Psalm 139 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 325 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139 First Line: Lord, thou hast searched and seen me through Lyrics: Lord, thou hast searched and seen me through, Thine eye commands with piercing view My rising and my resting hours, My heart and flesh with all their powers. My thoughts, before they are my own, Are to my God distinctly known; He knows the words I mean to speak Ere from my op'ning lips they break. Within thy circling power I stand; On every side I find thy hand; Awake, asleep, at home, abroad, I am surrounded still with God. Amazing knowledge, vast and great! What large extent! what lofty height! My soul, with all the powers I boast, Is in the boundless prospect lost. O may these thoughts possess my breast, Where'er I rove, where'er I rest! Nor let my weaker passions dare Consent to sin, for God is there. Could I so false, so faithless prove, To quit thy service and thy love, Where, Lord, could I thy presence shun. Or from thy dreadful glory run? If up to heav'n I take my flight, 'Tis there thou dwell'st enthroned in light Or dive to hell, there vengeance reigns, And Satan groans beneath thy chains. If, mounted on a morning ray, I fly beyond the western sea, Thy swifter hand would first arrive, And there arrest thy fugitive. Or should I try to shun thy sight Beneath the spreading veil of night, One glance of thine, one piercing ray, Would kindle darkness into day. O may these thoughts possess my breast, Where'er I rove, where'er I rest! Nor let my weaker passions dare Consent to sin, for God is there. The veil of night is no disguise, No screen from thy all-searching eyes; Thy hand can seize thy foes as soon Through midnight shades as blazing noon. Midnight and noon in this agree, Great God, they're both alike to thee; Not death can hide what God will spy, And hell lies naked to his eye. O may these thoughts possess my breast, Where'er I rove, where'er I rest! Nor let my weaker passions dare Consent to sin, for God is there. Topics: Evening psalm; Evidences of sincerity; Obedience sincere; Sincerity; Examination or evidences of grace; Grace its evidences, or self-examination; Self-examination or evidences of grace; Trial of our hearts; Daily Devotion; Midnight thoughts; God his wisdom in his works; Holiness professed; Professions of sincerity and repentance, etc; All-seeing God; Appeal to God concerning our sincerity; God All-seeing; God heart-searching; Heart known to God; Infants; Man wonderful formation; Mercies innumerable; Nature of man

Psalm 139 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 251 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139 First Line: In all my vast concerns with thee Lyrics: In all my vast concerns with thee, In vain my soul would try To shun thy presence, Lord, or flee The notice of thine eye. Thy all-surrounding sight surveys My rising and my rest, My public walks, my private ways, And secrets of my breast. My thoughts lie open to the Lord Before they're formed within; And ere my lips pronounce the word He knows the sense I mean. O wondrous knowledge, deep and high! Where can a creature hide? Within thy circling arms I lie, Beset on every side. So let thy grace surround me still, And like a bulwark prove, To guard my soul from every ill, Secured by sovereign love. Lord, where shall guilty souls retire, Forgotten and unknown? In hell they meet thy dreadful fire, In heav'n thy glorious throne. Should I suppress my vital breath To 'scape the wrath divine, Thy voice would break the bars of death, And make the grave resign. If winged with beams of morning light I fly beyond the west, Thy hand, which must support my flight, Would soon betray my rest. If o'er my sins I think to draw The curtains of the night, Those flaming eyes that guard thy law Would turn the shades to light. The beams of noon, the midnight hour, Are both alike to thee O may I ne'er provoke that power From which I cannot flee.

Thou Lord, by strictest Search hast known

Appears in 86 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139 Lyrics: 1 Thou, Lord, by strictest Search hast known 2 My rising up and lying down; My secret Thoughts are known to thee, Known long before conceiv'd by me. 3 Thine Eye my Bed and Path surveys, My publick Haunts and private Ways; 4 Thou know'st what 'tis my Lips would vent, My yet unutter'd words intent. 5 Surrounded by thy Pow'r I stand, On ev'ry Side I find thy Hand. 6 O Skill, for human Reach too high! Too dazzling bright for mortal Eye! 7 O could I so perfidious be, To think of once deserting thee, Where, Lord, could I thy Influence shun? Or whither from thy Presence run? 8 If up to Heav'n I take my Flight, 'Tis there thou dwell'st enthron'd in Light, Or sink to Hell's infernal Plains, 'Tis there Almighty Vengeance reigns. 9 If I the Morning's Wings could gain, And fly beyond the Western Main, 10 Thy swifter Hand would first arrive, And there arrest thy Fugitive. 11 Or should I try to shun thy Sight Beneath the sable Wings of Night; One Glance from thee, one piercing Ray Would kindle Darkness into Day. 12 The Veil of Night is no Disguise, No Screen from thy all-searching Eyes: Thro' Midnight Shades thou find'st thy Way, As in the blazing Noon of Day. 13 Thou know'st the Texture of my Heart, My Reins and ev'ry vital part; Each single Thread, in Nature's Loom, By thee was cover'd in the Womb. 14 I'll praise Thee from whose Hands I came, A work of such a curious Frame; The Wonders thou in me hast shown, My soul with grateful Joy must own. 15 Thine Eyes my Substance did survey, while yet a lifeless Mass it lay, In secret how exactly wrought, E'er from its dark Inclosure brought. 16 Thou didst the shapeless Embrio see, Its Parts were registred by Thee: Thou saw'st the daily Growth they took, Form'd by the Model of thy Book. 17 Let me acknowledge too, O God, That since this Maze of Life I trod, Thy Thoughts of Love to me surmount The Pow'r of Numbers to recount. 18 Far sooner could I reckon o'er The Sands upon the Ocean's Shore: Each Morn revising what I've done, I find th' Account but new begun. 19 The Wicked thou shalt slay, O God: Depart from me, ye Men of Blood, 20 Whose Tongues Heav'n's Majesty profane, And take th' Almighty's Name in vain. 21 Lord, hate not I their impious Crew, Who thee with Enmity pursue? And does not Grief my Heart oppress, When Reprobates thy Law transgress? 22 Who practise Enmity to Thee, Shall utmost Hatred have from me; Such Men I utterly detest, As if they were my Foes profest. 23,24 Search, try, O God, my Thoughts and Heart, If Mischief lurks in any Part; Correct me where I go astray, And guide me in thy perfect Way.

