There’s a wideness in God’s mercy

Author: Frederick William Faber, 1814-63 Hymnal: Together in Song #136 (1999) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Scripture: Matthew 23:4 Lyrics: 1 There's a wideness in God's mercy like the wideness of the sea, and forgiveness in his justice sealed for us on Calvary. 2 There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed; there is joy for all the members in the sorrows of the Head. 3 For the love of God is broader than the measures of our mind; and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind. 4 But we make his love too narrow by false limits of our own, and we magnify his strictness with a zeal he would not own. 5 If our love were but more simple we should take him at his word; and our lives would be illumined by the goodness of our Lord. Topics: God's Love to Us; Mercy of God; People of God; Providence; Redemption; Response to Word; Saints Days and Holy Days St Mary Magdalene; Saints Days and Holy Days St Paul Languages: English Tune Title: CROSS OF JESUS

At the Name of Jesus

Author: Caroline Maria Noel, 1817-1877 Hymnal: Journeysongs (3rd ed.) #465 (2012) Meter: 6.5.6.5 D Scripture: Matthew 23:12 Lyrics: 1 At the Name of Jesus Every knee shall bow, Ev'ry tongue confess him King of glory now; 'Tis the Father's pleasure We should call him Lord, Who from the beginning Was the mighty Word. 2 Humbled for a season, To receive a Name From the lips of sinners, Unto whom he came, Faithfully he bore it Spotless to the last, Brought it back victorious, When through death he passed. 3 Bore it up triumphant, With its human light, Through all ranks of creatures, To the central height, To the throne of Godhead, To the Father's breast; Filled it with the glory Of that perfect rest. 4 In your hearts enthrone him; There let him subdue All that is not holy, All that is not true: Crown him as your Captain In temptation's hour; Let his will enfold you In its light and power. 5 Jesus, Lord and Savior, Shall return again, With his Father's glory O'er the earth to reign; For all wreaths of empire Meet upon his brow, And our hearts confess him King of glory now. Make me a captive, Lord

Author: George Matheson (1842-1906) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #534 (2005) Scripture: Matthew 23:11 Lyrics: 1 Make me a captive, Lord, and then I shall be free; force me to render up my sword, and I shall conqueror be. I sink in life's alarms when by myself I stand; imprison me within thine arms, and strong shall be my hand. 2 My heart is weak and poor until it master find; it has no spring of action sure, it varies with the wind. It cannot freely move till thou hast wrought its chain; enslave it with thy matchless love, and deathless it shall reign. 3 My power is faint and low till I have learned to serve; it lacks the needed fire to glow, it lacks the breeze to nerve; it cannot drive the world, until itself be driven; its flag can only be unfurled when thou shalt breathe from heaven. 4 My will is not my own till thou hast made it thine; if it would reach a monarch's throne it must its crown resign; it only stands unbent, amid the clashing strife, when on thy bosom it has leant and found in thee its life. O Holy City, Seen of John

Author: Walter Russell Bowie Hymnal: Glory to God #374 (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6.8.6 Scripture: Matthew 23:1-12 Lyrics: 1 O holy city, seen of John, where Christ, the Lamb, does reign, within whose four-square walls shall come no night, nor need, nor pain, and where the tears are wiped from eyes that shall not weep again! 2 O shame to us who rest content while lust and greed for gain in street and shop and tenement wring gold from human pain, and bitter lips in deep despair cry, "Christ has died in vain!" 3 Give us, O God, the strength to build the city that has stood too long a dream; whose laws are love, whose ways are servant-hood, and where the sun that shines becomes your grace for human good. 4 Already in the mind of God that city rises fair. Lo, how its splendor challenges the souls that greatly dare, and bids us seize the whole of life and build its glory there. The Church of Christ in Every Age

Author: Fred Pratt Green Hymnal: Glory to God #320 (2013) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Matthew 23:1-12 Lyrics: 1 The church of Christ in every age, beset by change but Spirit-led, must claim and test its heritage and keep on rising from the dead. 2 Across the world, across the street, the victims of injustice cry for shelter and for bread to eat, and never live before they die. 3 Then let the servant church arise, a caring church that longs to be a partner in Christ's sacrifice, and clothed in Christ's humanity. 4 For Christ alone, whose blood was shed, can cure the fever in our blood, and teach us how to share our bread and feed the starving multitude. 5 We have no mission but to serve in full obedience to our Lord: to care for all, without reserve, and spread Christ's liberating word. When People Learned of Jesus Christ

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: Come Away with Me #15 (1998) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Scripture: Matthew 23:8-10 Lyrics: When people learned of Jesus Christ, they came to hear him preach. They longed to find out for themselves what Jesus had to teach. They pondered over parables, and gave his words much thought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. He turned the water into wine and multiplied the bread, becalmed the heavy, stormy seas, and even raised the dead. The people wondered at the signs and miracles he wrought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. He answered scribes and Pharisees who would with him contend. He healed the sick, the blind, the lame, and was the sinners' friend. They marveled at his prophecies, the healing that he brought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. We may not work a miracle, fulfill a prophet's role, encourage sinners to repent, or make the wounded whole, but, as disciples, we can tell we've found what all have sought: the never-ending love of God, the love that Jesus taught. Dear God, at home, at work, at school, in all of life, we pray, help us be teachers who reveal your love for us today, that all the world may recognize the spirit that is caught when his disciples try to live the love that Jesus taught.
