Psalm 95

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.204 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Delaying sinners warned First Line: Sing to the Lord Jehovah's name Lyrics: Sing to the Lord Jehovah's name, And in his strength rejoice; When his salvation is our theme, Exalted be our voice. With thanks approach his awful sight, And psalms of honor sing; The Lord's a God of boundless might, The whole creation's King. Let princes hear, let angels know, How mean their natures seem, Those gods on high and gods below, When once compared with him. Earth, with its caverns dark and deep, Lies in his spacious hand; He fixed the seas what bounds to keep, And where the hills must stand. Come, and with humble souls adore, Come, kneel before his face O may the creatures of his power Be children of his grace! Now is the time; he bends his ear, And waits for your request; Come, lest he rouse his wrath and swear, "Ye shall not see my rest." Scripture: Psalm 95 Languages: English

Psalm 95

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.205 (1806) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Delaying sinners warned First Line: Come, sound his praise abroad Lyrics: Come, sound his praise abroad, And hymns of glory sing; Jehovah is the sovereign God, The universal King. He formed the deeps unknown; He gave the seas their bound; The wat'ry worlds are all his own, And all the solid ground. Come, worship at his throne; Come, bow before the Lord: We are his works, and not our own; He formed us by his word. Today attend his voice, Nor dare provoke his rod; Come, like the people of his choice, And own your gracious God. But if your ears refuse The language of his grace, And hearts grow hard, like stubborn Jews, That unbelieving race; The Lord, in vengeance dressed, Will lift his hand and swear, "You that despise my promised rest Shall have no portion there." Psalm 95

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.206 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Delaying sinners warned First Line: Come, let our voices join to raise Lyrics: Come, let our voices join to raise A sacred song of solemn praise; God is a sovereign King, rehearse His honors in exalted verse. Come, let our souls address the Lord, Who framed our natures with his word; He is our Shepherd; we the sheep His mercy chose, his pastures keep. Come, let us hear his voice today, The counsels of his love obey; Nor let our hardened hearts renew The sins and plagues that Isr'el knew. Isr'el, that saw his works of grace, Yet tempt their Maker to his face; A faithless, unbelieving brood, That tired the patience of their God. Thus saith the Lord: "How false they prove Forget my power, abuse my love! Since they despise my rest, I swear, Their feet shall never enter there." [Look back, my soul, with holy dread, And view those ancient rebels dead; Attend the offered grace today, Nor lose the blessing by delay. Seize the kind promise while it waits, And march to Zion's heav'nly gates: Believe, and take the promised rest; Obey, and be for ever blest.] Scripture: Psalm 95:1-3 Languages: English

A sinner lamenting the delay of divine grace

Hymnal: The Hartford Selection of Hymns from the Most Approved Authors #CLXIX (1799) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Sinner Lamenting delay of grace; Sinner Lamenting delay of grace First Line: Long have I walk'd this dreary road Lyrics: 1 Long have I walk'd this dreary road, Beset with darkness round; Nor seen nor heard a smiling God, Nor one bright moment found. 2 Others, who once did join my speech, And mourn'd in painful lay, Now mounting up with rapture, stretch To seize the heav'nly day. 3 Far left behind to feel my woe, With harden'd heart to groan, Each pray'r, each struggle sinks me low, Each breath repeats my moan. 4 The lengthen'd day, the gloomy night, Draw fast the bands of grief; Sometimes despair o'erclouds my sight, And says, there's no relief. 5 Then conscience thunders, Sinai flames, I try again to rise; The trial fails, and conscience blames My pray'rs, my tears, my cries. 6 If hope perchance a moment gleams, And says, Christ's blood was split; My heart of sin beclouds the beams, And seals my death and guilt. 7 'Tis thus perplex'd, forlorn and lost, I spend my weary days; No Jesus comes my hopes are crost, While others sing and praise. Ye careless souls will ye delay!

