It came upon the midnight clear

Author: Edmund Hamilton Sears (1810-1876) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #70 (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Hymnal Title: Ancient and Modern Lyrics: 1 It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: 'Through all the earth, goodwill and peace from heaven's all-gracious king!' The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing. 2 With sorrow brought by sin and strife the world has suffered long and, since the angels sang, have passed two thousand years of wrong: the nations, still at war, hear not the love-song which they bring: O hush the noise and cease the strife, to hear the angels sing! 3 And those whose journey now is hard, whose hope is burning low, who tread the rocky path of life with painful steps and slow: O listen to the news of love which makes the heavens ring! O rest beside the weary road and hear the angels sing! 4 And still the days are hastening on — by prophets seen of old — towards the fulness of the time when comes the age foretold: then earth and heaven renewed shall see the prince of peace, their king; and all the world repeat the song which now the angels sing. While shepherds watched their flocks by night

Author: Nahum Tate Hymnal: Book of Worship with Hymns and Tunes #225 (1899) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Hymnal Title: Book of Worship with Hymns and Tunes Lyrics: 1 While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground; The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around. "Fear not," said he,--for mighty dread Had seized their troubled mind,-- "Glad tidings of great joy I bring, To you and all mankind. 2 "To you, in David's town this day, Is born of David's line The Saviour, who is Christ, the Lord, And this shall be the sign:-- The heavenly babe you there shall find To human view displayed, All simply wrapped in swathing bands, And in a manger laid." 5 Thus spoke the seraph--and forthwith Appeared a shining throng Of angels, praising God, who thus Addressed their joyful song:-- "All glory be to God on high, And to the earth be peace; Good-will will henceforth from heaven to men Begin, and never cease!" My Church! My Church! My dear old Church

Author: Anon. Hymnal: Book of Worship with Hymns and Tunes #286 (1899) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Hymnal Title: Book of Worship with Hymns and Tunes Lyrics: 1 My Church! My Church! My dear old Church My fathers’ and my own! On prophets, and apostles built, And Christ the cornerstone; All else beside, by storm or tide, May yet be overthrown; But not my Church, my dear old Church, My fathers’ and my own. 2 My Church! My Church! My dear old Church! My glory and my pride! Firm in the faith Immanuel taught, She holds no faith beside, Upon this rock, ‘gainst every shock, Though gates of hell assail, She stands secure, with promise sure, “They never shall prevail.” 3 My Church! My Church! My dear old Church! I love her ancient name; And God forbid a child of hers Should ever do her shame; Her mother care I'll ever share; Her child I am alone, Till He who gave me to her arms, Shall call me to His own. 4 My Church! My Church! My dear old Church! Thy child would add a vow To that whose token once was signed Upon his infant brow; Her mother care I'll ever share, Her child I am alone. My Church shall yet be dear to me, My fathers' and my own. Amen. O God in Whom All Life Begins

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr. Hymnal: Celebrating Grace Hymnal #286 (2010) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Hymnal Title: Celebrating Grace Hymnal Lyrics: 1 O God in whom all life begins, who births the seed to fruit, bestow Your blessing on our lives; here let Your love find root. Bring forth in us the Spirit’s gifts of patience, joy, and peace; deliver us from numbing fear, and grant our faith increase. 2 Unite in mutual ministry our minds and hands and hearts that we may have the grace to seek the power Your peace imparts. So let our varied gifts combine to glorify Your name that in all things by word and deed we may your love proclaim. 3 Through tears and laughter, grief and joy, enlarge our trust and care; so bind us in community that we may risk and dare. Be with us when we gather here to worship, sing, and pray, then send us forth in power and faith to live the words we say. It came upon the midnight clear

Author: Edmund Hamilton Sears (1810-1876) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #303 (2005) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Hymnal Title: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Lyrics: 1 It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, good will to you from heaven's all-gracious King!" The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing. 2 Still through the cloven skies they come, with peaceful wings unfurled: and still their heavenly music floats o'er all the weary world; above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing, and ever o'er its Babel-sounds the blessèd angels sing. 3 But with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long: beneath the angels' hymn have rolled two thousand years of wrong: and warring humankind hears not the love-song which they bring: oh, hush the noise and still the strife to hear the angels sing. 4 And you, beneath life's crushing load whose forms are bending low, who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow, look now! for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing: oh, rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing. 5 For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophet bards foretold, when, with the ever-rolling years, still dawns the Age of Gold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendours fling, and all the world give back the song which now the angels sing. O God, Thy Power is Wonderful

Author: F. W. Faber Hymnal: Gloria Deo #75 (1901) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Hymnal Title: Gloria Deo Lyrics: 1 O God, Thy power is wonderful, Thy glory passing bright; Thy wisdom, with its deep on deep, A rapture to the sight. I see Thee in th’eternal years In glory all alone, Ere round Thine uncreated fires Created light had shone. 2 I see Thee walk in Eden’s shade, I see Thee all through time; Thy patience and compassion seem New attributes sublime. I see Thee when the doom is o’er, And outworn time is done, Still, still incomprehensible, O God, yet not alone. 3 Angelic spirits, countless souls, Of Thee have drunk their fill; And to eternity will drink Thy joy and glory still. O little heart of mine! shall pain Or sorrow make thee moan, When all this God is all for thee, A Father all thine own? Topics: God Power of Languages: English Tune Title: NOEL

Help us to know your Spirit still is making all things new. 2 O God, who calls your people out to venture and to dare, to plumb the bleak abyss of doubt and find you even there: when we despair in wandering through wastes of empty lies, refresh us with the living spring of hope that never dies. 3 O God of covenant and law, revealed in cloud and flame, your mighty deeds evoke our awe; we dare not speak your name.
