued and Revised (1995), as well as in many modern hymnals. Thomas H. Troeger

Troeger, b. 1945 Author of "The Wind That Stirs the Sea to Sing" in One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism Thomas Troeger (1945-2022), professor of Christian communication at Yale Divinity school, was a well known preacher, poet, and musician. He was a fellow of Silliman College, held a B.A. from Yale University; B.D. Colgate Rochester Divinity School; S.T. D. Dickinson College, and was awarded an honorary D.D. from Virginia Theological Seminary. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Church in 1970 and the Episcopal Church in 1999, and remained dually aligned with both traditions. Troerger led conferences and lectures in worship and preaching throughout North America, as well as in Denmark, Holland, Australia, Japan, and Africa. He served as national chaplain to the American Guild of Organists, and for at least three years he hosted the Season of Worship broadcast for Cokesbury. He was president of the Academy of Homiletics as well as Societas Homiletica. He had, as of 2009, written 22 books in the areas of preaching, poetry, hymnody, and worship. Many of his hymn texts are found in New Hymns for the Lectionary (Oxford, 1992), and God, You Made All Things for Singing (Oxford, 2009). Laura de Jong

Herman G. Stuempfle

Stuempfle, Jr., 83, died Tuesday, March 13, 2007, after a long illness. Born April 2, 1923, in Clarion, he was the son of the late Herman G. and Helen (Wolfe) Stuempfle, Sr. Stuempfle lived most of his life in Gettysburg, PA. He served as President of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg. He attended Hughesville public schools, and was a graduate of Susquehanna University and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. He received additional advanced degrees from Union Theological Seminary in New York and a doctoral degree at Southern California School of Theology at Claremont. He retired in 1989. Rev. Dr. Stuempfle was the author of several books and numerous articles and lectures on preaching, history, and theology. He was also among the most honored and respected hymn writers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Rev. Dr. Stuempfle was known for his leadership in community and civic projects. Always taking an active stance on social issues, he participated in the creation of day care centers, served on the Gettysburg interchurch social action committee, helped create and support prison ministries and a homeless shelter, and tutored young people in the after school program of Christ Lutheran Church, where he was a long time member. --Excerpts from his obituary published in Evening Sun from Mar. 15 to Mar. 16, 2007

H. T. Burleigh

Stamford, CT, 1949) began his musical career as a choirboy in St. Paul's Cathedral, Erie, Pennsylvania. He also studied at the National Conservatory of Music, New York City, where he was befriended by Antonín Dvořák and, according to tradition, provided Dvořák with some African American musical themes that became part of Dvořák's New World Symphony. Burleigh composed at least two hundred works but is most remem­bered for his vocal solo arrangements of African American spirituals. Anne Zaki

Translator (Arabic) of "In Christ There Is No East or West" in Lift Up Your Hearts Anne Zaki was born in Cairo, Egypt, where her father was a pastor. At age 16 she was selected by the Egyptian government to represent her homeland in an international school in Western Canada, dedicated to peace and international understanding. After graduation she attended Calvin College, where she learned to integrate her faith and her dedication to social justice. Following her graduation with a BA in psychology and sociology in 1999, Zaki married Naji Umran, a Canadian-Syrian student at Calvin Theological Seminary, and they had four boys: Jonathan, Sebastian, Emmanuel, and Alexander. Zaki also earned two master's degrees, one in social psychology from the American University in Cairo in 2002, and one in divinity from Calvin Theological Seminary in 2009. She is currently pursuing a PhD in preaching at Fuller Theological Seminary. She worked as a research and development specialist for global worship for the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship from 2003 – 2013, developing global worship resources and organizing global worship conferences worldwide. Ever since, she's been cultivating a global perspective on life and faith by speaking at mission gatherings like Missio Nexus, the Global Consultation on Music and Missions (GCoMM), the Lausanne Movement's Younger Leaders Gathering (YLG), and Urbana 18. After pastoring churches in Michigan and British Columbia, the couple fulfilled their dream of returning to Egypt to live and serve in September 2011, nine months after the Arab Spring. Anne currently teaches at the Evangelical Presbyterian Seminary in Cairo, Egypt, courses on Preaching, Worship, Spiritual Formation, Psychology, and Communication. Anne Zaki

Adolf Burkhardt

1929 - 2004 Translator of "En Krist' ne estas sud' aŭ nord'" in TTT-Himnaro Cigneta Evangelical German pastor, writer, translator (largely of religious songs), ecumenical activist, and one of the most influential and prolific hymnal compilers in Esperanto. He was a member of the editorial committee responsible for the 1971 Protestant hymnal Adoru Kantante, the sole compiler of the ten-installment Tero kaj Ĉielo Kantu (later republished in three volumes), and one of the three members of "Kloster Kirchberg", the editorial board that produced the 2001 ecumenical Esperanto hymnal Adoru - Ekumena Diserva Libro. Burkhardt was honored in a 368-page Festschrift, Esperante kaj Ekumene, Fest-libro por la 75a naskiĝ-tago de Adolf Burkhardt. With the other members of Kloster Kirchberg, he shared in the 2002 FAME-foundation's Aalener Esperanto-Kulturpreis. Articles in the Esperanto and German Wikipedias.
