O little town of Bethlehem

Author: Bp. Phillips Brooks, 1835-1893 Hymnal: Methodist Hymn and Tune Book #126 (1917) Topics: Bethlehem Christ born in Lyrics: 1 O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie; Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by: Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee to-night. 2 For Christ is born of Mary; And gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King, And peace to men on earth! 3 How silently, how silently, The wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heaven: No ear may hear His coming; But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him, still The dear Christ enters in. 4 O holy Child of Bethlehem, Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in; Be born in us to-day, We hear the heavenly angels The great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord, Immanuel. If I Could Visit Bethlehem

Author: Brian Wren Hymnal: Worship and Song #3063 (2011) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Bethlehem; Bethlehem Lyrics: 1 If I could visit Bethlehem what presents would I bring? If I could see what happened then, what would I say or sing? I wouldn't take a modern toy but gold to pay for bread, some wine to give his parents joy and wool to warm his bed. 2 I'd learn some simple words to speak in Aramaic tongues. I'd cradle him, and kiss his cheek, and say, "I'm glad you've come." If Mary asked me who I was and what her child would do, I wouldn't talk about the cross or tell he all I knew. 3 I'd say, "He'll never hurt or kill, and joy will follow tears. We'll know his name and love him still in twenty hundred years." I cannot visit Bethlehem but what I can, I'll do: I'll love you, Jesus, as my friend, and give my life to you. How Far It Was to Bethlehem

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: Faith That Lets Us Sing #42 (2017) Topics: Christmas Journey to Bethlehem Lyrics: 1 How far it was to Bethlehem for Mary, great with child, and Joseph, trusted with the one upon whom God had smiled! From Nazareth to Jericho, then up a long, steep road, they journeyed on to David’s town with their most precious load. 2 They could not find a place to stay save in a stable stall, and there amid the animals was born the Lord of all. The heavens burst with angel-song to shepherds on the hill: “The Christ is born and peace will come to people of good will.” 3 The shepherds hurried off to find this new-born baby boy. “The Promised One is here, at last! Our hearts are filled with joy!” They knelt before his manger bed, and gazed upon the face that showed in its sweet countenance Love’s gift of peace and grace. 4 How far it is to Bethlehem for us who live today, who bear the burdens of our doubts and do not trust Love’s way. God, as we journey on in life, let angel-songs ne’er cease, that, like the shepherds, we may find in Christ a hope for peace. Scripture: Luke 2:4-5 Languages: English Tune Title: JERICHO ROAD

O Sing a Song of Bethlehem

Author: Louis F. Benson Hymnal: The Worshiping Church #192 (1990) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Biblical Places Bethlehem, Nazareth, Galilee Lyrics: 1 O sing a song of Bethlehem, of shepherds watching there, and of the news that came to them from angels in the air: the light that shone on Bethlehem fills all the world today; of Jesus’ birth and peace on earth the angels sing alway. 2 O sing a song of Nazareth, of sunny days of joy, O sing of fragrant flowers’ breath, and of the sinless Boy: for now the flowers of Nazareth in every heart may grow; now spreads the fame of his dear name on all the winds that blow. 3 O sing a song of Galilee, of lake and woods and hill, of him who walked upon the sea and bade the waves be still: for though, like waves on Galilee, dark seas of trouble roll, when faith has heard the Master’s word, falls peace upon the soul. 4 O sing a song of Calvary, its glory and dismay; of him who hung upon the tree, and took our sins away: for he who died on Calvary is risen from the grave, and Christ, our Lord, by heaven adored, is mighty now to save. Kirke White, 1785-1806 Hymnal: Methodist Hymn and Tune Book #127 (1917) Topics: Bethlehem Star of; Star Of Bethlehem Lyrics: 1 When, marshalled on the nightly plain, The glittering hosts bestud the sky, One star alone of all the train Can fix the sinner's wandering eye. 2 Hark! hark! to God the chorus breaks From every host, from every gem; But one alone the Saviour speaks, It is the Star of Bethlehem. 3 In storm and darkness, once I feared, And, death-struck, ceased the tide to stem, When suddenly a star appeared, It was the Star of Bethlehem. 4 It is my guide, my light, my all; It bids my dark forebodings cease; And through life's storm and danger's thrall, It leads me to the port of peace. 5 Thus, safely moored, my perils o'er, I'll sing first in night's diadem, For ever, and for evermore, The Star! the Star of Bethlehem! When, marshaled on the nightly plain

Author: Kirke White Hymnal: The Voice of Praise #159 (1873) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: The Star of Bethlehem Lyrics: 1 When, marshaled on the nightly plain, The glittering hosts bestud the sky, One star alone, of all the train, Can fix the sinner's wandering eye. 2 Hark! hark! to God the chorus breaks, From every host, from every gem; But one alone the Saviour speaks,-- It is the Star of Bethlehem. 3 Once on the raging seas I rode, The storm was loud, the night was dark-- The ocean yawned--and rudely blowed The wind, that tossed my foundering bark. 4 Deep horror then my vitals froze, Death-struck, I ceased the tide to stem;-- When suddenly a star arose,-- It was the Star of Bethlehem. 5 It was my guide, my light, my all; It bad my dark forebodings cease; And, through the storm, and danger's thrall, It led me to the port of peace. 6 Now safely moored, my perils o'er, I'll sing, first in night's diadem, Forever and for evermore, The Star--the Star of Bethlehem!