Hymnal: Church Hymn Book #CCLXXIV (1816) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Delay of Repentance Lyrics: 1 Ye careless souls will ye delay! And trifle precious time away; Why will ye spend your days of grace In vanity and idleness? 2 Why will ye forfeit future joys? For sale of mean and empty toys; And slight that which would make you blest, And place your souls in peace to rest. 3 Will ye abuse what God doth give? The precious time wherein ye live; The time wherein ye may secure, Your happiness for evermore. 4 Who would neglect to gain the prize, When all at hand before one's eyes: And yet neglect and still delay, Until the prize be took away. 5 Such is the case with careless souls, They act the part of stupid fools; They forfeit life, they forfeit heav'n, That freely would to them be giv'n. 6 To day, while ye do hear his voice, Let his great offers by your choice; Let your repentance be sincere, To call on God while he is near. 7 Delays are dangerous you know; Your heart and conscience tell you so; Much better you would watch and pray, Than trifle precious time away. Life is the Time to serve the Lord

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #I.LXXXVIII (1766) Topics: Delay of Conversion Lyrics: 1 Life is the Time to serve the Lord, The Time t' insure the great Reward; And while the Lamp holds out to burn, The vilest Sinner may return. [2 Life is the Hour that God has giv'n To 'scape from Hell, and fly to Heav'n; The Day of Grace, and Mortals may Secure the Blessings of the Day.] 3 The Living know that they must die, But all the Dead forgotten lie; Their Mem'ry and their Sense is gone, Alike unknowing and unknown. [4 Their Hatred and their Love is lost, Their Envy buried in the Dust; They have no Share in all that's done Beneath the Circuit of the Sun.] 5 Then what my Thoughts design to do, My Hands with all your Might pursue, Since no Device, nor Work is found, Nor Faith, nor Hope, beneath the Ground. 6 There are no Acts of Pardon past In the cold Grave, to which we haste; But Darkness, Death, and long Despair, Reign in eternal Silence there. Ye Sons of Adam, vain and young

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #I.LXXXIX (1766) Topics: Delay of Conversion Lyrics: 1 Ye Sons of Adam, vain and young, Indulge your Eyes, indulge your Tongue, Taste the Delights your Souls desire, And give a Loose to all your Fire; 2 Pursue the Pleasures you design, And cheer your Hearts with Songs and Wine; Enjoy the Day of Mirth, but know, There is a Day of Judgment too. 3 God from on high beholds your Thoughts, His Book records your secret Faults; The Works of Darkness, you have done, Must all appear before the Sun. 4 The Vengeance to your Follies due, Should strike your Hearts with Terror through: How will you stand before his Face, Or answer for his injur'd Grace? 4 Almighty God, turn off their Eyes From these alluring Vanities; And let the Thunder of thy Word Awake their Souls to fear the Lord. Lo the young Tribes of Adam rise

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #I.XC (1766) Topics: Delay of Conversion Lyrics: 1 Lo, the young tribes of Adam rise, And through all Nature rove, Fulfil the Wishes of their Eyes, And taste the Joys they love. 2 They give a Loose to wild Desires; But let the Sinners know The strict Account that God requires Of all the Works they do. 3 The Judge prepares his Throne on high, The frighted Earth and Seas Avoid the fury of his Eye, And flee before his Face. 4 How shall I bear that dreadful Day, And stand the fiery Test? I give all mortal Joys away, To be for ever blest. Scripture: Ecclesiastes 11:9 Languages: English

Now, in the Heat of youthful Blood

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #I.XCI (1766) Topics: Delay of Conversion Lyrics: 1 Now, in the Heat of youthful Blood, Remember your Creator God; Behold the Months come hast'ning on, When you shall say, My Joys are gone. 2 Behold, the aged Sinner goes, Laden with Guilt and heavy Woes, Down to the Regions of the Dead, With endless Curses on his Head. 3 The Dust returns to Dust again; The Soul, in Agonies of Pain, Ascends to God, not there to dwell, But hears her Doom, and sinks to Hell. 4 Eternal King, I fear thy Name, Teach me to know how frail I am; And when my Soul must hence remove, Give me a Mansion in thy Love.
