Glorious Is Your Name, Most Holy

Author: Ruth Eliiott Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 9 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Glorious is your name, Most Holy, God and Father of us all; We, your servants, bow before you, Strive to answer every call. You with life's great good have blest us, Cared for us from earliest years; Unto you our thanks we render; Your deep love overcomes all fears. 2 For our world of need and anguish We would lift to you our prayer. Faithful stewards of your bounty, May we with our brothers share. In the name of Christ our Savior, Who redeems and sets us free, Gifts we bring of heart and treasure, That our lives may worthier be. 3 In the midst of time we journey; From your hand comes each new day: We would use it in your service, Humbly, wisely, while we may. God is Here!

Author: Fred Pratt Green, b. 1903 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 47 hymnals First Line: God is here! As we your people Lyrics: 1 God is here! As we your people meet to offer praise and prayer, may we find in fuller measure what it is in Christ we share. Here, as in the world around us, all our varied skills and arts wait the coming of your Spirit into open minds and hearts. 2 Here are symbols to remind us of our lifelong need of grace; here are table, font, and pulpit; here the cross has central place. Here in honesty of preaching, here in silence, as in speech, here, in newness and renewal, God the Spirit comes to each. 3 Here our children find a welcome in the Shepherd's flock and fold; here, as bread and wine are taken, Christ sustains us, as of old. Here the servants of the Servant seek in worship to explore what it means in daily living to believe and to adore. 4 Lord of all, of Church and kingdom, in an age of change and doubt keep us faithful to the gospel; help us work your purpose out. Here, in this day's celebration, all we have to give, receive; we, who cannot live without you, we adore you! We believe! Used With Tune: ABBOT'S LEIGH

Glorious Things Are Sung of Zion

Author: William W. Phelps, 1792–1872 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 16 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Glorious things are sung of Zion, Enoch’s city seen of old, Where the righteous, being perfect, Walked with God in streets of gold. Love and virtue, faith and wisdom, Grace and gifts were all combined. As himself each loved his neighbor; All were one in heart and mind. 2. There they shunn’d the pow’r of Satan And observed celestial laws; For in Adam-ondi-Ahman Zion rose where Eden was. When beyond the pow’r of evil, So that none could covet wealth, One continual feast of blessings Crown’d their days with peace and health. 3. Then the tow’rs of Zion glittered Like the sun in yonder skies, And the wicked stood and trembled, Filled with wonder and surprise. Then their faith and works were perfect; Lo, they followed their great Head! So the city went to heaven, And the world said, “Zion’s fled!” 4. When the Lord returns with Zion, And we hear the watchman cry, Then we’ll surely be united, And we’ll all see eye to eye. Then we’ll mingle with the angels, And the Lord will bless his own. Then the earth will be as Eden, And we’ll know as we are known. Topics: Jesus Christ Second Coming; Millennium; Restoration; Unity; Zion Scripture: Isaiah 52:8 Used With Tune: IN BABILONE

God is love: let heaven adore him

Author: Timothy Rees, 1874-1939 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 33 hymnals Lyrics: 1 God is love: let heaven adore him; God is love: let earth rejoice; let creation sing before him, and exalt him with one voice. He who laid the earth's foundation, he who spread the heavens above, he who breathes through all creation, he is love, eternal love. 2 God is love: and he enfoldeth all the world in one embrace; with unfailing grasp he holdeth every child of every race. And when human hearts are breaking under sorrow's iron rod, then they find that selfsame aching deep within the heart of God. 3 God is love: and though with blindness sin afflicts the souls of men, God's eternal loving-kindness holds and guides them even then. Sin and death and hell shall never o'er us final triumph gain; God is love, so love for ever o'er the universe must reign. Topics: General Hymns God the Father Used With Tune: HYFRYDOL

God Has Chosen What Is Foolish

Author: Richard Leach Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 God has chosen what is foolish, what is easy to despise, to save us from our own wisdom and to shame what we call wise. God has chosen what is weakest, what cannot be counted on, to save us from our own power and to shame what we call strong. 2 What is strong by human measure? War and wealth seem strong and real. What is weak? A human body, met by fists and wood and steel. Yet the body of our Jesus has defied the cross and grave. God has cherished what is fragile, come in Christ to mend and save. 3 God has chosen what is nothing to be something in his sight, and to send into the shadows those who seem to own the light. Some things seeming now the greatest will be dream-like, fading fast. God has chosen what is empty to be filled with joy at last. Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr. (b. 1944) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 3 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Gracious Spirit, give your servants joy to set sin’s captives free, hope to heal the brokenhearted, peace to share love’s liberty. Through us bring your balm of gladness to the wounded and oppressed; help us claim and show God’s favor as a people called and blessed. 2 Word made flesh, who gave up glory to become our great high priest, taking on our human nature to redeem the last and least: let your courage and compassion shape and guide our ministries; as our Savior and our Shepherd, lead us to the truth that frees. 3 Loving God, who birthed creation from the nothingness of space, kindling life where all was empty, turning chaos into grace: when we feel confused and fruitless, dawn upon our restless night; give us faith’s imagination, hope’s renewing, love’s delight. 4 Triune God, eternal Being, never ending, unbegun, boundless grace and perfect justice, righteous and forgiving One: so enfold us in your mercy that our wills and yours unite; through us may the world behold you, find your love, your truth, your light. God Has Spoken to All People

Author: Mary Jackson Cathey Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: God has spoken to all people in each age, throughout the earth, in creation and the Scriptures, then through Jesus' human birth. God who spoke at life's beginning speaks again with each new day, bidding us to hear and follow words of life that mark Christ's way. Triune God who never leaves us, maker, Savior, Light and Guide, through the water of baptism our new life has been supplied. Bound by water and the Spirit, sealed and marked, empowered by grace, known by name as Christ's disciples we can now the world embrace. Sovereign God of every person, different tongues and cultures too, many races, many talents, many skins of varied hue, you have called us to your service, help us teach and preach and show virtues, practices and knowledge so that seeds of faith will grow. God eternal, everlasting, speak again that all may hear, tell of love and hope and promise, bringing faith to banish fear. Send us out to tell your story that the church will grow and thrive, so all people hear your message and forever be alive.
