From Greenland's icy mountains

Author: Heber Appears in 1,680 hymnals Scripture: Acts 16:9 Lyrics: 1 From Greenland's icy mountains, From India's coral strand, Where Afric's sunny fountains Roll down their golden sand, From many an ancient river, From many a palmy plain, They call us to deliver Their land from error's chain. 2 What though the spicy breezes Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle, Though every prospect pleases, And only man is vile! In vain, with lavish kindness, The gifts of God are strown: The heathen, in his blindness, Bows down to wood and stone. 3 Shall we, whose souls are lighted By wisdom from on high, Shall we to men benighted The light of life deny? Salvation! oh, salvation! The joyful sound proclaim, Till earth's remotest nation Has learned Messiah's name. 4 Waft, waft, ye winds, his story, And you, ye waters, roll, Till, like a sea of glory, It spreads from pole to pole; Till o'er our ransomed nature, The Lamb, for sinners slain, Redeemer, King, Creator, In bliss returns to reign. Topics: The Christian Church Missionary; Condition of the Heathen

Hymn 121

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 57 hymnals Scripture: Acts 16:14-15 First Line: Thus saith the mercy of the Lord Lyrics: Thus saith the mercy of the Lord, "I'll be a God to thee; I'll bless thy num'rous race, and they Shall be a seed for me." Abram believed the promised grace, And gave his sons to God; But water seals the blessing now, That once was sealed with blood. Thus Lydia sanctified her house, When she received the word; Thus the believing jailer gave His household to the Lord. Thus later saints, eternal King! Thine ancient truth embrace; To thee their infant offspring bring, And humbly claim the grace.

Hear the Cry

Author: Clara M. Brooks Meter: 8.7.8.7 D with refrain Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Acts 16:9 First Line: O'er the ocean's rolling waters Refrain First Line: Who will go, oh, who will go Lyrics: 1 O’er the ocean’s rolling waters, From an eastern land today, Comes a cry from heathen daughters, “Save us ere we’re lost for aye”; Loud we hear their voices crying, Borne upon each floating breeze, For their souls in sin are dying, While we idly wait at ease. Refrain: Who will go, oh, who will go, Bear the message o’er the sea? Oh, who will go? 2 Home and friends to us seem nearer, As we hear their pleading cry; Native land seems even dearer— Still in tears they moan and sigh; “Will not someone leave his nation? You are saved, but we are lost!” Jesus died for all creation— Who will come at any cost? [Refrain] 3 “Though your home and friends you cherish, Will you not regard the cries From the lips of those who perish, As they rend the vaulted skies; Many come with sect confusion, Who themselves are in the night, Bringing only more delusion; Who will bring the gospel light?” [Refrain] 4 Go, my brother, o’er the ocean, Leave behind all earthly dross; Prove to God thy life’s devotion, Lift the banner of His cross; Jesus left His home in glory, Died to set the captives free; Go and tell the wondrous story, Bear the message o’er the sea.[Refrain] Topics: Missionary Used With Tune: [O'er the ocean's rolling waters] Text Sources: Timeless Truths (http://library.timelesstruths.org/music/Hear_the_Cry); Faith Publishing House, Evening Light Songs, 1949, edited 1987 (339); The Gospel Trumpet Company, Select Hymns, 1911 (210)

A Vision Seen, a Call Obeyed

Author: Jeffery Rowthorn Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Acts 16:9-10 Lyrics: A vision seen, a call obeyed drew Paul to Europe's shore where, resolute and unafraid, good news of Christ he bore; and in his steps, to all these lands, by dangers undeterred, came those whose lives and lips and hands made known God's saving word. This word, once sown in Europe's soil, set hearts and minds afire: the builder's skill, the laborer's toil raised nave and roof and spire: God's house where music touched the soul with pentecostal fire and art, the Savior to extol, clothed faith in bold attire. Time came when greed for gain was rife and faith gave way to doubt; then holy war and civil strife put mercy's claims to rout. Yet Spirit-led and eloquent, reformers did not cease to call on Christians to repent and strive for Europe's peace. The Bible as their strength and stay, their psalms robustly sung, those exiled here rejoiced to pray in their own mother-tongue; and, seeking refuge, folk still come to share in Europe's dream; let fear of strangers be overcome and `Welcome' be our theme. And now, Lord Jesus, make us one with all who bear your Name, with all by whom love's work is done, whose lives your truth proclaim; empower us with a faith well-trained, a glimpse of life made whole, that daily, by your grace sustained, we nourish Europe's soul. Used With Tune: EUROPE