Thy hand my heart and reins possessed Where unborn nature grew; Thy wisdom all my features traced, And all my members drew. Thine eye with nicest care surveyed The growth of every part; Till the whole scheme thy thoughts had laid Was copied by thy art. Psalm 139 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 35 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139 First Line: 'Twas from thy hand, my God, I came Lyrics: 'Twas from thy hand, my God, I came, A work of such a curious frame In me thy fearful wonders shine, And each proclaims thy skill divine. Thine eyes did all my limbs survey, Which yet in dark confusion lay; Thou saw'st the daily growth they took, Formed by the model of thy book. By thee my growing parts were named, And what thy sovereign counsels framed- The breathing lungs, the beating heart- Was copied with unerring art. At last, to show my Maker's name, God stamped his image on my frame, And in some unknown moment joined The finished members to the mind. There the young seeds of thought began, And all the passions of the man: Great God, our infant nature pays Immortal tribute to thy praise. Lord, since in my advancing age I've acted on life's busy stage, Thy thoughts of love to me surmount The power of numbers to recount. I could survey the ocean o'er, And count each sand that makes the shore, Before my swiftest thoughts could trace The num'rous wonders of thy grace. These on my heart are still impressed, With these I give my eyes to rest; And at my waking hour I find God and his love possess my mind. Guard now the lips from sin, the hearts from shame, that in this house have called upon your name. 3 Grant us your peace, Lord, through the coming night; turn all our darkness to your perfect light. Then, while we sleep, our hope and strength renew, for dark and light are both alike to you. 4 Grant us your peace throughout our earthly life: comfort in sorrow, courage in the strife. Forth in Thy Name, O Lord, I Go

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 346 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139:1 Lyrics: 1 Forth in thy name, O Lord, I go, my daily labor to pursue; thee, only thee, resolv'd to know, in all I think or speak or do. 2 The task thy wisdom hath assigned O let me cheerfully fulfill; in all my works thy presence find and prove thy good and perfect will. 3 Preserve me from my calling's snare, and hide my simple heart above. Above the thorns of choking care, the gilded baits of worldly love. 4 Thee I may I set at my right hand, whose eyes my inmost substance see, and labor on at thy command, and offer all my works to thee. 5 Give me to bear thy easy yoke, and ev'ry moment watch and pray; and still to things eternal look, and hasten to thy glorious day; 6 for thee delightfully employ whate'er thy bounteous grace hath giv'n. and run my course with even joy, and closely walk with thee to heav'n. Psalm 139: O Lord, thou hast me search'd and known

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 19 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139 First Line: O Lord, thou hast me search'd and known Lyrics: 1O Lord, thou hast me search’d and known. 2Thou know’st my sitting down, And rising up; yea, all my thoughts afar to thee are known. 3My footsteps, and my lying down, thou compassest always; Thou also most entirely art acquaint with all my ways. 4For in my tongue, before I speak, not any word can be, But altogether, lo, O Lord, it is well known to thee. 5Behind, before, thou hast beset, and laid on me thine hand. 6Such knowledge is too strange for me, too high to understand. 7From thy Sp’rit whither shall I go? or from thy presence fly? 8Ascend I heav’n, lo, thou art there; there, if in hell I lie. 9Take I the morning wings, and dwell in utmost parts of sea; 10Ev’n there, Lord, shall thy hand me lead, thy right hand hold shall me. 11If I do say that darkness shall me cover from thy sight, Then surely shall the very night about me be as light. 12Yea, darkness hideth not from thee, but night doth shine as day: To thee the darkness and the light are both alike alway. 13For thou possessed hast my reins, and thou hast cover’d me, When I within my mother’s womb inclosed was by thee. 14Thee will I praise; for fearfully and strangely made I am; Thy works are marv’llous, and right well my soul doth know the same. 15My substance was not hid from thee, when as in secret I Was made; and in earth’s lowest parts was wrought most curiously. 16Thine eyes my substance did behold, yet being unperfect; And in the volume of thy book my members all were writ; Which after in continuance were fashion’d ev’ry one, When as they yet all shapeless were, and of them there was none. 17How precious also are thy thoughts, O gracious God, to me! And in their sum how passing great and numberless they be! 18If I should count them, than the sand they more in number be: What time soever I awake, I ever am with thee. 19Thou, Lord, wilt sure the wicked slay: hence from me bloody men. 20Thy foes against thee loudly speak, and take thy name in vain. 21Do not I hate all those, O Lord, that hatred bear to thee? With those that up against thee rise can I but grieved be? 22With perfect hatred them I hate, my foes I them do hold. 23Search me, O God, and know my heart, try me, my thoughts unfold: 24And see if any wicked way there be at all in me; And in thine everlasting way to me a leader be.
