O praise the Lord, for He is good

Appears in 14 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 118 Lyrics: 1,2 O praise the Lord, for He is good, his Mercies ne'er decay: That his kind Favours ever last let thankful Isr'el say. 3,4 Their Sense of his eternal Love, let Aaron's House express; And that it never fails, let all that fear the Lord, confess. 5 To God I made my humble Moan, with Troubles quite opprest; And he releas'd me from my Straits, and granted my Request. 6 Since therefore God does on my Side so graciously appear, Why should the vain Attempts of Men possess my Soul with Fear? 7 Since God with those that aid my Cause vouchsafes my Part to take, To all my Foes, I need not doubt, a just Return to make. 8,9 For better 'tis to trust in God, and have the Lord our Friend, Than on the greatest human Pow'r for Safety to depend. 10,11 Tho' many Nations closely leagu'd, did oft beset me round: yet by his boundless Pow'r sustain'd, I did their Strength confound. 12 They swarm'd like Bees, and yet their Rage, was but a short-liv'd Blaze; For whilst on God I still rely'd, I vanquish'd them with Ease. 13 When all united press'd me hard, in hopes to make me fall; The Lord vouchsaf'd to take my Part, and sav'd me from them all. 14 The Honour of my strange Escape to Him alone belongs; He is my Saviour and my Strength, he only claims my Songs. 15 Joy fills the Dwelling of the Just, whom God has sav'd from Harm; For wond'rous Things are brought to pass by his Almighty Arm. 16 He, by his own resistless Pow'r, has endless Honour won; The saving Strength of his right Hand, amazing Works has done. 17 God will not suffer me to fall, but still prolongs my Days; That by declaring all his Works I may advance his Praise. 18 When God has sorely me chastiz'd, till quite of Hopes bereav'd, His Mercy from the Gates of Death my fainting Life repriev'd. 19 Then open wide the Temple Gates to which the Just repair, That I may enter in and praise my great Deliv'rer there. 20,21 Within those Gates of God's Abode to which the righteous press, Since Thou hast heard, and set me safe, thy holy Name I'll bless. 22,23 That which the Builders once refus'd, is now the Corner Stone. This is the wond'rous Work of God, the Work of God alone. 24,25 This Day is God's; let all the Land exalt their chearful Voice; Lord, we beseech thee, save us now, and make us still rejoice. 26 Him that approaches in God's Name, let all th' Assembly bless; "We that belong to God's own House "have wish'd you good Success." 27 God is the Lord, through whom we all both Light and Comfort find; Fast to the Altar's Horns with Cords the chosen Victim bind. 28 Thou art my Lord, O God, and still I'll praise thy holy Name; Because thou only art my God, I'll celebrate thy Fame. 29 O then with me give Thanks to God, who still does gracious prove; And let the Tribute of our Praise be endless as his Love.

O praise the Lord, for he is good

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 6 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 118 Lyrics: 1 O praise the Lord, for he is good; his mercy lasteth ever. 2 Let those who are of Israel say, His mercy faileth never. 3 Now let the house of Aaron say, His mercy lasteth ever. 4 Let those that fear the Lord now say, His mercy faileth never. 5 I in distress called on the Lord; the Lord did answer me: he in a large place did me set, from trouble made me free. 6 The Lord himself is on my side, I will not be afraid; for any thing that man can do I shall not be dismayed. 7 The Lord doth take my part with them that help to succour me; therefore on those that do me hate I my desire shall see. 8 'Tis better in the Lord to trust than trust in man's defence; 9 better trust in the Lord than make princes our confidence. 10 The nations, joining all in one, did compass me about: but in the Lord’s most holy name I shall them all root out. 11 They compassed me about; I say, They compassed me about: but in the Lord’s most holy name I shall them all root out. 12 Like bees they compassed me about; they're quenched like unto thorns that flame: for I will surely them destroy, in the Lord’s holy name. 13 Thou hast sore thrust that I might fall, the Lord hath succoured me; 14 the Lord my Saviour is become, my strength and song is he. 15 In dwellings of the just the voice of joy and health shall be; the right hand of the mighty Lord doth ever valiantly. 16 The right hand of the mighty Lord exalted is on high; the right hand of the mighty Lord doth ever valiantly. 17 I shall not die, but live, and shall Jehovah's works make known. 18 The Lord hath me chastised sore, but not to death brought down. 19 O set ye open unto me the gates of righteousness; then will I enter into them, and I the Lord will bless. 20 This is the gate of God, by it the just shall enter in. 21 Thee will I praise, for thou me heard’st and hast my safety been. 22 That stone is made head corner-stone, which builders did despise: 23 this is the doing of the Lord, and wondrous in our eyes. 24 This day the Lord hath made, in it we’ll joy triumphantly. 25 Save, Lord, I pray thee, Lord; I pray, send thou prosperity. 26 Blessed in the Lord's great name is he that cometh us among; we bless you from the house which doth unto the Lord belong. 27 God is the Lord, who unto us hath made light to arise: bind ye unto the altar’s horns with cords the sacrifice. 28 Thou art my God, I’ll thee exalt; my God, I will thee praise. 29 Praise ye the Lord, for he is good: his mercy lasts always. O Praise the Lord, for He Is Good (118)

Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 118 First Line: O praise the Lord, for He is good Lyrics: 1. O praise the Lord, for He is good, Let all in Heav’n above And all His saints on earth proclaim His everlasting love. In my distress I called on God; In grace He answered me, Removed my bonds, enlarged my place, From trouble set me free. 2. The Lord with me, I will not fear Though human might oppose; The Lord my helper, I shall be Triumphant o’er my foes. No trust in men, or kings of men, Can confidence afford, But they are strong, and sure their trust, Whose hope is in the Lord. 3. Though nations compass me about, Like swarming hosts of sin, Yet in the name of God the Lord I shall the victory win. The Lord has helped and kept me safe When foes were fierce and strong; The Lord my Savior is become, He is my strength and song. 4. Salvation’s joyful song is heard Where’er the righteous dwell; For them God’s hand is strong to save And doeth all things well. I shall not die, but live to tell The wonders of the Lord; He has not giv’n my soul to death, But chastened and restored. O praise the LORD, for He is good

Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 118 Lyrics: 1 O praise the LORD, for He is good, his mercies ne'er decay: 2 And that his mercies ever last, let thankful Isr'el say. 3 Their sense of his eternal love let Aaron's house declare: 4 And that it fails not, let all say, all who Jehovah fear. 5 To the almighty JAH I cry'd in my extreme distress; And JAH, on high me heard, and brought into this happy place. 6 The LORD is for me; I'll not fear what man to me can do: 7 The LORD is with my helping friends; and I will face my foe. 8 'Tis better on the LORD to trust, than trust in man's defence; 9 Better to trust the LORD than place in princes confidence. [2 Part] 10 All nations round environ'd me, design'd my fatal fall; But in JEHOVAH's mighty name I overcame them all. 11 They compass'd me, again, again, and try'd my utter fall; But in JEHOVAH's mighty name I did subdue them all. 12 Like angry bees they round me swarm'd, rag'd like a thorny flame; Yet quenched and destroyed were, but in JEHOVAH's name. 13 When they push'd hard to beat me down, JEHOVAH helped me. 14 The mighty JAH my strength, my song, and saving help is He. 15 In tents of righteous men is heard the voice of health and joy: The Lord's right hand gives mighty strength and works most mightily, 16 JEHOVAH by his mighty pow'r advances them on high: The Lord's right hand gives mighty strength and works most mightily. [3 Part] 17 I shall not die, but longer live, and gratefully declare The works of our almighty JAH, how wonderful they are. 18 For JAH hath sorely me chastiz'd, till just of life bereav'd: But kindly from the gates of death, my fainting life repriev'd. 19 O set wide open now to me the gates of righteousness; And I will enter them, and there the praise of JAH confess. 20 This gate, JEHOVAH's blessed gate, into his house doth lead: The righteous love to enter in; and entering in are glad. 21 Among these righteous ones I'll be, and praise on Thee bestow; For Thou hast heard me, and to Thee I my salvation owe. 22 The stone the builders did despise, and utterly disclaim, Is now the chief and corner stone, which bares up all the frame. 23 This work JEHOVAH's mighty pow'r hath brought to pass alone; And we in great amazement stand, to see what He hath done. [4 Part] 24 This is the great and blessed day the LORD himself hath made; And we will all therein rejoice, and be exceeding glad. 25 JEHOVAH we now Thee beseech SALVATION TO AFFORD: We humbly Thee entreat now send prosperity, O LORD! 26 He that comes in JEHOVAH's name O let him blessed be. Out of JEHOVAH's house to you a blessing wish do we. 27 God is JEHOVAH, who to us hath made his light to rise: Bind therefore to his altar's horns with cords, our sacrifice. 28 Thou art my God, and I'll proclaim for evermore thy praise: Thou art my God, and thy great name my thankful song shall raise, 29 O to JEHOVAH give ye thanks; immensely good is He, Because his mercy doth endure ev'n to eternity.
