The church's one foundation

Author: S. J. Stone, 1839-1900 Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 856 hymnals Scripture: Habakkuk 1:2 Lyrics: 1 The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the word: from heaven he came and sought her to be his holy Bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. 2 Elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth, her charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth; one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses with every grace endued. *3 Though with a scornful wonder men see her sore opprest, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distrest; yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, 'How long?' And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. 4 'Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace for evermore; till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest. 5 Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. Topics: Third Sunday Before Lent Year A; Proper 5 Year C; Proper 16 Year A Used With Tune: AURELIA

How Long, O God, Will My Prayers Be in Vain?

Author: Barbara Hamm Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Habakkuk 1:2-4 Lyrics: 1 How long, O God, will my prayers be in vain? Why must I languish in sorrow and pain? Do not abandon a child you have made; you are my shelter, my solace and shade. 2 When evil prospers and hope is long gone, do not forsake me, your presence withdrawn. Shield and protect those who call on your name; you are my God, and your blessing I claim. 3 Early and late will my tongue sing your praise; you will uphold me the length of my days. You are a stronghold for all the oppressed; hear us, O God! Let your people be blessed. Topics: Grief; Healing; Lament Used With Tune: LAND OF MERCY

Forgive, Forgive Us, Holy God

Author: Shirley Erena Murray Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Habakkuk 1:2-4 First Line: Forgive us, forgive us, holy God! Lyrics: 1 Forgive, forgive us, holy God! Your children call on you to hear! Our blood is on each other’s hands, we die from hunger, lies and fear. 2 Forgive us that our souls are numb to scenes of terror, screams of pain; that while we pray “Your kingdom come” our world is still a battle plain. 3 Forgive the minds no longer shocked by homeless poor, by lives abused, forgive us that the earth is stacked with weapons waiting to be used. 4 Forgive us that our household gods are self and safety, private need, forgive us all our fitful prayers, the token gift, the token deed. 5 Give us this day the bread of peace, the hands to share a common good, the hearts to ache for justice's sake, the will to stand where Jesus stood. Topics: Abuse; Forgiveness From God; Housing; Justice Economic; Lent; Peace and Justice; Peace Conflict and War; Stewardship Used With Tune: ROUGH SEAS
